Looking for suggestions on Running Gear.

On Sunday, for my long run it was 33 degrees with heavy mist.  By the end of my 20 miles, it was 35 degrees and foggy (so an improvement!).  At any rate, it was raw out.

I wore a long sleeved T and my Brooks Jacket (I think it's an Infiniti Element -- it looks like maybe the Essential Run Jacket replaced it?). Since it was misting heavily when I left home, I was glad for the protection but I ended up dripping sweat by the end of the run. I don't think that a vest would have been a good choice -- I mean I think that of the running gear I have, I chose well but I think that I need to add a softshell/breathable jacket. Suggestions?

(I thought I'd do some shopping now and try to pick something up on closeout.)

I hate to say it, but I'm glad to live in FL right now.  I'll usually just wear my tech shirt and arm-warmers for chillier days.  If it gets a bit colder I might put on a longsleeve thermal tech shirt.

Normally I where tights or capris for cold runs with a tech shirt and often a vest.  It's the 25-35 degree runs, especially the wet ones, that I have problems with (there is no reason to get special geat run in below 25 in Raleigh, NC).

Envious of the new bike too!  Nice Ride.  I've been seriously lusting after a new tri-bike and have seriously considered putting both the road bike and mtb up for sale to help finance it.  I just can't pull the trigger though.  I knew I should've bought the tri-bike to begin with.  Not that I don't like my road bike but I just don't ride with groups. At all. Plus I'm not exactly Craig Alexander so I just can't justify a tri-bike when my roadie seems to do just fine.  Ah well.

Speaking of biking though.  My last couple of rides 17miles and 28miles I decided to experiment and do the whole ride in 1st gear, no shifting.  I ride a compact double with a 12-25 cassette so it's not as impressive as it sounds.  Plus the terrain is relatively flat with some rolling hills.  I figure this might be a good way to build up some leg strength or simulate climbs.  Am I totally off here?  I still averaged about 19-20mph for both rides.

As long as your knees aren't hurting and your cadence isn't dipping too low, which if you're at 19-20, don't think that's a problem. Good riding!

X2, as long as the knees feel no/little pain.  And along with Keye I have no knowledge of cold rainy weather running.

So I figured out how to get the bike properly set up on the trainer and got a 45 min ride in tonight, yeah much different this time around, I now understand all the complaints about the trainer but it beats trying to ride in the dark, too many close calls when I worked night shift so try not to on my free time.  Run and Swim tomorrow.  Anyone do/have done Masters swimming?  There is a group that would work out well for me but I'm not sure what to expect.

Allen you ready for 6 Nations Rugby?  I can usually get a few games in the states- the wife and I want to make it over there one year during the action.

Here are my best buddies.  The gold one is Calvin who passed a month ago (rest in peace) and the dark one is Hobbes.  Calvin had a great life.  Hobbes is coping well but needs a companion.

Re: masters swimming -- all masters swimming are not created equal. Some do freestyle a lot, which is conducive to our tri stuff, some do what I call swimmer's swimming, that includes IM. Now, I don't know about you, but I'm not a butterfly swimmer. It might make for America's funniest videos however.

Ask the pool or someone who swims there and the coach what it entails. Find out how many people and what lane you would be in. Usually it goes by your 100 time (either yards or meters depending on which pool length you have) that you can sustain for a 500 or so. If you're not a swimmer from childhood, or didn't swim competitively, they speak a whole other language, we non swimmers without blowholes in our armpits may not understand at first. But you can learn it and you can make some great friendships as you're huffing and puffing and drinking chlorine.

I would definitely recommend a masters program, but it kind of depends on where you are with your swimming. I started with an instructional masters type workout and still always do lots of drills in the water since I wasn't born with the swim gene or the blowholes in armpits.I've been and seen 3 or 4 masters types of swim sessions and they're all different.

I think masters swimming is good, but if you can'tfind a masters program that fits or clicks for you, there are workouts that you can do on your own, too.

You might even go to swim at the same time as masters and see what its like from afar. Just a few thoughts from someone who started swimming 20 minutes at a time 4 years ago and has worked pretty hard to "get it." I'm still working on it though -- always a new challenge.

Morning Manatees!! I'm off for a 3 1/2 hour "hilly" ride at an aerobic pace followed by a 20 minute T-run. Sound like fun? At least we have some beautiful weather here in SoCal -- 70's and sunny and hopefully not too awful windy.

Have a great day!

What gorgeous pups! Those are some VERY human-like faces. Real soul in those dogs! Are you planning to get Hobbes a pal?

I am FINALLY back home in Bali. Thanks for being livelee supportee Manatees in my absence!

