carrie639 - 2010-08-09 8:40 PM Sorry guys but I skipped my race yesterday.  Pushed it a little to hard swimming with paddles on Friday and was still sore yesterday.  Couldn't afford another injury, so played it safe.  Last time I pushed it, I had to take a month off.

Great job Scotty!!!

Neal how is the groin?

So I am beyond frustrated with the groin right now.  The doctor's visit today was interesting to say the least.  X-rays were negative which is a good thing.  Doc seemed to think it could be impingement that is causing the pain and wants me to see an orthopedist.  Bad news is I can't get in to the ortho until September which is far too late for diagnosis.  I'm heading back to the PT later this week to see what her opinion is.  Right now I am wondering how much fitness I would lose due to 6 weeks of inactivity - lol

Hey, sorry to hear your groin pain is not easing up.  Have you tried ice, heat, massage, rolling?

I would call around to see if you can get into another ortho and I would even go so far as to plead your case with the staff to get in.  Let them know you are 6 weeks out from an Ironman race . . . play the wounded soldier, people can make the time and get you in the schedule if they want to.  Hell it is something for doctors to boast about getting someone back on their path to Ironman victory.

Hell if you have the money and are desperate, go to emergency, they usually have an ortho on staff

Get away from that shy self of yours and beg if you have to . . . you have worked way too hard and way too long to not do everything to get back on track.

Sorry to be so bold, but I would HATE to see your dreams dashed and your hard work thrown away when you are so close . . .

Good luck, hope it goes well

carrie639 - 2010-08-09 5:40 PM Hills of consequence?  Are there any in Illinois?  Do Barrington Hills count?  No clue . . .

OK, but if I only plan on doing the loop (only 40 miles) I should be OK then.  I am not great at hills, I might even say I suck, but I need the work.  Just use the easy chain ring right.

I am getting better at bike handling, not the best, but getting better.  I do hate turns after hills (little switchbacks - ugh)

Any info you have can help. Wish I could plug into the computrainer right at the loop and get a feel for it, unfortunately I don't think you can do that.

Can I park in or near Verona after the swim and go from there?  Are the roads clearly marked that I can follow never having done the course?

You can park at Fireman's Park in Verona (http://www.ci.verona.wi.us/index.asp?Type=B_BASIC&SEC=%7B7E305E34-6ADF-4CB6-B98F-9CB0BF0256F7%7D).  The route goes right by it and most people just doing the loop park there.  Many tri clubs have marked the route with arrows.  Not sure if they are all still there.

Here are the directions:

  • Right on Bruce Street coming out of Fireman's Park parking lot
  • Left Paoli Street (Route 69)
  • Right Valley Road
  • Right Sugar River Road  (short, steep hill after the turn)
  • Left Marsh View Road
  • Left County Route-G
  • Right Route 92  (long, gradual hill into Mt Horeb)
  • Right 8th Street
  • Right County Route-S
  • Left Witte Road (had some loose gravel from chip sealing but may be OK by then)
  • Right County Route-J
  • Left Garfoot Road
  • Left Mineral Point Road
  • Right Garfoot Road (be careful of the sharp turn to the right at the bottom of the hill, slow down)
  • Right County Route-KP (nice, new pavement)
  • Right Bourbon Road
  • Right County Route-P
  • Left Stagecoach Road (very rough road)
  • Right North Birch Trail
  • North Birch Trail turns Left and becomes Old Sauk Pass Road  (long hill, steeper toward the top)
  • Old Sauk Pass Road turns Right and becomes Timber Lane (be careful of the sharp left turn at the bottom of Timber
  • Left Midtown Road (sharp left turn going immediately uphill)
  • Right Shady Oak Lane (keep your speed on the turn that goes over the bridge, looks tighter than it is
  • Left County Route-PD
  • Right North Nine Mound
  • Left Cross Country Road
  • Right County Route-M (Main St, Route 69)
  • Left on Verona Ave (Business 18/151)
  • Right on Old Hwy PB
  • Right on Whalen
  • Right County Route-M
  • Left Locust Drive
  • Right Bruce Street (back to Fireman's Park on your right)

You will be fine.  Go out and have fun!

Thats rough when you can't treated or see a doctor becasue they are all booked up. Hopefully it is nothing to major and you are able to heal in time for your ironman!!

fungi32 - 2010-08-10 7:02 AM Century ride went pretty well, probably a little more of a jump in distance than I needed to do but all went well. About 15 miles left the course had a climb that sort of sucked the life out of me but other than that and a sore butt pretty fun day, took it pretty easy, me and a friend rode it and every time we would stop we would see a group go by and never could seem to catch up, missed the train all day and pretty much switched off pulling between the 2 of us.

Congrats on the finish!!! Gotta love those nice hill climbs at the end of a long ride!

disturbed275 - 2010-08-06 6:47 AM So what's everyone up to this weekend?  Any racers?

My plan is to sleep.  A lot.  And hopefully get back to some normal training

I contemplated a race in NY near my family.....good thing I didn't sign up.  Calf won't let me run yet   Car broke down on the way to NY and we are in PA.  Making the est of it!  Used to live here and have lots of friends tocatch up with

So hows the calf doing? How about the car? Hopefully the car was too expensive and the calf heals up!!

