Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed A little sore today, but not too bad considering. Here is the first race report. I will work on the other one later. Closest I will get to a workout today is to take the dog to the lake for a swim after work, she will swim, I will throw the ball! |

Veteran 253 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Ken-sorry your half didn't go as planned. Back pain is no joke! The two crashes I'm sure affected your psyche. Two races in two days is still impressive!! Jamie-how did that happen to your eye? Did something fly into it? That's got to be frustrating! Traveling back from a great weekend in WI. It was so nice to get out on the course & meet so many nice people! Ken, I was really happy on Saturday, I had a blast on the bike course! The course is very scenic with lots of variety, & dare I say fun. Granted, like Kathleen said, we only did one loop & the out & back, so I'm pretty sure it won't be as much "fun" on the 2nd loop. I really enjoyed experiencing the course with Kathleen, & her company made things go by faster. My takeaway is that my training is on track, but now is the time to put my head down these next 2 months & have a solid finish to my training to ensure a good race day September 8th. Oh, anyone else watching any TDF? Watched them climb to the top of Mt Ventoux. How they can go that fast UP was so humbling, & fun to watch. |

Veteran 253 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Jamie-you will be fine w/ the HIM distance! The biggest issue I had was nutrition. The longer I was out there were two things I came across. First, as it gets hotter things get warmer & I didn't like sweet drinks warm. Second, I got tired of the constant sweet, sweet, sweet & had to break it up. Although this was an issue for me, it might not bother you at all. Luckily, this is something you will figure out in training, not on race day! |

Member 326 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Happy Monday everyone. I completed my HIM on Saturday in Morden, Manitoba. I have a race report if any of you are interested. Click on my profile photo and follow the Go To Race Log link. Just say I was happy with my swim, disappointed with the bike, and very happy with the run. It was a very hot and humid day. I knocked off 30 minutes from my time compared to last year's race, so that is a positive. I finished strong and had lots left in the tank. I am amazed how the training has made me so much stronger and how quickly I can bounce back from the training and racing efforts. This was just a "B" race to practice nutrition/hydration, transitions, and pacing for IM Wisconsin. Hard to believe that it is just 8 weeks (55 days) away. I have been training since November for that race and I am just surprised how quickly it has come up. Happy training everyone. Dwayne Edited by DeVinci13 2013-07-15 7:49 PM |

I saw some of the pictures Kathleen posted on FB and it looked like you were having fun too!! I have been hit or miss with the Tour this year, but yeah, those guys can climb!! A couple of years ago, when I was spending a lot of time in southern CA. I was riding with the bike shop group on a flat section in a pace line. We were thinking we were moving. Floyd Landis went by us like we were sitting still! He didn't even look like he was working hard. |

New user 160 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Hi All! Just catching up on posts... Dwayne, congrats on your race! And I agree that even though the training year seems so long at the start, the races get here so quickly! My plan started in January, and my IM is less than 6 weeks away--seems like it all went by so quickly! Ken, congrats on your weekend of racing, even if it didn't go as planned. And of course sorry that you had to experience the horrible accident side of triathlons. Ali, I am pretty much addicted to Le Tour! We don't have cable (we use Roku), so we paid the $30 this year for the online package from NBC Sports and it's great. I can have the stage on in the background at work, there is extended coverage, we can watch a lot of extra stuff at home. Yesterday on the rest day we watched Stage 13 from last week--the flat stage where a few teams took advantage of the crosswinds and totally blew the race apart--probably the most exciting flat stage there has ever been! And it's great that you and Kathleen got to preview the course. I wish I had time to go up to Louisville to do one of the bike preview rides they have, but I just won't be able to fit it in. I had a great week of training last week, only missed one planned session (a strength training session), and I really needed my rest day yesterday, I was whipped! Friday morning I had a great swim, Friday evening I ran 10 miles, Saturday I did a 5 hour ride (96 miles) followed by a 1-hour run, my longest brick to date. I felt like I was melting on that run it was so hot and humid, but amazingly my pace was really fast! I ran the same route this morning and was 3 1/2 minutes slower over 7 miles! So that was a real confidence booster. My legs were pretty tired Sunday for my long run of 14.7 miles, but I felt pretty good overall. Less than 6 weeks to go! Here's my blog from this week, about trying to maintain a winning attitude: http://beakersironmanjourney.blogspot.com/2013/07/on-winning-attitu... Happy Training! |