Five very busy, stressful weeks dealing with my parents, their health and emotional issues (and mine!) and their highly overnumbered and unruly house staff while Iron training really took its toll on me. Have been sleeping for most of the last 24 hours and plan to turn off my poodle (computer) soon and zzzzzz some more.

On a very, very, very sad note, Gollum (my freaky-eyed cat who follows the Hobbit Maid around, hence the name) went missing in my absence and has not yet returned. FYI for those inclined to send furry family vibes for her safe reappearance. Also for those specifically inclined, St. Gertrude is the patron saint of cats, St. Anthony for missing things, and St. Jude for lost causes (pretty much any pet of mine falls into the latter category).

Hope Gollum turns-up soon Yanti.  I'm sure he'll find his way home soon.

So went on another run today. A little over 4 miles. Yay!  Slightly below a 9:00 pace. Yay!!

Slightly sore knee. Boo!

I guess I better stop procrastinating and do those ITB stretches.

Planning on running a 5k this weekend with the whole family. 3year old and 4 month old included.  Be the first time running with the Double.  We'll see how that works. Looks like a pretty cushy ride eh?

I hope Golum makes it back Yanti- good kitty vibes headed your way.

That's a sweet ride Keye, how's the engine on that thing? Wink  When I had my ITB issues in October the foam roller was a god send plus 2-3 icings a day helped me get most of my runs in.

Well it was one of those days today for me.  Got my run in but only did 25 of the thirty minutes, had a dog start to come at me and Slammer so turned around early, probably below 10/min mile pace but had to stop for sniff breaks.  THen went to the gym after work to do some strength training and a swim, no luck pool is closed, again, apparently pool company didn't know how to properly chlorinate a commercial pool...  it's starting to tick me off every other month it seems the pool gets shutdown for something else for the past year +.  Going to go to Masters swimming tomorrow hopefully it'll work out.

Oh my goodness, Yanti, your missing kitties are becoming epidemic.  Sending good vibes.  Hoping Gollum turns up.   It breaks my heart, as I'm sure it does yours, when your kitties disappear.  I still think of little Suicide.      Sending Gollum-locating vibes.  Prayers sent to Sts. Anthony, Gertrude, and Jude.  The big three of missing kitty saints!!

I have not caught up with all the posts but nice training, racing, kids, bike porn, swimming, biking, running, eating, and anything else that we have to celebrate.   Everytime I start reading, I get interrupted and it seems when I come back there are 2 more pages.   I love our active group!!

You all ROCK!!!  (sorry that seems like a "form-letter" response but it is meant with lots of enthusiasm and maybe some exhaustion, vacation recovery is hard.)

Whew!  Finally internet cable is back up and I can catch up!  Between snow, power outage, sick, internet cable down, work getting back to normal!!

got back to swimming on Tuesday..wow that was hard after 2 weeks off.  Thankfully, the snow made my lane mates take a forced vacation too...so we were all hurting puppies.

Hope kittie shows up soon!!

ARG!  It's not like they give you a discount when you go to use the pool and you can't!  And the thing with swimming is that I typically start my ride from my driveway and start my run from my driveway and start my swim by packing cr*p in my car, driving to the gym, changing into a swimsuit...  So it takes a lot of time anyway.  If I had to turn around and drive to another place to swim...  ARG!  Anyway, I feel your pain.

Regarding the masters swim -- looking forward to hearing all about it!

Yanti, may you get your cat back soon.  I have a soft spot for all animals.  I cannot count how many times while biking I will pull over to assist a turtle, or snake back to the creek on the side of the road.

Ha!  Naturally aspirated 4-cylinder that's misfiring apparently.

Sucks about the rushing dog and the pool.  Thankfully I don't have dogs coming after me on the run..yet.  I can comisserate on the pool too.  Local Y is generally okay but every so often they have these mysterious shutdowns.  Then swim season starts and every school in the area seems to have practice and meets there which significantly cuts down available lap times.

Missed the masters but I did email the coach to get information and it should work out well.  Got my run in last night but the mental effort was killing me just about out of gas thankgoodness its friday.  Got an early trainer ride in this morning and running tonight, hopefully the dog wont be a drag the whole time, ended up having to take him back after the first mile and getting that push to go out the door after I had done 2 miles to finish up was rough.  Also e-mailed about a group ride in the area so hopefully I can get in on that this weekend.

Happy weekend training Manatees, what have yall got on tap?

Good job!  I went to masters this am where we did some speed work (which I hate, but really need).  Saturday I'll run about 12 miles and then hit the pool for about 45 minutes.  After that I will eat a lot!

Looks like you're getting everything lined up for your HIM training. Great work!! Have a good ride/run today and maybe just leave the dog this time?

Enjoy the group ride.