When I have had problems getting into a specialist I ask to be put on a list for any calcellations.  Seriously, I did that when I needed to see a neurosurgeon for a blown disc in my back 10+ years ago.  They couldn't get me in till the end of the month.  I asked for that cancellation list and they had me in to see the Dr within days.  She called be back to get me in within 15 minutes of my original phone call.
He saw me on a Friday and had me on the OR schedule for the folowing Monday.

Seems wierd for you to be down so long with an injury, Neal!  Hope that you recover quickly!

I am going to try another test run tomorrow.  Hoping that my calf has recouperated enough to run again.  Per the Cyber PT orders 1 mile maximum on a level sruface.

I am doing a 50 mile organized tomorrow ride to get my miles in.  It has been soooooo hot, I have been very lazy about getting outside to ride and indoor rides are depressing during the summer.

Unofortunately, after that I am traveling Mon-Thurs the next couple of weeks . . .

Hope the calf is feeling better for you.

It's been weird seeing all the yellow squares on my calendar.  Even last winter with the hip injury I was swimming pretty much every day.  With the flooding in Ames, I'm not sure when the local pools will reopen so I can't even do that right now.  I do have the green light to do some riding this weekend to see how that goes.

Oy, so sad to see all the problems plaguing everyone recently!

Judi - sorry to hear the calf's continuing to give you problems.   Hopefully the steriod shots will help.
Neal - That's good you have the go-ahead to start riding again!  How frustrating about all the groin issues and flooding, though Frown  When it rains, it pours, huh?  (Literally!)

I actually had a little run-in with a cab while riding my bike to work the other day.  Luckily all I came away with was a little road rash, a bruised leg, and a few days of limping.  I was fine by Saturday when I had to do my long run...  Besides people asking me what happened to my leg, of course.

Can't see orthopedics until 8/24.  Not racing this weekend, self imposed limitation to swim only until seen by ortho.

    Hope everyone is healing up.

My training has been going well and I think I've got nutrition figured out somewhat, so that's good.  My only issue has been the horrible heat.  It just takes everything out of me.  I'm ready for cooler weather.   (Remind me this winter when I'm complaining of 60 degrees being cold that I said that.

So, I just registered for the 2.5k non-wetsuit division of a 2.5k/5k OWS race in September... I was originally thinking of doing the 5k, but then decided I'd rather work on getting faster instead of going longer.  Plus, the field is mostly purist swimmers (ie, people in speedos, not tri suits) so the paces are generally faster than you would see at tris.  It's a little intimidating, but hopefully I can build a little more speed for the 2.5k distance!!

Thanks!!  Yeah, I'm feeling mostly as good as new.  Just a little tightness in my lower leg whenever I do certain yoga poses, but it doesn't seem to be hindering any of my swims/bikes/runs!

I just did a little google search on the calf rocker that Lori mentioned to me.  It led me to an article on torn caf muscles.  If it's even partially torn they say no running 4-12 weeks.  I'm going on my third week and still not feeling good so I'm not overly optimistic here.

Add me to the injured corp...

Just got home from two days on the road.  I took my running gear--but didn't run.  I was still feeling occasional twinges in my right shin...when at rest even.  I actually woke up several times Tuesday night with a slight ache in my right shin bone.  I've had muscle soreness awaken me from a sound sleep before, but this didn't feel like muscle soreness.  It's probably me just being a hypochondriac, but I'm still not entirely convinced that I don't have stress fracture.

Going to see if I can squeeze a doctor's appointment in next week.  It'll be tough as I'm on the road again next week for a couple of days too.  If I heal between now and the appointment, great, and I can always cancel it.  Like Judi though, I'm not overly optimistic at this point.  Somethin' just ain't right...

Yikes!  The weekend has come and gone and I forgot to ask what everyone was up to.  So, what were you all doing?  Hopefully you had a good couple of days and those of us with injuries are starting to recover.

I was in Madison for a big training day.  I have to say that it went pretty well.  I survived the swim, which was a huge success given the fact that I had only swam twice in the preceding 4 weeks.  I also ran into Carrie beforehand and it was nice to finally meet a Mentee.  I got to ride the course too.  It was definitely as hilly as they say it is.  I rode the first loop and then about 10 miles out on the stick and then back to the start of the loop.  Refueled and then took off on the second loop.  About 10 miles down the road I took a wrong turn and ended up off course a ways.  By the time I made it back on I was already well over 90 miles for the day so I just headed back to the car, finishing at around 105 miles.  Kinda bummed I didn't get the full second loop in, but still a good training day.  My legs felt fantastic yesterday.  Best recovery I've had post-century.

I even managed to sprinkle a little bit of running in with my walk yesterday.  I did a 6:1 walk/run and covered 7.5 miles that way pain free.  All in all the weekend was a huge success.

Last long run and bike this weekend, bike felt great, run hurt. Ride today felt pretty good considering my long run yesterday. Last week of build and 2 weeks of taper and it is on. Hoping it cools down before the 1/2 and starting to get my usual concerns but the training is there hopefully.

Ok I think every should see if a doctor is able to do a group visit with all the injuries we have going on here!! On a serious note I do hope everyone does heal up and get back to 100% !!!

I had an olympic race this weekend in brighton, mi. It is about 30 minutes north of Ann Arbor. This event had about 500 people, 400 did the sprint and 100 did the olympic. I managed to place first in my age group and got a great bottle of wine for the prize!! Here is the race report for more:
