Does anybody else see concern over the bike course and the fact that Hwy 1 is two lane for a good ways of the bike course?  Isn't it the busy time of tourist season in Key West in January therefore you would think there's going to be a good bit of traffic traveling along the bike route.  Two lanes, heavily traveled with bikes seems like it sets up for some tricky conditions?

Have you contacted the race directly to see how they plan to manage these concerns of yours? They've been very responsive to mine.

No, I'm still on the fence about signing up (actually still trying to convince the wife to take a vacation in January to the Keys - you wouldn't think it would be that hard huh!!!).

I would ask the RD to be certain...

BUUUUT looking at Google maps to mile 10 US 1 is four lanes, a lot of US1 looks to have about 8ft of extra pavement to the right of the white lane line, and there is also the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail that parallels US1. My guess is we will be using all of the above at some point.

Not to mention there will only be 500 full and 500 half participants on the course. I am getting the feeling that the race will not sell out either considering 20 weeks to go and only 190ish half and 125 full entrants. So I think the course and riders will be pretty spread out unlike when I did Augusta with 3000 people. Passing was insane!!!

I saw that too, but haven't been there to know for sure. Looks like there is a bike path along hwy 1 in a lot of places too. Be nicer to have the road, but there is that.

Also wondering if there will actually be 500 in each. Even if there is, the timing is spaced to help out with that, so at least we won't be jamming up each other. The Half starts 1 hr after the full, so about everyone (if not everyone) from the full should be past the swim start point for the half. Some fast half folks could potentially catch a few there, and then also on the bike, but the large majority should be up on the Torch Rd lapping while the Half come up and make their turn to head right back. And I only see the absolute fastest Full guys even possibly catching the back most of the half on the way back in. The run shouldn't be an issue just because the way runs go.

I still favor more 3d courses as opposed to the 2d (or 1d) that this one is, but WOW!

DON'T PANIC

[note the large, friendly letters]

The bridge is actually just north of our bike route. The bridge in the photos is US1 it's just this part is west of Marathon and very close to Pigeon Key [the little island in the photo].

My bad for picking photos that had good ambience.

Man, that looks like it will be inviting in Jan. The overseas hwy looks like it will be windy as hell, but still inviting... Can't be worse than B2B last year. I'm in. (although I don't like the fact that so far there are only ~7 people in M25-29. My chances of being dead last are fairly high right now!)

I got a new treadmill that has the Ifit live (love it) and built the first 10 miles of the run course on  a map. Ran about 7 miles of it last night and I am here to break the news, we have a .5% grade that gets as steep as 1.5% for about 10 seconds going over an overpass at about 4 miles. Just an FYI start the hill repeats now Wink

Also, the map I built has street view and many of the streets are narrow. Add in spectators and fans of athletes plus tourists and a handful of locals out having a good time and this run course and finish should be spectaculor.  Cross the finish line, hand me a cold beverage and let the party begin! Cool

I'm thinking about going to the Colorado Altitude Training to prep for the climbs.

How do you manage the triple on the run? Is this some sort of new-age cane? Wink

I should, however, consider the 56t big ring for the descents.

Oh, uh..I just figured the bridge was something we'd see on the bike...You mean we might have to run over something like that, too?

I'm out.

From what Shermbelle said, yes. How well would running in the elevator work? That seems pretty steep.

Travel questions again:

For those flying, are you flying right into Key West (EYW) or somewhere like Miami or Ft Lauderdale and making the drive down. Also anyone using Raceday Transport?

I can't find any logistics that make sense without spending full days traveling to this. The closest drop point for Raceday is in northern Chicago which with traffic and weather that time of year is probably 4hrs each way.

I still don't see pricing for Region 3A anyway. Was supposed to be up there by now. Going to have to check with them again.

We looked at flying into Key West vs Miami and it would cost us twice as much to fly into Key West. In the end we decided to just drive 13 hours and save the money since total travel time flying into Miami then driving to Key West would take about 12 hours. That doesnt include the 5 hour round trip drive to Atlanta to drop off my bike if i used the bike transport. I hate driving that far but we are going to save a ton of money by not paying for airfare and car rental. By driving I don't have to worry about my bike getting list or damaged.
