smack - 2011-01-19 5:36 PM Thanks McFuzz for the PM, I am now starting to kick up the training.  Had my first day back in the pool yesterday and could not believe how hard it was to swim.  Really have to focus on the swim in between now and my first tri.

A question for the group: How do you simulate riding hills when you are on trainer.  I have a bike improvement training plan that I intend to start that calls for hill riding.  However, due to weather and lack of skill I am primarily going to ride on a trainer.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.  Thanks

good to have you back! just keep up with the swimming it will get easier.

As for simulating hills on the trainer.  If it is a lower end trainer like mine, really the only thing you can do is shift to a higher gear. That will make it harder to pedal, similar to going up hill.  If you have a fancy trainer you may have more options.

soccermom15 - 2011-01-19 3:39 PM OK, I know this is off-topic and I apologize for that but I just had to share this.  I just talked to my son on the phone.  He is studying architecture at college and was calling to let me know about his books/classes/etc.  He also asked that we start saving cardboard boxes.  When I asked him why, he said that his architectural history instructor has given them a project for the end of the year where they have to construct a replica of a building (he's had to do several of these so far) and then wear it during class on the last day, like a costume!  I'm picturing all these 20 year-olds wearing cardboard buildings walking around campus, lol!  I'm sure most won't actually wear them out in public, but I'd love to be there that day.  I told him to make sure he takes a picture for me, but he said that ain't happeningSmile.  I'll have to talk to his GF and see what she can do for me.

Are you the one with the son at Bradley in Peoria??  If so I can save boxes if you tell me what kind.  I work in the computer department and have tons of Dell boxes I can bring home.

robingray_260 - 2011-01-19 4:02 PM It sounds like I just have to HTFU on the cold belly while running.  I would think that it would be warmer due to the extra insulation in my mid sectionWink.  I wonder if they make a belly gaitor similar to my neck gaitor (just much larger!) the suggestion on hand warmers.. hmmm...

I wear a thermal vest when I run in cold weather. Seems to help.

Nope, that's me.  an electrical engineering major.  He'd have to dress up in circuits, wires, etc.

Sounds like a cool project though.

Congrats on your 3miler Ree, and yeah, I know all about Bike Butt. The more you ride the less painful it gets... usually.

Strength: Injury free since September. Not killing myself on every workout, taking days off. I feel like I've got more balance in my life, not being obsessive about training like I was my first year of doing Tri. Now I know what moderation feels like and it feels good.

Weakness: Maybe I'm being too moderate and its time to step it up a bit... especially with running and stick to weight training at least once preferably twice a week.

I'll take Dunkin Donuts coffee over Starbucks. Though these days my morning drink is tea, PG Tips! Its super strong black tea. I drink coffee once a week or so and its like doing crack, its amazing, its a GIANT energy and mood boost if your body isn't too used to it.

r3b3cca - 2011-01-18 9:15 PM Great work so far, McFuzzies!

Strength:  Yesterday I took the back tire off my bike and practiced fixing a flat.  I know it sounds silly, but this was a big accomplishment for me.  My training has been going great.  I feel really strong and healthy.

Weakness:  I need to get out on the road more on my bike.  I don't mind running in the rain, but I hate biking in it, which is a problem in Portland in the winter.

And here's my little Starbucks gripe: At my neighborhood Starbucks they don't list the 8oz or 12oz sizes on their menu anymore.  They still have the cups, but you have to ask.

They don't list the 8oz or 12oz here either!  I still ask for a tall or a grande though :/  Weird!

You know I hated biking in the rain too, so I went out and bought nice rain gear in the REI sale and also a fender!  I won't ride on the roads though, just trails. I always feel like I've worked harder when I cycle in the rain.  Pain in the arse though having to dry your bike when you get home. lol

The spin class this morning knocked me for six. Holy crap!  I actually had to lay down this afternoon!  Hoping to go again on Friday however. I think I may have found my mojo, and yet another good day of eating for me.  Feeling pretty good right now.

Great job on your workout!  You are so right about the rain gear.  I definitely need to get some rain clothes and a fender, too.  This sport is so expensive!

It snowed quite a bit up in our mtns yesterday, so I will get in a long xcountry ski today.  I decided to swap out swimming for skiing for the winter season so I can justify getting out there 1 - 2x / week.

Ree - congrats on three miles, what an accomplishment! sorry about the butt, it will get better!

I woke up this morning to at least 6" of snow and it's still coming down.  Schools are all closed so me and DD are home today.  I'm glad I went to the gym last night - there's no way I'm getting out in this mess unless I have to (driving anywaySmile).  I'll get my run in today.  I've got 6-7 miles on the schedule with some intervals in there somewhere.

Enjoy your swim tonight!

Good morning McFuzzies!  You know that saying 'silence is golden'?  Well I am armpit deep in gold right now.  Nothing better than the sound of 24 silent 8th graders writing a semester final essay.  Ahhhhh...it's bliss!

Happy training everyone!  For me...rest day!

Bikers butt is not terminal.  But it feels that way.  I've been told the cause is that a seat that is too soft, tgoo much gel, actually cuts blood flow by collapsing capillaries in the gluts.  Hence the soreness.  If it continues I would consider checking out some new seats.  Many LBS will let you try some before you buy.  Great idea.  Or there are some tried and true.  Trek makes some that are very comfortable, my wife says.  ISM Adamo, though pricey, are getting great marks from Triathletes, both men and women.  And a company named Terry caters to women.

What does it mean when you are asked to "select a size for your bike"?  I am 6' tall.  Everything is in metric, but what are they refering to or looking for?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Road/tri bikes are generally "sized" in centimeters.  The size refers to the length of the seat tube from the bottom bracket (where the pedals/crank spin) to some other point in the general vicinity of the seat tube/post/top-tube.  It could be the top of the seat tube (where the post comes out).  It could be the intersection of the top-tube and seat tube or the seat-tube and seat-stays (the small bars that extend from near the seat towards the rear axle).  It could also be some *theoretical* point the manufacturer chooses (if, for example, the top tube slopes downward, they'll sometimes size to the point where a horizontal top-tube would intersect).

Size and fit are important, so it's best if you can test first.  You may find yourself completely comfortable on a 57cm Trek and absolutely miserable on a 57cm Cannondale even if they're sized the same way.  (Some other geometry is also important to fit.)  You can search for bike fit calculator.  Competitive cyclist does a nice job describing the measurements and then giving you a rough idea what dimensions would be good for you.

Too small, and you'll have the seat all the way up (extra stress on the joints, seatpost, and seat tube) and you'll be hunched over the handlebars.  Your knees will interfere with your torso or elbows and you'll start pointing them out at an angle (very hard on them) instead of keeping them aligned with your feet.

Too large, and you'll be stretching to pedal (which means rocking on the saddle and lots of chafing) and your torso unsupported as you stretch to reach the handlebars.

First step though is to decide what kind of bike you want.  (I posted a bit on page 47).  Road bikes are lighter and more efficient, but may not be comfortable or practical for casual riding.  (I got rid of the 10-speed I rode in HS because I got tired of fixing flats and it wasn't comfortable cruising the neighborhood with the kids).  Mountain bikes are much cheaper, but also much heavier.  You can get smooth tires "baldies" if you plan to ride mostly on pavement.  With thick, heavy-duty, tires, you don't get many flats and the upright riding position is more comfortable for cruising with the family.  Hybrid or Fitness bikes fall in between.
