So i read a article on Active.com today.. saying that people that are training for a marathon should not start unless they can comfortably run a base of 20-25 miles a week. Thats not me... I think my peak week for this years training was around 30 miles, with that said I think this will be a rough 26.2 lol. I think i should be a lot better come race day, as i will pretty much be in a Galloway method walking every aid station.

Having a brain cramp...I went to the IMTX Welcome Banquet in '12 but forget if it's free for the athletes. Is it free for us and we have to buy tickets for guests?

Thanks

Brad,

From the athlete guide:

Each athlete will receive complimentary entry into the Welcome Dinner. Your athlete wristband provides you with access to this function. Please do not remove your wristband prior to the function or you will be denied entry. Family and friends must purchase a ticket to attend. Tickets are available for purchase online at WWW.IRONMANCDA.COM and on-site at the entrance on a first-come, firstserved basis. We recommend arriving early, as
these events typically sell out.

Welcome Banquet /Dinner and Athlete Celebration Day Adult tickets (ages 12 and up) are $30 each, children tickets (ages 6 to 11) are $15 each and children 5 and under are free.

Is the bike course a total of 2300ft climbing each loop (4600 total) or is it 2300 total?

Brad,

I personally wouldn't believe much of what is said in that post. The bike course does NOT have 6,100 feet of climbing and NO major highway has a 19.5% grade. Those hills are 6-7% max. There is nothing even close to steepness on this course as there was on the IMSG bike course.

Also note that all the top age group reports on the page are based on the old pre-2012 bike course.

The link below is also a good link for those that have never riddeen the course. It's a good video of someone driving the course while videoing. It's about 1 hour long but worth the watch.

Anyone have an extra room? My husband and I are scheduled to be bike catchers and have not booked a place to stay (my fault!). I have found a few places, but I prefer not to spend $200/night lol

Well, I've been riding courses to simulate about 3,000 ft of climbing.......... not a good time to discover that it's twice that. Guess I'll have to go back and reevaulate my goals. Suck.

I pulled up my Garmin file from last year and it shows just over 4700 ft of gain. I wouldn't guess that any grade was over 6% and even that would be the max with the avg closer to 3-4%. You are either going up or down on this course, not much in the way of flats.

Yes either up or down probably %85 of the course if not more. I've ridden it twice this year so far and I can't really recall a section longer than 1/2 mile that is flat.

The biggest problem is going to be with the no passing coming down mica grade and going up over the bridge as no doubt people will get stuck behind some really slow people. But that is part of the race so there isn't anything none of us can do about it other than find a different race. They try to make it safe for all the people and that is the best they have come up with so far.

So is anyone riding the course this saturday? I'm thinking about going over there and starting my bike about 8am. I have 4.5 hours of riding with a 30 minute run than 30 minute swim.

For the bike I am thinking about 1 full loop than either the small loop and head back out to climb mica grade one more time or 1 full loop plus another 2 small loops.

Run will be the beginning of the course and I'll swim within the swim area.

Yeah my weekend is pretty full. I will sneak in a 30min OWS swim/hour run Saturday and 2 hour brick on Sunday. My next long ride is Monday morning. Hope to do two of the long loops, weather permitting. Looks like Saturdays weather should be good for you. Hard to believe Derek Garcia and those guys can hold 15-16mph on Mica's uphill side. I cant seem to get any faster than 8-9. I hope the Taper brings me fresh legs and a little faster times.

Okay so I am starting to get Butterfly's now. I have a big question. I have an average touring bike. Giant. Nothing but stock grade. But the price was right at 600.00$ My friends have sweeeeet bikes at 2-3,000$. They keep telling me am wasting time on my present bike.

If I had a sweeeet bike. How much time would I save on 112 mile ride? How much endurance-effort-work would I save on a sweeeet bike?

You will save 17:32 if you bought a 3000 bike. Just kidding, i have no idea. If you are no where near a podium time i wouldnt really worry about it and save up for a bike in the future as your training progresses.
