just signed up. this will be 3rd IM LOU(3rd in a row). Hoping momentum carries over into this year. 12:51 in 2011, 11:17 2012 and hopin to break 10:30 this year. Hired a coach last year and that made the biggest difference. Encourage yall to stay consistent, enjoy the journey (as well as the race) and don't skip on your sleep. You will want it once the summer months come haha.

pfd104 - 2013-01-28 12:46 PM My IM LOU 2013 Fink plan starts today. With a rest day Smile

I'm following the same plan. I've made some adjustments to the schedule since I started 3 weeks ago (doubling up on some weeks along the way), and to account for the Racine HIM not falling in line with the program schedule.

I'm liking it thus far, and have been pretty successful in getting up early, and completing the workout before heading to the office. This is the first time I've trained by following my HR, and I've noticed quite a difference in how I feel after a workout. We'll see if that is still true when I reach the 15-20 hour weeks.

I also start the Fink plan this week! This will be my first IM and I am so excited! This is my first time using HR zones for training, and I haven't done any testing yet so at the moment I'm just using the age-based calculation. Hopefully I'll get a 5K done before the second 10 week section to make sure I'm using the right range.

I haven't read through all of the recent (2013) posts in this forum thread, but saw some comments about Louisville not being the place to PR. Obviously, as my first IM it will be my PR, but I'm curious as to what it is about this race that makes it more difficult? Is it just the heat (I say "just" because I live in Central Florida so heat is normal), or is it the rolling hills on the bike or something else? I have an ambitious goal for myself and am wondering if maybe it's a little too ambitious (not that I'll change the goal or anything!).

Thanks!

Heat + humidity + hills + non wetsuit swim

If you're a strong swimmer, can eat hills for breakfast, and are accustomed to heat and humidity it should be a walk in the park

Hello all!

I have done this race 2x (and might jump in this year if things work out) and I am from the area (my parents actually live on the bike course). I would be happy to answer any questions you might have about training or about the race or about logisitics around the race. I'll be there either racing or cheering on my athletes that are competing so come by our tent and say hello at some point.

Good Luck!

I'm following the BeIronFit 30 week competitive program, this will be my first IM. I am really trying to "trust" the plan and stick to the workouts, not do too much. But I have never trained using HR zones before, and I feel like HR zone 2 is easy for both run and bike workouts. It feels strange to never have my heart rate "up" during a workout (especially here in Central Florida where we have few hills).

I have heard that many people think HR zone 2 feels easy, but I guess I am looking for some reassurance here--I feel like I'm not working hard enough! Do any of you throw in some sections of a bike or run at this point that push your pace out of zone 2, or will you wait until the next 10 week session where there are some higher intensity workouts?

I'm in week 5 on the same program (I've augmented the program as I was anxious to get started, I'll be doubling up on some of the peak weeks in the summer).

I'm trusting the program. It seems to ramp up pretty quick, I'm at over an hour every day, which is significant when combined with an 11-hr work day. I'm enjoying adapting to the longer hours without ever feeling utterly exhausted. By week 11 (April) you'll be adding some tempo and interval workouts.

I like disengaging my brain and just "doing as I'm told".  In the past, I've always trained how I think I should, and pushed myself too hard which results in 1) injury, I don't remember the last time I went an entire season without something cropping up, and 2) disappointment when I can't maintain the same pace on a Saturday 18-mile run as I was able to maintain on my Tuesday 6-miler. By allowing my heart to dictate my pace, I don't have to worry about it. Over time the conditioning, the fitness, and the pace, will come.

At least that's my hope. Otherwise Don Fink is going to be getting a harshly worded letter in the mail, as soon as I figure out where the hell people buy stamps any more.

I am working with a coach for the race. He is a big proponent of higher volume lower intensity training especially earlier in the season. Most of my training is done Z2 and yes it should feel easy. It took me a while to get used to going that easy but it has had me getting in higher volumes without and injuries for the past year and half.

I'm on the Iron Fit Competitive Plan, too. I pretty much follow the training plan suggestions exactly, but I follow the general rule of not doing tempo work for more than 10% of my workout time. I might work in some speed miles during a weekday run, or biking hard on the transition bike, but I pretty much stay Z2 in all of my long workouts.

How's everyone's training going so far? I'm excited to be in week 3 of the 30 week plan, and for the first two weeks stuck to each workout! I've never stuck to a plan this solidly before. (I know, there's a long way to go, but I'm happy about it to this point!)

Going pretty well here. I'm on a 36 week plan so into week 9 now.  I'm already feeling fitter than I did 2 years ago when I did IM Lou the 1st time.  I'm not a cold weather rider so the trainer is getting old quick.  Looking forward to longer and warmer days to get more rides outdoors!  Glad to hear it's going well for you.

I can't wait for warmer weather.  I'm scheduled for 1:45 on the trainer tomorrow... yuck.  And it'll prob be another month AT LEAST before I can ride outside...  On the bright side, sitting on the trainer not only trains you physically, it toughens you up mentally!!

Happy training, everyone!!
