Can I start today over?  Seriously?

I'm also missing my wedding rings.  Couldn't find them anywhere in the 45 minutes I looked.

Did you find them - last time I lost mine they'd fallen off in the fridge into some salad!  They are very loose and if my hands are cold even looser....

*unhappy woof*

Yup. My day too. I did keep trying but eventually gave up. "Eventually" meaning now, at 11:30pm. Don't make that mistake! Call it a wash and do what you wish! If you can.

Sadly I am at work.  Or I would go back to bed.  I got a cold from my co-worker.  He is out sick after infecting everyone during our lab meeting yesterday.

::grumble grumble grumble::

That is one frustration with workplaces.  People feel like they shouldn't call in sick so they get everyone else sick. Sealed

BTW, I followed your blog in my newly aquired Google Reader and I love that you use Penzey's! I started getting my spices there when I lived in Omaha.  We don't have them in NM so I keep a list going for when I'm in Denver.

Seriously!  I get 3 sick days a year, and at least a day's worth goes to Dr. appointments that can't be scheduled during non-work hours.  There is nothing wrong with being sick and keeping your germs to yoruself at home, why is there a stigma over calling in sick?  And why do I only get 3 sick days a year?? Last winter I had to use vacation time to stay home and puke.  Not cool.  Rant over.

That was going to be my question.

Yeah that's pretty rough, I'm like Salty they accrue I think the limit is 700 hours?  The only sick leave I've taken in 7 years was for a kidney surgery.  DW doesn't get sick/annual only PTO (paid time off) so being sick IS a vacation apparently Foot in mouth

DH gets like 20 days sick leave and it accumulates every year.  He is a mailman so that's public sector.

Me I get 8 days first year in job then i think 13 every year after and it accumulates - I probably have a bout 15 to take - one on Monday for bike coaching.  Then next Thursday DH and Artemis are flying up to Sydney for a short vacation as it's school hols and he has the time off.  He has a cousin there (he's Greek he has a cousin in every state/town in Australia and the US!)  They are going for 5 days.

I'm very excited that he is off for two weeks coz that means 5.15am swim squad!  Monday, Tues, Weds Friday - how's that!  Cannot wait!  I think next week is going to be a defining turning point for me with the bike thing.

Anyway hope everyone has a better day - mine started well with a 45min drainer ride at 5.15am!  Soooooo sweaty!

SmileSmileCryCry - this reflects my mood today - up and down - laughing or crying!

Artemis - 2012-09-18 5:08 PM Dudes! I rode my bike today!!

Awesome!  No wrist issues?

Rode my trainer so I could sit up.  Still having wrist issues.  Got one last cortisone shot before surgery that doesn't seem to be working.

Sorry about the wrist - however coming into the off season could be a good time for surgery - shouldn't be long before you can run again....

That's the plan.  I want to train for a marathon over the winter and wrist surgery shouldn't interfere with that.  My mom is also going to come for the week that I'll be casted to help out with the baby.  Sounds really rough for her - free ticket to visit her granddaughter for a week or so.

I reckon it's gone on vacation with mine somewhere warm and sunny with a beach and no kids....

Ooh...that sounds amazing!  I asked my husband when mommies get vacation.  He laughed.

Mine are still kind of tight from pregnancy, so I definitely set them down.  Guessing I took them off to wash my hands, set them by the coffee makers, and got distracted by packing up everything for daycare.

WooHoo! Lost wedding rings suck. I have two guesses on your mornings. They must be fun, so much fun that jewelry disappears. Either that, or busy. Since you have a baby, I'm going to guess that busy is the answer. BTW, that eventually eases up. I've heard that anyway.

I've been a morning runner since I started. Prior to that I was at the gym lifting at 5:00 am, it is just how I roll. When I started running, I had no light, I just found routes in the neighborhood that had street lights. Last Christmas I received an Energizer headlamp. It worked, was a bit heavy, but functional. It freed up the morning runs a bit. It has bit the farm, as I am a bit sweaty, and it was not the best piece of equipment. I just picked up a Princeton Byte, which is real lightweight and has a few different settings. And it was under $20 at Sports Authority. The drawback is that it has no red back light (although in fairness, neither did the Energizer). As we move towards fall, there is more running in darkness for some of us, I imagine. Is anyone else using a light, or considering a light this year? If you use one, what one do you use and why? If you don't and you run in the dark, are you comfortable with that?

Thanks all, have a great day!

I wear a headlamp when I run and when I walk Emma.  I do this to be more visible to anyone else who might be out and about at that time.  Most of the roads that I run on have street lights so I can see without it.  I actually wear my running hat and put the headlamp on over it.  This is very comfortable for me.

If I were to use a headlamp so that I could see well in dark areas, I would have to ditch the hat.  Obviously the hat blocks some of the light I could be using to see where I was going.  If I were doing trail running in the dark or thought that I really really need to run on that road over there that does not have street lights, I would consider getting a headlamp that had a band that goes over the head instead of just around it.  Since I run in the dark pretty much year round, this would be a good investment.  As things are now, I feel comfortable with being seen and keeping to relatively well lit areas.

TJ and Other Interested Manatees,

This morning I was look at wappwolf (automates stuff, for example, if you put a file in a dropbox directory, it can email it, upload it, turn it into an ebook, etc.).  Anyway, all I wanted it to do was email someone else that the file is available.  I was testing it and I got mad and googled about email alerts.

