NRG42 - 2013-02-13 12:44 PM What does everyone have planned for V-day or in my case Single Awareness Day?  Anyone trying to get some major pizza points or maybe it is for extra toppings??

We are going to the Dancing Bear Lodge in Townsend, TN for dinner and over night stay in a cabin.  I think the menu for Valentine's Day dinner is a five course,  prix fixe.  The cabins all have hot tubs and fireplaces. We shall use both.  I have a bottle of Piper-Heidseick for after-dinner celebrating.  On Friday morning, I shall ride my bike on River Road along the Little River. It is better than giving a Hallmark card.

+1 to the bolded, but it doesn't even remotely bother me so it's almost a misnomer. It's really just another day to me and I've nothing planned except working and training.  It's a Thursday, so I'm planning a swim and a run, though I think I'll be needing to make up a run, so I'll probably do one early after a morning swim and then another one late that night.

I am going to love myself ALL DAY LONG and really let my crotch take a beating!

Last long ride--8-hour IMNZ course simulation trainer ride.

I'd like some assistance please TAN - I don't know what to do.

I just got an email from my mum about my dad and the fact that apparently over the last year or so my dad has been forgetting the names of things - everyday things.  It's gotten worse over the last 6 months but my dad won't go to the doctor, probably because he's afraid of what the doc is going to tell him.  The worst part for me, is that my mum has sent this email with the express condition that we (my brother and I) are NOT respond to it or to her in any way as no one is to know that my dad is going through this.

Any ideas for sneaky ways that I can try and reach out to my mum?

I would give her a call.  It may anger her momentarily, but she obviously wants to talk about it. Dont be sneaky jsut come out and ask/talk to her about it.  Its a scary thing to go through for everyone involved.  2 going on 3 people in my family have/had alzheimers

Thanks - I just tried to call and there was no answer at their place.  Either she really doesn't want to talk about it, or she's really not home.   Hopefully the anger would only be momentary - this is too big to worry about who knows or who doesn't!

{TANGEMELONS PRESS}

I've been there.

Matty and T-Geeze gave you some good thoughts. You already know this and will do it, but when you talk to your Mum make it clear that you are only calling in order to support her and your Dad in any way you can. And while yes, it's scary ... and there are levels of denial for both your parents ... like T-Geeze pointed out to you, you can point out to her that memory loss is a very sucky but NORMAL part of aging. This isn't some horrible weird secret shameful shocking thing. And there are things that can be done--both by supporters and by your father (both in terms of realizing and working with whatever is going on).

I'll hold you guys in my heart and prayers.

Thanks for your insight and kind words Yantilicious - I'm really glad that the people in TAN are much smarter than I am.

Thursday is legs day.  Friends don't let friends skip legs day!!

I think I have a 1.5 hour run scheduled for tomorrow.  Other than that - business as usual.

Thank you so much for this.

I think it's hitting me particularly hard mainly because I've always been a daddy's girl and seen my dad as some sort of immortal being that is unstoppable with some sort of shining armor that protects him from everything.

Thankfully he already writes to me at least every week and most times two to three times a week to fill me in on everything he and my mom are up to, and I write back as often as I get the emails so it's like an ongoing dialogue.

I'm pretty sure that my mum will have to somehow trick my dad into going to a doctor.  He's very old school and won't go see any medical professionals unless he's bleeding profusely and covering it with gauze and duct tape won't make it stop.  I'd like to set up some sort of family meeting to discuss some of the very points that you brought up, but I don't know how to do that without my dad feeling like he's being ganged up on, or that my mum has broken his confidence as she's the only one besides one of his close friends that he's spoken to about it.

So far I've got messages out to my brother and SIL to see what we might be able to do in terms of discussions with my mum & dad, but I'll keep my fingers firmly crossed that this is merely a daughter's rosy coloured glasses coming off and realizing that my dad is human after all.

There are a lot of causes of memory loss that cannot be treated but there are some very treatable things. Tell him that he needs to let a doctor determine what kind of problem he has.  Ignoring and pretending the memory problem is not there is not a valid medical treatment plan.  I know this is true but it will not be easy to get him to go.  Don't expect him to thank you.  You will have to spend some of your daughter capital to get him to go and you will have to thank him.  Best wishes.

Thursday is a light day - only a 4-6 mile run.  Oh yeah, I also have to pack up the bike for the 4am Friday morning ride.  Never like to do that in the morning.

Thank you.  I'm pretty sure they'll wait another month until they're back in Vancouver to see their usual GP, and I know my mum won't put up with the pretending for much longer if she's spilled the beans to my brother and me. If they don't go to the doctor within a week of getting home though, I may have to arrange some sort of kidnapping.  Good thing I know those kind of people.
