*bump*

Eight weeks from right about now, my wife and I should be pulling into Guerneville.

Yup, feels like the stretch run is starting...

Heh, how's the weather up there in Pasadena? It's been raining off and on down here in San Diego. It was extra crappy this morning when I went on my long ride of the week. All was well until I decided to take a detour and go further than originally planned, only to come back and face 20-30 mph headwinds. I was seriously struggling to keep at constant 13 mph ON THE DOWNHILLS. Not to mention I was freaking cold and starting to bonk (didn't have nutrition with me). Then of course it started to pour quite a bit when I was only 10 or so miles from home. Could have been worse though... Ah, the things we do in the name of training.

Hey coming out to the race from Jersey.  First of all after checking out the photos, Im very excited to be doing this bike course...just hope to be not too tempted to get some wine riding through the valley....we don't have too many vineyards in NJ.

So I guess I'm curious as to whether or not there is a pasta dinner or some location that everyone goes to eat dinner.  Coming to the race solo and just looking for things to do the day before.  If anyone could pass along some info it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome, welcome, Bill! You should probably introduce yourself in the Introduce Yourself forum as well ... it's a wonderful community here.

As the race date draws nearer, we'll definitely decide on a place for a BT get-together. Keep hanging out in this race thread and let us know how your training is going!

Welcome, Bill...good job finding your way to this thread! I was actually just thinking during my morning run about opening up a thread in the Iron Distance forum for this race, specifically because of the number of out-of-state entrants who might not think to stop in to the California board.

Did everyone else get an email update today. I think my heart skips when I see something about it in my inbox!

can't believe it's only 50 days away. I am SO. NOT. READY!!!!

Yup...e-mail chock full o' trivial info, I thought. (Yes, I'm going to bring my photo ID. Haven't done a tri yet that didn't ask me to bring it.)

At the risk of jinxing myself into an injury or something...I'm starting to feel ready.

::knocks really hard on wooden computer desk::

I'm on schedule with my swimming and actually ahead of schedule on the bike (which is good, since I suck hugely on the bike). Really just three more critical workouts to hit (2500 yd ocean swim on 6/14, 60 mile ride on 6/15, and 51/14 brick on 6/22) and I'll allow myself to exhale a bit...

Where will you be staying while you're here?  There's a cute Italian place in Guerneville, just on the main road.  I'm sure it will be jam-packed with triathletes on the night before the race.

If you're staying in Santa Rosa, there are lots and lots of pasta options.   Maybe the BTers will all try to gather at one of the centrally located Mary's Pizza Shacks (there's a new, big one on 4th St, downtown).

The day before the race, you'll have to go to packet pickup (at the Windsor High School?) and set up your T2.  You can hang out in the cute little downtown square in Windsor and visit the shops.

Feeling the love....Thanks everybody.  Def will do an intro on the other board.  Well my training is very sporadic and I really just do whatever I feel my body can take on any certain day.  This week I put in bout 90 on the bike, 9000 in the pool, and maybe 20ish running.  I got eagleman coming up this weekend so very stoked for this race.  Did it last year and am trying to break the 5 hour mark this year....fingers crossed, but really it all depends upon the winds that day.

Long term goal this year is Ironman Louisville.  It's going to be my first one, Ironman, and right now I am a little nervous, I need to train a lot more consistently.

Good luck to everyone and will definite update on training and when I find a place to stay Surprised....still need to do that.

Hey all you 70.3 Vinemaners, I'll be marshalling the bike course again this year so if you see a really tall guy, you'll know its ole jeffy boy.  I'll be cheering for each and every one of you.  I love marshalling this course.  I get to stop traffic and everyone appreciates the volunteers what could be better than that?

Last year I marshalled and was totally inspired to do a triathlon.  I've been wanted to do one for over 20 years and this past winter I finally faced my fear and learned to swim.  I just did my first sprint last weekend (vineman showdown at sundown).

So, when you see me out there, throw up a hand.  Side note:  women seem MUCH happier while competing.  I can't tell you how many beautiful smiles I saw.  Guys, stop being so serious and HAVE FUN!

 ps - No headphones!

