Veteran 253 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Good job on your race Bill, & you've got to start somewhere which getting up & training, so you now have something to build on. Jace-sorry your race didn't go as planned, but it's a good learning experience, & you now know what you can't/shouldn't do at your next race! Good race Dwayne! Carla, way to go for it & sign up for IM Boulder! I hope your injuries are getting better! On the way back from WI, my husband asked if I was going to do an IM next year (he said the training hadn't been too bad of an inconvience for him!). I told him I'd have to get through one 1st, but I could see doing it again, but would like to take a year off, so maybe IM Boulder 2015? Kathleen, are you going to sign up for next year? |

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Originally posted by rquinn23 Originally posted by RunningJoke Becky, I really liked your blog post this week about mental attitude. My training buddy has been so down on herself and her performances over the past 9 months, and I really feel like mental strength and resilience is totally underrated. Bad luck, illness, corneal abrasions all happen and somehow we have to keep ourselves motivated and on track and HAVING FUN which is really what this is all about. Does anyone have any books or resources for "mental strength training" that they've found useful? Doh--I had meant to add HAVING FUN to the list of positive mental notes to remember! I have read many times over from people who have completed an IM to remember to HAVE FUN during the race, and to smile. I have to remember that, because in most races when I think I'm smiling (at a camera or friends/family) it looks like a grimace of pain! So I have to work on the smiling part. And I definitely think mental strength and resilience is just as important as the physical part of endurance events! And it must be trained, just like our bodies do. I have a question for everyone on pre-race nutrition for an IM. I think I have my nutrition plan fairly set for during the race--probably some tweaking left to do, but I've used the race-provided food and drink for my long rides/runs, and so far no stomach issues, and as long as I get in enough of it early, I've had no energy or bonking issues. However, I am not sure what to eat the day before and the morning of. For my past HIMs (of which I've only done 2), I ate two rice cakes with peanut butter and banana, plus some Gatorade, water, and then a Gatorade PRE 100 calorie drink pouch just before the swim. I'm thinking chicken and rice for a late lunch/early dinner the day before, and maybe a small smoothie before bed. But I'll be in a hotel, so I'm worried about finding a place to get the proper food. Yep, having fun is a big part of why we do this (I hope ) As far as pre-race nutrition, the days leading up to the race I just try to stay on a normal diet for me. I might cut some of the calories back simply because exercise volume is down. The day before, or even some 2 days before I might increase the carb percentage. The other thing I do right up to race time is sip G2 to get the fluids with some electrolytes without the calories. Race morning, I try to get 2 servings of oatmeal with a little granola and almond milk, plus a bagel with butter or jelly. I know people that get up during the night to get in an ensure but I have never tried that. Fine line between starting with the tank full enough, without going too far and starting out a bit lethargic trying to digest a full stomach. |

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Originally posted by bdenehy Great racing Dwayne! It's good to read all the fine training you are all doing. I finally broke a several week slump of sleeping in after bad nights' of sleep and got in some short bike/swim this AM. One day doesn't make a streak, but its a start. I also went back to lookup results from the last sprint. while the overall time was disappointing, I had a solid bike (for me), a very good run (second overall, behind the 20 something speedster who won) and had a good time. Happy training all! Great job Bill! A couple of friends went over and did a lap of the Peasantman course last week. They said the route isn't too bad, probably wouldn't think of wanting the RD's head on a spit until at least the 3rd lap or possibly even the 4th. Which is good for you, bad for me! There is some climbing, but some nice downhill too. Roads in good shape. |

I learned good things from it myself! I'll have to bookmark this one. Thanks! I don't tend to change anything in the days before a race and eat a reasonable breakfast the morning of (maybe a banana, eggos with peanut butter, coffee (always), and some fruit snacks in the car on the way over. One thing I try to do the night before a race of any distance is have a large dose of Metamucil with an extra glass of water on the side. This may be Too-Much-Information, but I don't want to rely on what facilities may or may not be available at the race site, and try to make sure I take care of certain business before leaving the house/hotel. |

