Haha...too funny.

Speaking of tandems, have any of you ever been on one? They kind of freak me out! I was riding in a hilly area a few weeks ago and this tandem went flying past me on a downhill, then we approach the next uphill, which was fairly steep. It was one of those hills that if you aren't geared properly, you're gonna have a very difficult time keeping moving forward. Anyway, both riders were really turning the cranks and I thought for sure they'd tip (the didn't, although I can't vouch for what happened after I passed them). But then I got to thinking that if I was on one of those and the other rider just let up for a second, we'd both go down. And, unclipping and stopping must be hard too. I would have to have A LOT of trust in someone to ride one of those. Or, maybe it's easier than it looks.

I don't think you'd want to clip-in for that very reason.

I once tried to do the tandem kayak thing in a creek that had a pretty strong current.  As we were unloading it, some dude said "a tandem huh? So you want to test the marriage..."

Needless to say, I got worn-out that day while Jenny sat-back and enjoyed the view.

I think I remember seeing a blind guy who did IM Kona last year who rode on a tandem.  I'll bet he clipped-in.

Alright, Question about HRMs and HRs.

I finally started using the HRM.  I wasn't using it before because it's so darn uncomfortable and it wasn't getting a good signal for some reason.  But what I did was I slid it off to the left side around the heart basically and it feels pretty good now.

Today's run was supposed to be a zone 1 or 2 run.  But it turns out I averaged zone 5.  I don't even know if I can average zone 1 or 2 with the heat out there.  I may be walking in zone 1 or 2.  How strict are those parameters?

I guess I probably should go back and look at Lauren's earlier posts about HR zones... I remember her giving some good gouge a while ago.

Hey all.  These crazy weeks seem to be adding up.  My wife was in Chicago for three days so I had the kiddos all to myself.  Didn't get a chance to workout on Mon or Tues, although watching the kids all day on Sun and Mon was quite a workout.  Looks like SO is going to be working late during the week and some weekends through October because of her big Vegas project.  I am hoping by the time I start my HIM training at the end of the year my schedule frees up a bit.  I will worry about it then.

Good luck to all racing this week.  I can't believe I am already doing my second race.  Seems like yesterday I just started training.  Race is on Cape Cod, so we are making a mini vacation out of it and leaving tomorrow.  Have a good weekend.

Let's talk about this tomorrow or over the next few days.  You need to establish your HR zones a little better I think.  You should NOT be able to hold in Z5 for more than 20 minutes or so (or for a 5k race.)  That is above your LT and hard to sustain for a workout unless you are doing interval training at a good pace.  For example, I was running 6:30 pace for quarter mile intervals today in 105 temps.  I was only in Z5 for 1 min or so in the entire workout, and I felt like I was pushing.....

HR training and HRM's are the way to go IMO so "good on ya" for getting into that, but you need to get your base/zones established or it's no good.

The heat WILL impact your HR, as your capilaries start to dialate due to the heat so your heart has to work harder AND I heard you can lose some blood volume as you dehydrate.  But it should only be about 10 bpm at most, I'm guessing.

GomesBolt, how did you establish your HR zones? And, yes, like Aikidoman said, you can only maintain Zone 5 for several minutes at best, so there's no way you avg'd zone 5. Your HR will be higher in the heat, if you're slightly dehydrated, etc. Also, sometimes, HRMs just don't read accurately.

I knew there's something screwy about that.  The HR Zones were just based on the run I did on Tuesday.  The Garmin automatically adjusted.  I guess I can try to do the custom setup on it.  I averaged 170bpm.  I kept taking a few walk-breaks every 6-8 minutes to get my HR from up in the 180s to 159.  Once it got there, I started running again.  We'll see if that's the case again when I run tomorrow and Sunday.  I may do a treadmill run on Sunday.

Yeah, you can't use Tuesday's run to establish the HR zones. It looks like you did a tempo run, so using a HR reading you got during that run would really have things messed up. Chances are, you avg'd tempo for yesterday's run too.