I'm not sure what secret sauce that I entered as search terms but Google spat out, IFTTT (https://ifttt.com/).  Huh, what's that site all about.  Well...  it can do what you asked for with RSS feeds/blogs.  It looks like you can have the entire content of the blog post emailed to you.

I'm not planning on leaving Google Reader anytime soon but this might be useful in some cases.

Enjoy!

I have two headlamps. One of them was super cheap (like $5), and like you said, it's a little heavy and a little funky, but it works. My husband bought a second one for a little more (maybe $15?) at Recreation Outlet. It's lighter and is more comfortable. Neither has the back red light, but now that you mention it, I think I could just get a small button type light and either attach it to the back of the head lamp or to the back of my reflective vest. I should probably do that.

I'm not comfortable running in the dark without a light because I am prone to falling. Embarassed Besides, with my headlamp, I can see all of the little creature eyes staring at me from the ditches as I run by. That's actually a little freaky.

Sigh.

I've been having some bad one-sided headaches lately and wrote them off as part of the sinus infection / aftermath /whatever.

I went to the dentist today for a broken tooth (been broken since last week or before but couldn't get in 'til now). Good news is that's fixable; one root canal and a lot of pain and grumbling now, but it's been treated and I'll get the permanent crown next week.

He also looked at another tooth (hindmost molar) that suddenly became very sensitive (okay, flat-out painful too) a few days ago.

Yesterday when I had that really lousy day I had woken up with a headache and could just not get with it all day, and was running a low fever.

Same story today.

Turns out the tooth is badly infected. It's already had two root canal treatments so now it's just got to go. But the infection is yucky enough that it's infecting me systemically and the dentist (he's actually a U. Mich trained maxillofacial surgeon) would like it to clear up a little bit before yanking the tooth.

He knows I'm an athlete and he said absolutely no training this week and then not for two weeks after the tooth removal.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH! Right now, right smack at peak phase training for Ironman!

Shyte. I feel like I can't catch a break. Maybe Ironman will just be a case of whenever I have enough accumulated base built up and get lucky with good conditions and everything coming together on the day.

Deep down, I am very grateful, even joyful that I can have these things treated and have the means to do so. I'm just really unhappy about outside things right now. And feeling rather sorry for myself, which I find very distasteful. And I'm whining. So attractive.

People have real problems and I know this isn't one of them. I just need to sulk and hoooOOOoooooowl for a bit.

Well, I did a very short slow run this morning to test my toe, and I think it is fine. It is still a little sore, but nothing horrible. To make it worse, I think something bit me on the top of that same foot last night. I have a really itchy spot -- probably a mosquito bite. But that bothered me more on the run this morning than the stupid toe joint.

I skipped cardioABS last night because I didn't want to be jumping all over that toe, but I think I will go to spin class tonight. Cycling doesn't seem to bother it much. I didn't want to run on Friday, but I think I will go out for an easy 3-5 miles. Then Saturday is a "rest" day. (Not much rest since we're going to the Scottish Festival in a nearby town -- another excuse for the men in my family to don their kilts.) Then Sunday is the race! I'm setting a very conservative goal @11 min miles -- I know I have no shot at a podium position. I would need sub 10 minute miles to do that, and I don't think that's happening over 13 miles with a still-a-little-sore bum toe. Undecided Dang it.

So my plan is to attach myself to the 2:30 pacer and hope to kick it up a notch in the last half. I wish I could hang with the 2:15 pacer, but I think that will start me out too quickly, and I'm afraid of exploding near the end. I really want to negative split. I try to run everything that way. Even my run this morning was like that -- 10 minutes out; 7 minutes back. I love that.

Sorry for the blather. Thinking "out loud," I guess.

Oh, no!!! I am so sorry. That really sucks. But you need to listen to the doctor. You can't fool around with that kind of an infection.

Still. Really crappy timing. Stupid tooth.

Off training topic . . .

If those of you who are of the praying kind could say prayers for me, and others of you think positive thoughts . . .

I have applied for a new position in a southern California college. My husband and I really want to get out of here. My pay is dismal, and our living expenses keep going up. (I'm not going to blame any particular political party; I actually think that this is our "new normal," and I'm not expecting anyone to improve my financial situation but myself -- thus the proposed job change.)

The position has not been advertised, and my friend who works there doesn't think they will advertise it if they like me. They have contacted me for a phone interview, so that should happen this week or next.

It would be better for us in so many ways. As my husband said the other day, he and I have never had a re-boot. When we got married, he moved into my house. Granted, my ex husband barely lived there two years -- not even, actually -- but my husband has never really felt like it is "his" house -- even though he's lived there for seven plus years.

I just want to be sure that we make the right decision, or at least the best decision for us and our family.

I'd be happy to pray with you for God's will in this. My son is a college student in SoCal and speaks very highly of the options for higher education there. From almost no-where Kansas to SoCal.  That would be quite a re-boot!

I'm glad this topic came up as i have been thinking about doing some 0'dark:thirty runs.  I'm thinking that once i start my HIM training and two-a-days I'm going to need to utilize my mornings better.  Since i get up early MWF for swim I figured I should get up early TTh for bike/run.

Oh, no!!! I am so sorry. That really sucks. But you need to listen to the doctor. You can't fool around with that kind of an infection.

Still. Really crappy timing. Stupid tooth.

Agreed. I know it is hard for you, Queen Manatee, but you REALLY need to follow doctors orders!!! It will be better for you in the long run.

Lots of prayers for you and your clan.
