I love the story, Steve.  Same thing happened with my 15 year old daughter in our pool at home.  She has done one year of swimming, and begs to race me every time we swim because she beats me in a down and back (25 yards).  I can't get her to race me in a mile and a half swim, however.

Happy 4th to all!  Hope you are enjoying family and/or friend time and getting in an extra workout or two if it suits you.  39ish mile group ride this morning.  Very fun riding down Main Street...flags flying...minimal traffic.  Felt like our own parade!

Happy 4th of July!! I'm bbq'ing with friends. Got my 34 mile bike in this morning and pulled out a 16.7mph. So good for me. I decided to get out of the little ring and see what it would feel like to use the large ring. I was pretty surprised when I realized I could give the same effort and go faster. By the end I felt good, but cooked at the same time. So excited to see progress.

I read your story to my friend, Steve. She laughed. yeah for your fastest 100! My swim yesterday had moments with pain and moments without (in my shoulders) I have to take things slow and be super consistent in my stroke motion or it hurts. But I got in 2100yds.

Congrats on the first 50 miler!

I managed to overcome my total lack of motivation, and put in a 35 mile ride. It was *hot* outside, and I stopped at a store to get a couple extra bottles of water as I was sweating like crazy. Shorts were covered in salt when I was done. Averaged 20 MPH on the ride, so that was a big positive. LOVE the new wheels.

"Need your input" department: Todays problem --- I just have struggled with motiviation since my HIM. I'm thinking I put so much focus and effort into that race 2.5 weeks ago, and not having much else planned for the year, that once it passed, I've been left sort of hanging with no real plan, and generally confused. I need to refocus, and realize I still have a few months of outdoor time left, and I best use it when I can. Not so easy to do, though.  Anyone have suggestions?

My other HIM race in August may be  no-go as well. Turns out that our oldest daughter is going to camp that weekend for a week, and I'm needed to be at home to help pack/transport, etc. I may look for a race in early September to takes its place.

Elena, wooohooo on breaking 50!  Love to read of your biking progress.

Very nice ride Samantha!  Yes, you certainly did find the big ring .

Steve, good job on the long swim.  Great to hear your city has a pool now!

Larry, consistent as always!  Glad you had a good 4th!

Mike, I don't know if anyone but you can answer the motivation question.  What makes you smile just thinking about doing it?  Is it just riding your bike for the simple joy of it?  Is it participating in some masters swim meets?  Is it taking up trail running? Is it having a big goal like a HIM or IM?  Is it racing more frequently doing  sprints and OLY's? Is it rock climbing or kayaking, or ??  There are no have to's in this really.  So my thought would be to give yourself permission to just do whatever "it" is, and know that it's OK for "it" to change over time.

Mike, triathlon is a lifestyle puncuated by races here and there.  It is a lifestyle of fitness and setting some goals and accomplishing them.  You have gone from working out a lot to working out less.  Your body is sucking you back to he couch atm.  You have a marathon in October, but your training does not reflect marathon prep.  It is natural for your body and mind to be tired after your last race.  You have a big decision as to whether to make training fun again or go back to the way things were before you started doing triathlon or simply take a break and swim with the kids, splash around and just have fun for a few months and then refocus again whenever you feel like it.  You could be a master ping pong player.  Anyway take care of you, do some sole searching and take care of your wife while you think things through.

Your post was good to read steve. Made me think about what I've been doing, and I realized today is the 2nd anniversary of my coming to BT. I went back to look at what I posted that first day, and I've cut & pasted it below. It made me think hard about where I was, what I wanted to do, and where I am now.  For me, its a great shot of perspective on my motivation. When I wrote what is below 2 years ago, I never thought I'd be where I am now, in all the good ways. Ride a bike 50+ miles? Run that much (but should be more)? Swim 1.2 miles in a race, and think it wasn't too big a deal? Unthinkable.

Going back to the beginning and seeing why I was doing this seems to have recentered my thinking. I did my first tri just 12 weeks after I posted this. I look back on the "20 minutes/1.35 miles" workout and think of the effort it took to take just that first freakin' step. It was a start down a path to being a better me, to changing how I was, and in some ways who I was. Seems kind of silly, but by re-reading this entry, I've given myself the enthusiasm I need to get moving and get back at it.

20m1.35 miles-----

Day 1 of C25K. 20 min of 1/1:30 for 20 minutes. Went fine

The BEGINNING!!!  After having competed in my first tri last week (6/27 Cohasset, MA Sprint) as part of a relay - I biked - , I've decided I want to do this myself next year or sooner - and a few other races as well!!

I'm starting from near scratch - a former athlete now looking to get back into shape after too many years of sitting behind a desk, being inactive, and getting badly out of shape.

The good news is that I started exercising regularly back in March, and have shed nearly 30 pounds so far.