LOL...guilty as charged! (Glad to know it isn't just me who's out there glaring and scowling through my races.)

Thanks in advance for your generosity in spending your day helping make it a safe race, jeffy! Look forward to seeing you on the course...and congrats on your first tri!

Officially off the wait list and in the race, check cashed and everything.

I missed three weeks of training from a bike crash, will post pics and such in general section, but am back hitting it hard.

Hopefully I am ready, missing three weeks this late in the cycle kinda bugs me.

Mixie, great job.... Jeff, I'll look for a tall guy and say hi as I ride by..  Zeke, as long as you can do at least 50 miles, you're fine...  At this point, tread softly and do not push too hard this next couple of weeks..  Then remember to start your taper soon...  Pushing hard in training 3-4 weeks out from this race now you won't improve, just chance an injury or over-train...

Just about 5 weeks to go now!

Wow, I just found this thread!  I don't lurk much in the California threads since I'm from Arizona.  I signed up for this race in December before I knew I would have to have two surgeries (one in January and one in March).   Knowing I wouldn't have much time to start training, I hired a coach to get me to the finish line.  It seems really daunting right now to think about the 1/2 IM distance, but hey, when you're out there doing this in beautiful surroundings, it has to take some of the pain away   There are two of us from my tri club in Tucson for this race.  We'll be easy to spot with our Tucson Tri Girls purple  club gear.  Look forward to meeting you all.  Hope you training is going well.

I'm getting excited myself, and I'm not even racing!  Volunteering is a blast.

At the bottom of chalk hill last year we had a volunteer about 1/4 up the road to warn the cyclists of a hard left-hander coming up.  At the T intersection, there was another volunteer, cones and a CHP cruiser.  I was also at the intersection to stop traffic from entering the intersection if there were any riders coming down the hill.  Everything was going great, a few people dropped their chains after making the turn (because there is a little up-hill grade).  One guy actually made a right hand turn while the volunteer was screaming at him and waving the other way.  He had the nerve to let the profanity fly at all of us after he turned around.  3 volunteers, 1 CHP and cones.  We had that intersection COVERED and he still screwed up.

One property owner pulled up to me and said her yard is littered with debris every year and asked me what I was going to do about it.  I said I would notify the race director of her complaint and I did and new procedures were put in place for volunteers to clean up their area.  In fact, I was picking up cans and bottles and trash that had been there for years (non race-related junk).  All of those vineman races are well-run events.  You are in good hands when you enter a vineman race.

I did too - I was out there on Saturday! There seemed to be a lot of people doing at least part of it (tons of cars with bike racks parked at Windsor High) and many looked like they were going out to do the full run course right afterwards - yikes!

5 more weeks - woohoo!

AZchica, if you can swim at least 40 mins, bike 50 miles and run 10 miles, you CAN do this race...  It's all about pacing..  The swim is wonderful..  The bike is an "E" ticket, and the out and back run is fun.. If it's warm, you can still do a run/walk for the 13.1 miles..  My goal for this race last year, my first HIM, was to finish under 8:30 and I did...    Of course, as long as you are not in pain or risking a permanent injury, you should be good.  Up to you and your coach..

I will be in my Denver Broncos outfit, OC Tri Club orange and blue..  I also have tatts on both legs..  I'll look for purple outfits and will say hi if I can find ya!

Good luck...  "Crying?! Are you crying? There's no crying in Triathlon!?"

Just a little over 4 weeks left!

A few questions for those who have done Vineman:

Is there any reason to get to the race site early if I'm in one of the later waves (i.e. 1 hour after the pros go off)? Like, I'm not worried about getting a prime position on the bike racks; just a bit worried that If I get there a little bit later, there won't be any room left on any of the racks for my wave. I normally don't have a problem with arriving early, but I'll be with family this time around.

Along those lines, anyone have experience with what the traffic is like getting to the race site from Santa Rosa on race morning? How about parking?

Any of you who wore wetsuits last year had problems with overheating during the swim? I've heard that this could be cause for concern.