My father-in law-law passed away, then my husband got laid off work, then the HIM (Orangeman) I was training for cancelled due to low turn-out, and then I wiped out on my bike in the rain. I only strained my adductors, so not as bad as it could be. Anyway, I just wanted to give a quick update as to why I have been absent. I hope everyone has had great training sessions and even better races. I have not read any of the treads so I am way behind on everything. Good Luck and have fun to everyone! |

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Short easy effort brick for me this morning (only a brick so I don't have to do anything later today). This afternoon I am going to get a massage, looking forward to that sort of. I am going to get into a routine of regular massages as part of the plan going forward to IMFL to keep the ITB and the other issues it causes at bay. But the deep tissue massages, especially the first one, tend to be a bit painful. What is everyone else up to? |

But the deep tissue massages, especially the first one, tend to be a bit painful. What is everyone else up to? Unplanned rest day yesterday--was supposed to have a short brick (45/30), but it was raining, and the cycling group that got me into cycling a few years ago held an impromptu birthday party at a Mexican restaurant for the ride leader, since their ride was cancelled due to rain. So although it meant I didn't burn any calories and consumed more than I should, I had a great time catching up with some cycling and triathlon buddies who I haven't seen in a while. So all was good! This morning I had the opportunity to do an open water swim. There is a woman in the area who lives on a lake and invites a select group of folks to swim from her dock on mornings when she's available. I finagled my way onto the invite list--it's supposed to be 1.2 miles to get across the lake and back. Let me tell you, I have no open water swimming fears, except for alligators. I know they rarely attack humans (though one did attack a teenager last week in this area), and that these women swim 5-6 days a week without incident, but I found myself all alone in the middle of this lake and really tried to hold my imagination in check! The swimming was awesome, the fear of the alligator popping up a few yards away was not...Alas, I made it, without incident, a total of 2645 yards. I was alone for a while because some of the women turn around half way and the others stopped to chat with some other swimmers. I will definitely go back once or twice before my race, and hopefully will do 2 full crossings to get 2.4 miles in. Sorry to hear about your troubles, Rita. Hopefully you can get focused and get back on track. |

Member 258 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed So, I am having a great (first) week of HIM training! Enjoying that pleasantly sore feeling in all of my muscles, sleeping great, weather is cooling off. And the race is still far enough off in the future that I have minimal anxiety about it. I did find out that my corneal abrasion last week was actually caused by the anti-fog spray I used on my goggles. I had used it several times as directed with no problems, but this time the left goggle leaked a bit and allowed some of the residue to be washed into my eye. I did some research and found out there are multiple reports of similar injuries. My eye is healing well but I would not wish this on anyone, and I can't understand how they can allow a product like this on the market. It will be spit for me in the future! Jaime |

Master 1539 Sin City | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Originally posted by kenj What is everyone else up to? Cycling...what else? Actually, I am working on the rest of the season. After volunteering at the Las Vegas Tri Club sprint race, it sparked a bit of fire in me to do some triathlons this year. I still have two big rides (Park to Park on Tandem and Pedal to the Medal, which I want to try to get under an hour to get to the top). I'm working on doing a schedule that won't break me or break the bank. I could use some advice! Las Vegas Tri Club Sprint - Bike Relay (12 miles) 9/15 Las Vegas Triathlon Sprint - Bike Relay 9/22 Park To Park Pedal - Tandem 60 miles 10/12 Pumpkinman HIM - Bike Relay - 10/19, IF I cannot get a runner, then I may drop down to Olympic, and do B/R - The bike course in this one is a B!tch!! IronGirl Sprint or Oly - 10/26 BIGGIE - HITS Lake Havasu HIM (FIRST HIM) - 11/9 (you got that right! I'm *highly* thinking about it....I'm more worried about the run) My concern that it seems a bit "much", but in reality, I'm only doing one "full" triathlon, while the others are bike relay. I can do a "brick" for a couple of these. I may just do IronGirl Sprint instead of Oly because it's pretty close to the Lake Havasu HIM. Another option is to do HITS Palm Springs, which is in December, and that gives me an extra month. Palm Springs is a bit further away from LV. Bike course is flatter (667 ft elevation vs 750 for Lake Havasu, and LH has two steep climbs and flat for the rest. PS has rolling hills). Seems like the avg bike is 3:10-:15 range....that's 17ish mph for Palm Springs. I have to decide very soon before the prices go up in August on exactly what I'm going to do. What would you do if you were in my shoes? Some info: I'm NOT looking to be fast/speedwork etc, but I don't want to "just survive". I do have somewhat a time in mind, but it'll be a conservative goal. My swim sucks, and I really do not like to swim that much in training...Racing, I have no problems. So I'm not looking to be fast here, but at the same time, I don't want "to just survive"....just to swim smart, that's all. I have done two half-marys, and I feel like I'm a little bit faster, not much, this year even though I haven't really run much lately. Bike - ptth, no problems there. :D Can I get away with this weekly schedule? 2x Swims, 3-4x Bike, 3-4x Run (2 short, 1 mod, 1 long - nothing specific, just run by time or miles). Thanks for any help! |

