I have a bike aid station question for the IM veterans.

How is water handed out? Really, is it in a cup like a run aid station or a bottle I can put in a bottle cage or squirt into my PD aero bottle?

Just starting to think about cage space on my bike. I have the aero bottle up front and a two cage system behind my seat. I keep my minimal tools and spare tube in a bottle, which usually rides behind the seat. So that gives me space for one other bottle. If absolutely necessary I can add a cage to the seat tube as well.

All Ironman-branded events now give out cage-ready squirt-top bottles of water and Ironman Perform on the bike.   It's supposed to be crazy hot on race day - would recommend adding that extra bottle.

It was 80 degrees and sunny here in NC today!  Got in a tough, hilly 30 mile bike ride with a couple good buddies.

Anyone local in Charlotte NC?  I am heading to Charlotte for work this week and staying at the Westin on College St. I would love to have a suggestion for a good 5 to 6mi run route near the hotel; something pretty safe that will keep me from becoming a hood ornament!!! Thanks Jeremy

Tri Sam - 2011-02-25 7:01 PM Yeah, I would love to ride the course, but I've heard similar tales of woe regarding the lack of welcome wagon for athlete's riding it. I don't want to discourage people from riding, but please, please, please, be careful and be submissive to the "race fans" in 2,000 pounds of metal who are none-to-thrilled to have us grace there roadways.

I honestly think that the tacks and glass on the course is an urban legend. Every year it supposedly happens at some Ironman race and I have yet to see any aside from the little pieces here and there from a broken bottle or whatever. In 2010 it was said to happen at Ironman WI, but like I said  earlier I didn’t see anything.

There was an incident or two with Red Dodge Ram truck (http://www.wlky.com/r/25745930/detail.html) that was running people off the road on The Louisville course. He has since been caught (see link).

With all that said, don’t litter, pick up after yourself and don’t take up the whole rode. Some of the locals get pretty upset here because some weekends hundreds of people will be out on the IMOO bike course; they will ride 3 or 4 people wide and will not move over for traffic. The course is littered with spent C02 cartridges, empty gel packs, tubes you name it. I just moved to Madison last May but for the last two years that I came up here from Chicago, I would drive the loop after I rode it and pick up trash.

While this is your race course, it’s their home.

Hi gang,
My first tri of the year is on Saturday, I am so excited. The race is a late start, 11 am, its a sprint, so a pool swim of 600 meters, a 12.4 mile bike, and a 3.1 mile run. It will be my first race with my tri bike, and the first tri my husband will see, he was deployed for all my tris last year.

Hi everyone!!! I just need to hear POSITIVE things about this race Please!!! and here is why: In the last few days I have heard very negative things like the tacks on the street during the IM race, how unfriendly the locals were, due to the time trial people are lining up at 3am? or earlier?...Ohio river water is very dirty and disgusting...ran out of hydration... etc etc...Now the above is from prior racers.

However! I am super excited to do the race and I am trying to stay away from the "bad energy people" but sometimes it is hard to shut people..lol...I also know that there will always be complainers.

But, lets hear some positive stuff from prior racers!!! ;-)

Happy training...Alicia

I was there in 2010:

Locals-  Really great.  I think there was one moron who dumped some tacks a few years ago and it has given all the locals a bad rep.

Ohio River- I've swam in worse.  It's not pristine glacial run off, but it's fine.

3 am line up for the start-  I had some friends grab me a spot and I think they got there about 5 am.  We were in 5 mins after the gun, but if I had it to do all over again I would get in last.  I'm not going to have any trouble making the cut off and the front of the line was full of bad swimmers.

Lack of water-  Ok, they screwed this up.  According to weather.com it was 95 that day and they weren't prepared for it.  That's pretty bad for a race that costs $600.  The problem is that there is a big gap between the second to the last and the last aid station.  IIRC  85ish miles and then 106 miles.  Well, everyone grabbed water and an extra at the 85 mile aid station.  btw, they ran out pretty early in the race and the volunteers were refilling old bottles as fast as they could.  Those locals sure weren't anti IM.

The POSITIVE thing is that you are racing! I wouldn't get too caught up in all of the other stuff.
Focus on what YOU can control; plan for the rest but don't obsess. Hey that rhymes!

It is a great race, Alicia.

The river, while not a glacier-fed stream (as DH mentioned), is not too bad.  People really do line up at 3am (or before!).  I agree with DH's advice (though I refused to listen to reason on race day) about waiting to start at the back of the swim if you aren't worried about the swim cutoff.  All swimmers are in the water within 30 minutes, but an extra 30 minutes after sun-up is 30 minutes of sun/heat that you don't have to run in so why not avoid the rush and take your time getting to the start?

The bike course is beautiful rolling hills with cows and horses.  There were several folks who sat outside in their yards all day to cheer on the racers.  There were tacks one year, but I don't think there have been any since.   They really did run out of water at 2 aid stations last year.  It was poor planning, but the volunteers at those aid stations did the very best they could to give us some kind of water.  I would expect IM to correct the issue this year.

The run is flat and there are tons of spectators and things to look at.

Just remember to go slower than you think is necessary on the bike (seriously) and use good heat-management strategies to lower your core temp.

The locals in Louisville were great and there are tons of cool places to eat there.  The only time we saw any aggressive drivers on the course was in the days leading up to the race when cyclists were not staying to the right or were riding two-abreast and holding up traffic.  If you want to preride parts of the course, the out-n-back section is a good place to do.  It is (IMHO) the hardest part of the course and you can park at a church at the beginning of it.  The rest of the course would be OK to ride, I think, but it might be best to wait for a weekday or early weekend morning when there is not much traffic.

Good luck with your training,
Steph

From my ride this morning. The Ohio is UP! This is where you will be swimming in 25 weeks give or take...

This is from the Indiana (the good side) side. Directly across from Louisville.

Aahhhh!   finally feel as though that nasty cold/flu is out of my system.  I'm back on the Be Iron Fit training plan other than swimming.  a bad cough and swimming don't go too well together.  I am going to jump back into the pool tomorrow and see what I can do.

Stay the course, folks.  Longer days and better weather are just around the corner. that's something we Alaskans have to remind ourselves of every March.

Cheers,

Nathan

trirun26 - Alicia

All I can tell you from my perspective is that Ironman Louisville is a great venue! My experience doing this Ironman was such a thrill and high that I chose to do it again. Louisville is a great city with great people and everyone was so friendly.

My attitude doing this Ironman was one where I was standing there at the starting line healthy and ready and I had no expectations. I knew I had done the workouts and practiced enough to get me through the finish line. My only goal was to finish (deep down I had another one). During an event like this one all you can do is roll with the punches, do the best you can, and never give up.

Tri Sam-

Yes, I'll have a lap counter and timer. I'm very excited for this swim because I've never done any kind of 'just a swim' type races! The only swimming I do is in triathlon.

gobey007 - 2011-02-27 7:37 PM My twenty six week plan starts tomorrow...who is with me??

I'm with ya! I'm doing the Matt Fitz week-by-week training guide plan. This week has gone really good so far. 2 swims, 2 runs and a bike so far... and it's only wed! I nailed a killer tempo today (I'm also in training for a marathon on April 30th). That gave me such a confidence boost!

Good luck with the rest of your week!