Zone 1 - Recovery
Zone 2 - Endurance
Zone 3 - Tempo
Zone 4 - LT
Zone 5 - VO2max

Having a Garmin, I know it sets the zones based on max HR.  I didn't know it could adjust though.  It must realize that you exceeded your max HR and resets it to the new number....

HOWEVER, zones based on max HR are a bunch of hooey, unfortunatly.  Maybe ok for "joe average weekend worrior", but not for finely tuned triathletes such as ourselves!

The most commonly excepted method is the LT method.  You will need to do a specific field test - the protocol is on BT or 3Dmultisport.  I can give you the link if you are interested.  THEN you put your field test results in the calculator provided on BT or 3D.  It will find your zones for you.  Then you have to put in custom zones in your Garmin.

Again, congrats for going to the next "level" of performance training!

If the garmin sets zones based on max HR, I would imagine it would at least want you to do a hard effort (like Jim, I'm not a proponent of the max HR effort). It sounds like it only would have used the max HR reached during your tempo run on Tues. In which case, the highest HR would have hit during that run would have probably been somewhere in zone 4, nowhere close to true max...

Hi guys, embarrassing bike question here, does the quick release valve always go on the same side on the front wheel as it does for the rear wheel? Also, is the arrow on the front tire supposed to roll forward such that the arrow head touches ground first? I am confused because I have never yet changed the front tire on this bike since I bought it and the arrow looks backwards to me right now (I just assumed they would have had it set up properly).

yes, the arrow is supposed to move forward.  If it's a front tire, I think you could just flip it unless you have a computer magnet on it (but you can switch that too.) instead of taking off the tire.

I'm not sure what you mean by quick release valve.  If it's the skewer, just take it completly out and turn it around.  It doesn't matter what side it's on, but I like it on the left to match the rear (just an OCD thing)

Thanks, so it does not matter which way the front wheel itself is on the bike, only that the tire arrow is in the right direction and that the skewer is such that the release valve is on the side without the cassette (same as rear)? Is that correct?

I feel like the Geico Caveman "Yeah I have a response...Uh, What?"

Is the release valve the lever that you flatten to tighten the bolt so the wheel is secured to the fork?

A question for Lauren.  I really want to do an Ocean 5K in January (it's in Ft Lauderdale, no wetsuit required).  How many meters should I be swimming leading-up to that? I'm already doing 2 miles twice a week.  Should I add a third swim of 3 miles?  How much should I do in the ocean?  I ask since you're doing the Chesapeake.  Do you replenish nurtition during that at all?

By the way, I'm talking about when I hit November/December, not ramping-up mileage now.  Focus for now is the Marathon training.

Correct. But, if your cyclocomputer sensor is on the front wheel, the spoke that it is on will have to be facing the side that the little reader is on .

I never understood the rotational tire thing. Like what will happen if you ride it the wrong way?

Hey Gomes,

I am actually not doing the Chesapeake Bay Swim, it's just something that is on my long-term list of races I would like to do.

I would definitely say you should do a few swims in the 5,000 yd/meter range. And, get in the ocean as much as possible...unless it's going to take away your chances of doing longer swims.

You'll probably be okay without taking in nutrition during that race. If you're allowed to have a support crew, then maybe some water, gatorade and/or a gel or two. If not, you'll just have to do it without nutrition. It's like 800 meters longer than an IM swim, and you don't have to worry about a bike and run afterwards, so no nutrition should be just fine .

Thanks! Well my guess is that nothing will happen if you ride it the wrong way because I've been riding it the wrong way since March when I bought the bike! Don't know why they didn't have it set up correctly for me in the first place!

Yeah, it's easy with the rear tire, because you know when changing it, the writing of the tire goes on the cassette side. With the front, sometimes it's harder to remember which way to put the tire on.

Hi guys! Well, the 10K was actually 6.1 miles.  I finished in 51:00.  It wasn't a PR but I didn't expect one since this was a really, really hilly race!  I did better than I expected, though!   Cheers!