My youngest brother did his first sprint today at the mini mussel sprint. I just checked my bike in to transition tonight and I'm pretty much a mix of excited and nervous for tomorrow. Well, we'll just have to see how it goes. I looked for you today! Closest I came was your transition spot but you werent there and I passed 1798 on the bike! ken - my bib number is 1799. I'm going in wave 4. I was looking for you out there too. Misssed you in transition both times. I did see both 33 and 31 multiple times though. Go figure. I'll post a race report soon, but for right now, lets just say it didn't quite go to plan... at all. |

Member 258 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Becky, I really liked your blog post this week about mental attitude. My training buddy has been so down on herself and her performances over the past 9 months, and I really feel like mental strength and resilience is totally underrated. Bad luck, illness, corneal abrasions all happen and somehow we have to keep ourselves motivated and on track and HAVING FUN which is really what this is all about. Does anyone have any books or resources for "mental strength training" that they've found useful? |

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Becky, I finally got a chance to read your last 2 blog posts. Funny how in IM training a week of good or not so good workouts can impact your outlook. I am glad as your race draws closer that you are feeling more positive about the race. Macca has had several articles in Triathlon on getting through the low points in races and we all have them. You mentioned the toughness of some of the TDF riders. I read Tyler Hamilton's book, he was a team mate of Lance Armstrong, and he talks about how he ground down some of his teeth during tough efforts. To some degree the success of some of the elite athletes is not as much about a physical advantage over us average age groupers, but the mental focus to go after one goal all out. I really enjoy your blogs!! |

It should be public now I think I saw your brother and friend that you were talking about. Every couple of miles they would ride by yelling all sorts of encouragement and then they would be at the next corner with some of the funniest signs I saw all day!! Pass on that they were a big help to many of us.. Great race, that run was brutal to many of us. The swim is a challenge for sighting on a sunny day as you do part of the leg right into the sun. I enjoyed your race report!! |

Bad luck, illness, corneal abrasions all happen and somehow we have to keep ourselves motivated and on track and HAVING FUN which is really what this is all about. Does anyone have any books or resources for "mental strength training" that they've found useful? Doh--I had meant to add HAVING FUN to the list of positive mental notes to remember! I have read many times over from people who have completed an IM to remember to HAVE FUN during the race, and to smile. I have to remember that, because in most races when I think I'm smiling (at a camera or friends/family) it looks like a grimace of pain! So I have to work on the smiling part. And I definitely think mental strength and resilience is just as important as the physical part of endurance events! And it must be trained, just like our bodies do. I have a question for everyone on pre-race nutrition for an IM. I think I have my nutrition plan fairly set for during the race--probably some tweaking left to do, but I've used the race-provided food and drink for my long rides/runs, and so far no stomach issues, and as long as I get in enough of it early, I've had no energy or bonking issues. However, I am not sure what to eat the day before and the morning of. For my past HIMs (of which I've only done 2), I ate two rice cakes with peanut butter and banana, plus some Gatorade, water, and then a Gatorade PRE 100 calorie drink pouch just before the swim. I'm thinking chicken and rice for a late lunch/early dinner the day before, and maybe a small smoothie before bed. But I'll be in a hotel, so I'm worried about finding a place to get the proper food. |

Extreme Veteran 601 Cold Spring, NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Great racing Dwayne! It's good to read all the fine training you are all doing. I finally broke a several week slump of sleeping in after bad nights' of sleep and got in some short bike/swim this AM. One day doesn't make a streak, but its a start. I also went back to lookup results from the last sprint. while the overall time was disappointing, I had a solid bike (for me), a very good run (second overall, behind the 20 something speedster who won) and had a good time. Happy training all! |
