Master 1792 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group CLOSED New babies and new bike...oh my...blessed we are! Hope everyone is well. Did a 5k with my kiddo Saturday. He had a blast. I did too. Sunday was foggy and rainy and only about 50 degrees. We stayed in our jammies all day and it was fabulous. Hubbs is out of town, so probably won't get any workouts in. On a good note, he is picking up my new mtb while he's gone. I don't remember asking for one, but he assures me that's why he bought it. LOL. Men. |

Master 7712 Orlando | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group CLOSED Thanks for all the admires for my new ride. I took it out for a spin around the neighborhood - what a revelation! I thought my road bike was light and smooth, but compared to the P2 it's a dump truck. Now I just need to get used to being in the aero position for long periods of time and practice my bike handling skills. Anybody have any tips for making a smooth transition from road to tri bike?

Ann-Marie I don't know about "smooth" but I can offer you what I did and advice given to me. First, I would just go ride on a flat road without many cars and practice going aero from time to time. Also, on longer "real" rides, I'd just ride upright to get the feel of the bike. I did that for quite some time. Then, when I felt like it, I'd try aero for a while and gradually I was able to spend more and more time there. You'll find that your neck gets tight and sore and my shoulderbladd seems to bother as well. Also, I put it on the trainer and practiced just getting into the aero position there. You've been fitted on it, right? It took a couple or three fittings for me to get adjusted on mine, btw. Let us know how it's going. So exciting!! |

The weird thing is, I am also more motivated in the other busy facets of my life--school and work. I am going to be crazy busy trying to keep up with my classes, and remodeling a huge exhibit (among other things) at work, but I will still keep up with my training--and I have a feeling the training will keep me inspired to do well in my other ambitions.--At least I hope so! |

This wasn't really in my budget either, but with the share the ride deal, it would have been fiscally irresponsible to say no I lost my tri-bike virginity last night when i took her for a quick ride around the neighborhood. I can't wait to do it again tonight!

After you have your fitting, gradually build up your time in aero. The first time I took my tri bike out for a ride, I was about 10 minutes aero, 10 minutes on the bullhorns, 10 minutes aero, etc. I thought that I had made some horrible mistake getting the tri bike. The next time I took it out, no problems 90% or so aero. For other people it takes a lot longer. I got my bike in the winter time and I was glad to get out of my winter gear since the jackets kind of pulled my shoulders making the transition more difficult (but on the up side, I had more time to make the change). The big adjustment for me was hydration! That took me forever to figure out! |

Expert 866 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group CLOSED After having had a proper fitting on my P2, I no longer get shoulder or neck pain unless I ride for 3-4 hours or more. I've got things so dialed down that I am more comfortable in Aero. (may not be the most efficient position, I value comfort too much). I also have invested in a brake that is on the right side of my tri aero bar. This allows me to slow when needed (eg. passing driveways), thus allowing me to remain in aero when I otherwise would have had to reach to the normal break. This works very well to scrub speed when needed. It's weighs very little, but the added confidence it gives me well worth it. I've been using it for 4 years and it works great! |

Expert 866 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group CLOSED So how do i get the Manatee Thread on my Dashboard? I see others have this table, listing the names and I would like to use this tool. Good day to all. I'm off to the Y to run on the treadmill. Had a very good session yesterday and did all 3 disciplines (s/b/r). Rarely do I do all 3 but it just worked out that I had the whole day free and had lots of energy. Today is an easy run. Having trouble sticking to the Fink Competitive Plan as I work a weird schedule. |

I hear ya on the weird workdays but as long as you get the time in the saddle/shoes/pool it works out I believe.
First day of HIM training, 45 min on the trainer when I get home. Meant to do it this morning but I had to go in early.
Happy Training all. Also MyHabit, part of amazon is having a sale on Brooks running shoes today |

Master 9705 Raleigh, NC area | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group CLOSED Looking for suggestions on Running Gear. On Sunday, for my long run it was 33 degrees with heavy mist. By the end of my 20 miles, it was 35 degrees and foggy (so an improvement!). At any rate, it was raw out. I wore a long sleeved T and my Brooks Jacket (I think it's an Infiniti Element -- it looks like maybe the Essential Run Jacket replaced it?). Since it was misting heavily when I left home, I was glad for the protection but I ended up dripping sweat by the end of the run. I don't think that a vest would have been a good choice -- I mean I think that of the running gear I have, I chose well but I think that I need to add a softshell/breathable jacket. Suggestions? (I thought I'd do some shopping now and try to pick something up on closeout.) |

(I thought I'd do some shopping now and try to pick something up on closeout.) Unless it is absolutely pouring to the point that I can't see, I don't wear a jacket. It's just too hot. I know when you look outside and it's 33 degrees and raining it is hard to imagine how warm you will be in like 2 miles but it never fails. In fact if it is raining, I wear as few clothes as possible because it is inevitable that they will be drenched by the rain. Of course it helps if the clothes you are wearing are a wicking fabric. So my standard is running tights, long sleeve technical shirt, gloves, headband to keep the ears warm and a hat. The hat has to be the best and most important thing in the rain. I know I am not really answering your question, but I log almost 200 miles a month in Seattle and am pretty experienced in the cold rain. |

Ann-Marie Hmmm. I am still a tri-bike virgin. Perhaps I will get some aero bars on my road bike so that I can be the "everything but/wait til' marriage girl" In the meantime I will enviously return home to my roadie for a reliable but dull ride. |

Extreme Veteran 525 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group CLOSED Envious of the new bike too! Nice Ride. I've been seriously lusting after a new tri-bike and have seriously considered putting both the road bike and mtb up for sale to help finance it. I just can't pull the trigger though. I knew I should've bought the tri-bike to begin with. Not that I don't like my road bike but I just don't ride with groups. At all. Plus I'm not exactly Craig Alexander so I just can't justify a tri-bike when my roadie seems to do just fine. Ah well.
Speaking of biking though. My last couple of rides 17miles and 28miles I decided to experiment and do the whole ride in 1st gear, no shifting. I ride a compact double with a 12-25 cassette so it's not as impressive as it sounds. Plus the terrain is relatively flat with some rolling hills. I figure this might be a good way to build up some leg strength or simulate climbs. Am I totally off here? I still averaged about 19-20mph for both rides. |

I'll usually just wear my tech shirt and arm-warmers for chillier days. If it gets a bit colder I might put on a longsleeve thermal tech shirt. |
