Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: saph's slightly laid back january yoga 'challenge' Rowdy - 2008-01-03 4:45 PM I am using the Flexible Warrior 1.0 dvd and I like the power sequence out of the three on the dvd. I think I get a better stretch out of it and it really makes me work hard. Two days in a row so far. If I can manage four days a week I will be happy. You find the power sequences is good stretch? Do you do it after workouts? Before or just depends? What is your thought about the other two? I do the Flexibility sequence probably 3-4 times a week always after runs and other times when my legs feel tired/sore. I know it now and actually fast forward through some of her explaining.

I always do the power sequence after a workout. I just feel as if I get a better stretch from it. I do like the flexibility sequence very much and try to do that one once a week. I have never done the first sequence so I can't offer an opinion about it. I am going to give it a try in the next couple weeks. Edited by Rowdy 2008-01-04 5:46 PM |

Master 1249 Atlanta, GA | Subject: RE: saph's slightly laid back january yoga 'challenge' Got my 30:00 of yoga in 2x (my goal) last week! It should be easier since we have a full week and no holidays this week!! I'm really enjoying the Yoga for Triathletes DVD! I just can't find the time to get to a real class...so the DVD is working well...except our 70lb Lab thinks 'floor time' means play time! |

Extreme Veteran 498 Montana | Subject: RE: saph's slightly laid back january yoga 'challenge' that is so funny about your lab....after my trainer ride yesterday I tried to do situps and pushups on the floor and both dogs went nuts. So much for that On another note...my PT (who I dearly love) told me that I really needed to be concentrating on "strength" for rehab...not just "stretching in yoga" AAAAAAAGGGHHHHH! Why do people think yoga is just stretching? |

Pro 3932 Irvine, California | Subject: RE: saph's slightly laid back january yoga 'challenge' I just ordered Kimberly Fowler's Yoga For Athletes DVD, but they said it would take 5-7 days to process. (And I'm really jealous of those of you who can go right to her studio!) So I also ordered 2 DVD's from Amazon that have really high customer ratings -- "Kundalini Yoga For Beginners And Beyond", and "Kundalini Yoga - A Journey Through The Chakras", both by Ana Brett and Ravi Singh. I'll report back with my impressions on them once I've tried them out a little. |

LOL My dog (luckily, only a 25lb beagle) thinks the same thing! He almost always sticks his nose in my face when I'm doing downward dog. I think he can't figure out why I'm doing HIS pose. I've really been slacking on the yoga so far - only 50 mins of my 8-hour month goal! |

Master 2629 brummie land | Subject: RE: saph's slightly laid back january yoga 'challenge' did a full 40 minutes today of my leah dvd. was fun too hungover to manage anything else. btw for spiritfire and those doing more 'spiritual' yoga - why do you do this version? what attracted you? as an ex-evangelical christian i am reasonably anti religion/spirituality and still have a very western mindset so find the more eastern practices a bit off putting. BUT would love to learn more and learn to appreciate why certain versions of yoga are practiced.
thanks |

Pro 3932 Irvine, California | Subject: RE: saph's slightly laid back january yoga 'challenge' I watched some of the Kundalini Yoga DVD I just bought, and followed along as best I could. The first set was fairly simple and fun. They had cutesy names for the exercises: one they called the "washing machine", another the "propeller". All worked the spine in various ways, and emphasized a flow of movement with your breath, rather than maintaining certain poses. I also peeked ahead at some future sets, though I didn't attempt them. One was a motion from being seated (with legs forward and flat), up to bridge, then back again. Another was a fluid motion from down-dog to plank to up-dog, then back to plank and down-dog, repeating as many times as you could. It's too early for me to give my impressions about it -- I need to try more of it -- but it looks promising. So how is everyone else faring? Edited by krludwig 2008-01-15 2:20 AM |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: saph's slightly laid back january yoga 'challenge' I've been doing Yoga most days mostly at home. I do miss my class and the peace I get from that, but I need to work on what helps me. Today is my power yoga day but I'm getting a free massage from a friend in training that conflicts with the class so I'll do some at home again today. I did get a new Yoga book yesterday....Yoga for Athletes...on first glance looks good and has a short DVD with warm up and cool down. Great photos along with instructions and modifications. Much of the things in the Spinnerval Flexible Warrior is in the book which I haven't seen in other Yoga books. At the end of the book it has problem areas and suggested Yoga work to do to help with those issues..which I think will be super helpful.

thanks Well for me it's a bit of a long story about how I came to it ... I've done yoga sporadically for about 5-6 years, and never thought of it as more than just a stretching class. This past summer I went on a surf/yoga retreat, and had an amazing experience ... I really connected with the teacher, and during our yoga practices I really felt the mind/body connection ... I went into the gap, so to speak ... it changed my life. I have never felt more in tune with my body, never felt so relaxed and serene yet energetic at the same time. It was incredible. Upon my return from the retreat I actively sought out new teachers and types of yoga, have studied the philosophies of yoga, and have continued to experience the mind/body/spirit connection that yoga is meant to teach us. For me ... it's not a religious experience - I am not a religious person. However I've become deeply meditative (I usually meditate on nature) as the benefits in all aspects of my life are exceptional - how I deal with stress, how I sleep, how I interact with others, how I train, my eating habits, etc ... I can tell when I don't practice and meditate enough - I let the stress of my life really get to me. When I'm consistently practicing - nothing really gets to me, I'm pretty much happy all the time. For anyone wanting to know a bit more about the philosophies of yoga - I really recommend The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga by Deepak Chopra. Very good book, nicely translated, easy to read, yet full of incredible information. |