Goals for the first 2 months are to complete a C25K, and get swimming. i've never been a swimmer, but my wife is a former competitive swimmer and will be serving as my coach . I'll likely lay off biking for a bit as I build a foundation on the run/swim side of things.

Not thinking about any races at the moment other than the Cohasset Tri in June 2011. depending on progress, I'll see what available as things move forward.

I did an 18 mile run yesterday! I was lucky, it stayed overcast throughout most of the run. I was pretty shot by the end though and a big grumpy bear last night! This was my last long "long" run. I will probably get in a couple more 8-12 milers in the next 2 weeks.

Mike - I like your thoughts. Reading your initial post was fun. And I definitely agree with what Steve said. I typed you a message earlier on my phone and accidentally deleted the whole thing. I was frustrated, so will have to write more later. But you have so much to be proud of and so many places you can go!

Jim - Great job on the longest long!

Larry - just didn't want to leave you out

I had a pretty rough run today. You might say it was much more like a walk. It was my longest distance run and I may be using excuses, but there were circumstances and hopefully I learned my lesson. I was up too late last night. I didn't not drink enough water pre-run. I ate too big of a lunch too close to run time. And yesterday was my long bike, so coming in my legs were feeling it. It was the hottest day we have had that I have run in and one other factor that is hard to explain. So I did 7.5 in 1:42 (13 mpm) yikes! Bummed? Yes! At least I got the distance in. Running is so hard some days for me and I really hope it keeps getting better and as I go longer this does not become the norm.

Carol - Great job on 4th of JULy workouts!

Don't knock yourself too hard Samantha.  I've had days where it's just not going to be a great time or pace.  I've learned in the past few months to accept them, although it is difficult for me as well.

Today I did 18.9 miles in an hour on the bike.  Close to my fastest time ever.  Now that I am not trying to lose a ton of weight (instead of 4 pounds a week, just one) my training is improved and I feel like I am truly in shape.  I am trying to mentally get in place how to train after July 15th so I don't revert back to being a sloth.  I decided to focus on running till December 1st, when there is a half marathon 30 minutes from my house.  My goal is 2 hours.  Then I will focus on swimming, trying to get 4 days a week in (I have access to a coach after my daughter finishes her high school practices).  I plan on biking 2 days a week during this whole time.  If I am healthy, at the end of January I will begin a build for an ironman distance event that is at the beginning of September.  My goal for that will be to finish it.  I would like to do more from August through November, but I literally work 40 hours a week, and spend 40 hours a week coaching football.

Its now officially a family affair -- as of 10 minutes ago, my 9 year old daughter is registered for her first tri!  I received an email from USAT, and they mentioned the race. I asked her if she had any interest, and she said "Yeah!!!"  She is excited!

There is a kids tri on July 22 at MIT. For her age group, the course is 100 yd swim, 3 mile bike, 0.5 mile run. All on the MIT campus on closed roads. Now just hoping for good weather. Can't wait to see her do this!

Mike good job refocusing.

Samantha, we all have those days.  My workout today was 35 mile bike and then 11 mile run.  It was 90F and windy for the run, drank 7x the amount of water used on Tuesday's 10 mile run.  I was dragging at 9 mpm the whole way.  It was a just get it done run for today.  Yesterday's swim... the last 1500 yards was mostly 50 yards at a time on a slower and slower pace to the end.  Was just needing to get it done.  Some days are low fatigue some are high fatigue.  The goal is just to get through the workout or call it bacause you are too smoked.  Glad you got the workout done, walking is fine.

I have a 14 year old and 10 year old doing first tris this summer.

Just back from a 5.25 mile run along the ocean. Just gorgeous to see the sunrise over the water, the lighthouse, beach, etc. Made me realize how fortunate I am to be able to be out there and be active. And also how all those folks who are still sleeping are missing all this beautiful day. Was really good to get myself moving, and thanks to all of you here. This is a great group!!

I need to take a picture next time I'm out so you can see how amazing it looks out here at times early AM.

I did an hour swim this morning and covered 2650 yards.  It wasn't a great swim, but I am happy I covered that I was able to swim an extra 500 yards more than my race distance.  This is my last long swim.  8 days to go!!

Great job Larry! Now your body will start recovering and on race day you will be so strong!

Mike- I'm truly jealous that you live by the ocean, so please do post a pic so I can imagine myself running there too! Great job getting up and out early! I love the quiet of early.

Super exciting to hear about your kids getting involved! Maybe they will keep it up and become world champs- this could be the beginning of their eyes opening to a strength they were created with! And just think, you are the parents who have chosen to live life differently and that is inspiring them forward! I love knowing parents who are invested in their children. Let's us know how they do in their races!

Swim and bike for me today.

37 mile bike with friends today on some beautiful trails and park roads.  Had a great time.  Should have been working, but glad I wasn't!
