There was about 2 inches of nice dry powdery snow on the ground - perfect for a soft run and much, much better than the icy conditions I was struggling with about a week ago.
I love running in the snow, it makes me happy! Fixed that for ya! |

Veteran 256 | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed I sympathize with (and have a lot of respect for) all of you in northern climes who are training in the cold and snow. But if you persist you will reap the benefits when the weather gets better. Keep at it! Tomorrow is the A1A Marathon and Half Marathon nearby in Ft. Lauderdale. I really sort of wanted to do the Half, especially because it loks like it will be IRC tomorrow. A cold front is going through today and it will be spectacular on Sunday, if a bit breezy. I run best in cool/cold weather. My sometimes Training Partner is the 4 hour Marathon Pace Bunny. But with the $100 price to register for the HM last minute at the Expo, and not being in Race shape at all, I decided to run an HM on my own this morning instead! So 13.1 solo, thus boring miles at a comfortable training pace. 2 hours exactly, with the last 4 or 5 miles in the 8:40's. Everyone have a good weekend, whether racing or not. Those long solo runs build character. I was just sitting here dreaming of putting the tights away for the season and breaking out the shorts. Honestly, those cold, quiet, snowy runs are very peaceful and beautiful. I miss it. |

Elite 3072 san francisco | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed Just stopping in on a break from work to tell you about my morning. So, last night was a late one, as we celebrated my BIL's 60th birthday at a fave Italian restaurant in North Beach. It was a beautiful, balmy night so we strolled the neighborhood before climbing up the many hills to our little Mini parked pretty legally between two garages. My mom was a trooper and easily scaled that steep hill. Drove her home, took Ripley the wonder dog out for a walk and crawled into bed past midnight. I have this 10 miler I wanted to get done this weekend but have a million and a half things to do on Sunday and knew I'd have to ride my bike to work today because I left my car at work last night before the party. Anyway, there is a point to all of this build up! So, at 6, my alarm goes off and I crawl deeper into the covers. Ripley crawls up a little closer to see if we are going to go out. I give her a little pat on the rump and say, maybe later...she snores, I snore, then the snooze goes off! Ripley puts both of her paws on my back and nuzzles me. How can I resist??? So, I dragged my sorry butt out of bed, put the running clothes on and she's waiting by the front door. I took her for the first 5 miles of the run (which was all I thought I'd be able to do...) and then went out and finished the rest feeling great. I wonder if she can do that for me for swimming??? I love my dog. Have a wonderful weekend everyone! Maybe Suzy will check in from paradise. |

I also bounded out the door to do my long run along the ocean, although without my furry friend. It was already 76F when I started with a whopping 22mphENE winds. I think I built a little mental toughness, although I think I will need both Kim and Linda to cheer my sorry a$$ to the finish line if I expect to deliver a marathon PR. Holy Carp, I forgot how hard it is to run a stand alone marathon. I am still trying to hydrate and then Paul and I will probably find a lunch spot and maybe another beach. hard to say, I feel like I fried myself from the inside out and the outside in! My family was wonderful! My wife got the kids out of bed before the sun was up, drove 50 minutes to the race and braved near-freezing temperatures. We're in South Texas so you probably need to subtract 30 degrees to understand how we felt. One quick teaser picture: |

Thanks, Kyla! After saying I wasn't racing this weekend, I decided to go to a swim meet with some friends from my masters team. I had to bring my kids along and they were great - very patient with the long afternoon. I swam several events, and qualified for masters nationals in the 200 breaststroke. Super happy about that! Masters is very inclusive, so you don't have to make the qualifying times to swim at nationals, but you can do more events if you have some qualifying times. Kim - thanks for sharing your story about Ripley the wonder dog. She is awesome, and she's also the most photogenic dog I know! Caleb - congratulations on your race! Suzy - Great job getting your long run done in the heat and wind! Say hello to the nenes for me! Love those silly things. |

How do you feel today? Julia--you're such an all-around great athlete. Very proud of you. Trevor---so HAPPY that you had a good time and you're back checking in with the group. We missed you! Linda---did you want to share your long run with the group? 24m at a 8:35 pace is rocking Missy. I'm a little sore this morning, especially lower back, probably from fighting the wind. Have an easy recovery run in 30mph winds today (YOWZA) and then am planning to watch badger basketball at 8am HI time! Can't believe we actually get it in Kauai. They've had some great wins so far this season. After that, who knows. The beach might sand blast us a little too much today, b ut we'll see. |

Veteran 287 Tucson | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed Caleb, nice job! How awsome to get that first race done! Julia, congratulations, lady! So I have barely been on the boards the last few days as I have come to realize that my first tri has a slim chance of happening. My injuries are bigger than I originally thought. My PT finally isolated my knee pain. It is my lateral meniscus rather than ITBS. I do have some tight IT bands as a separate problem. I am almost positive that the meniscus problem was from poor squat form. A day late and a dollar short. My hip flexor on my left side is fine. The pain I have had in that area is impingement from femoral anterior glide syndrome. Same thing that I used to get on the right side all the time but was misdiagnosed. My plan (I love a good plan!) is to rehab my injuries and work on the weak areas. Then find a run coach to help me with form and injury prevention. Now that I have a plan hopefully I can stop crying. I am off to go lick my wounds. Be careful with strength training and listen to your bodies! Edited to fix paragraphs. Stupid phone! Everything just gets lumped together instead of doing paragraphs.
