cbarnes1 - 2012-01-13 8:36 AM So do you not go and watch your kids events because it's boring?

Well Said!

I do NOT consider my self an endurance athlete.  Not by my standards.  But the "normal" population that says I am a nut ball?  Maybe, but in the world of triathlon and the world in which I once was... NO WHERE CLOSE TO AN ENDURANCE ATHLETE.  Doesn't mean I won't try and go long with these people, but I may get my butt kicked.

This is one of those topics that you either feel one way or another... The old agree to disagree type of conversation.

Love ya, but I don't see what this has to do with anything related to taking littke kids to a race that is going to last at a minumim 15 hours by the time you count leaving for the swim and finishing up with a post race massage or trip to the med tent.

Some of you guys are really over the top on this subject and it's the first time a thread has really pissed me off.  Christina got what she needed and she and her husband will make the right decision for them.

Over and out.

I'm the parent - the grown-up.  Part of my job is the priviledge of seeing my kids compete, perform, etc.  Also part of my responsibility is to make sure that they understand that it (life) isn't all about them - I try very hard to do most of my training at times when it doesn't impact them, but that doesn't always work.  This teaches them that the family doesn't revolve around them 100% of the time, and that families support each other.  They have all seen me - and Jeff - race.  I LOVE seeing them out on the course, and it's even more fun if they are racing, too.  It's getting to be less fun as they crush me, but I'm learning to handle that more gracefully!  We DON'T schedule races that conflict with big events for our kids.

For our family, and I agree 100% that it's different for everyone, bringing kids to a long event that involves travel means that they will miss out on something that's important to them.  Every time.  Be it school, a sporting event they are involved in,  a job, an activity with friends.  We insist they come on vacation with us annually, and several weekend trips per year.  But to ask them to do more, because we want to have them watch us race, doesn't seem right.

If they were babies or toddlers without other commitments, traveled well, and would be safe, comfy and supervised while we were racing, that's a different story.

BTW, we have invited them to all 5 IM races - they tracked us from home, but they didn't want to spend the week watching us deal with it all.

I keep checking the Ironman St George Volunteer page.  First it said that they would open on Jan 1. Now it says:

"Volunteer Registration for the 2012 Ironman St. George is coming soon! Please check back for updates"

What do y'all think is a great place to volunteer?

My kids swam and dove competitively for 10+ years.  Trust me, I am a professional at boring events!  Nothing like waiting in a Hot, Humid pool for 8 hours to watch your kid swim for 2 minutes 3 times during the meet.  Laughing

Families and racing is obviously a complex issue. A lot depends on the family schedule which gets worse as the kids get older. Other factors are the location, activities on site, age of the kids, whether anyone else is there to help and your philosophy regarding your endurance life.

These are different for everyone!

I am pretty sure I have never missed one of my daughter or son's activities. Last night was a dance performance by my daughter. (Boy did I get a glimpse of the future seeing her in full make-up!) There were 5 other acts, none of which I was interested in, but I stayed and watched them too. (The woman in front of mewas on her smart phone the whole time!)

Having said that, for ME, it is not necessary for me to have them there. They see me train, they know the committment I have made and I have explained why. They have seen me do shorter local races. If they want to try a race I will be there to help them train.

Having said that, I am trying to figure out the logistics for IMFL. November 3, is well in to next years school year. Linda and John are bringing theirs and I am working on things with my wife. If everyone WANTS to come I will make it work for all of us. If not I amok with that and they can track me on-line if they choose. I think about my family a great deal while I am racing regardless of their presence. We are very open about our love for one another so I do not feel neglected when they are not there.

Actually, it s harder for me when I travel overseas on business to be without them than when I am racing.

I wore my pink pants and turquoise IMFL volunteer shirt for the occasion. And I learned women have mammograms and papa but nothing back there. I told the nurse she was lucky. Then she volunteered to give me a mammogram....screw that!

I have no idea what that means, but think again on what women do and don't get examined.  The back door party is part of the annual exam with your gyn.  And I guarantee us "ladies" started that process a lot earlier than you had to at the almost age of 40!

PS. Thanks for getting us on a whole new topic.  For that I am grateful.

John - Sure it was his finger?  Congrats on no Cx

Suzy - Love ya too.  Our views are different sometimes

Dino - Smell of chlorine and a nice echo for 8 hours.. long days.

Almost back to health and hope to be able to run Monday.  Damn rough start this year.

Oh, my wife and kids will be on the white sandy beach next to the course during CdA enjoying their summer off.  My wife may even have cocktails for you if you want to stop by. Tongue out

Janet Evans: Sooooo inspiring.... much more so than Dara Torres, IMO!! (But then I've always respected the distance athletes more than the sprinters -- what can I say? I'm biased, but happy to admit it.)

It also shows that if you train like you once did (as much as life permits), you might surprise yourself. That said, I'm not willing to put 15+ hours/week into the pool at this point in my life!!