I just have a second to check in and will go back and catch up tomorrow. My tri on Saturday turned into a du when the swim was replaced with a 2 mile run. It was rather fun to do something different! I will try to get a race report done tomorrow.I do have a question. I was talking to my niece this morning. She started running earlier in the year and is very excited about it and sounds like she is really enjoying it. She is even signed up to do the run leg of a triathlon in September. Anyway, she was asked me about nutrition. I shared with her some of what I do, but was wondering if anyone had any articles or books they have relied on that I could recommend to her. I think she would be interested in general information and information specific to nutrition during events. Any suggestions??Karen Glad you enjoyed the DU Karen!! I look forward to hearing more about it.For your niece, is she looking for race nutrition and for how long of a race? I see a lot of people that take on more than they need for the distance. Great though that she is interested in running!! My niece is ultimately training for a full marathon in October. She has a HM in August and she is doing the running leg of an Oly tri in September. I think she would be interested in any nutrition info - for racing and just general info. My race last Saturday turned out to be a lot of fun. My husband and I got to the park where the race started and I looked at the river and thought it looked really high and fast, but didn't really think anything of it. I went and registered and took my stuff to my transition area. I thought it was odd that I didn't have a swim cap with my stuff, but rationalized it because it was a really small race and thought maybe they didn't want the expense. I got my stuff all set up and took my bag back to the car. As I was coming back, I glanced at the registration table and saw a small piece of paper that said NO SWIM. After that they did make an announcement that the swim was cancelled because of the river conditions, and they were adding an extra run. Therefore, my first duathlon! It was run 2 miles, bike 10 miles, run 3 miles. The first run was flat and through town, the bike was VERY hilly, and the second run was up on the Rails to Trails trail. It was kinda fun doing something a little different. My time was 1:26. After I learned about the change in format, I had targeted 1:30, so I was pretty happy! We have been having another heat wave here with ridiculous humidity. I made the perhaps stupid choice to run after work last night. I am not sure now if it is good or bad that I didn't check the Weather Channel first. When I started out, it was a little overcast, so it didn't feel too bad without the sun beating down on me. Unfortunately after about 2 miles the sun came back out and it was awful. I turned around and headed back home, just doing a little over 4 miles. I must say though, that there was a very nice woman that I didn't know getting out of her car as I ran past. She yelled out to me and asked if I needed more water. That was the nicest thing that anyone had said to me all day!! She refilled my water bottle for me and I shuffled the rest of the way home. When I got home, I did check the Weather Channel. It was 93 degrees, and with the humidity it felt like 102 degrees. The weather here is supposed to break over the weekend and we are to be cooler next week. I hope everyone is being careful out in the heat!! Good luck to those racing this weekend and to those putting in long hours training!! Karen |

Veteran 253 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Adam--Have a great trip!! Rita--Sorry about your FIL & crash. Heal up and I hope things look up soon! Karen--Good job on your race & I here you about the humidity! We've had the same weather here, I'm not a fan!! Um...alligators and sharks?!?! You guys are braver than I!! I'm sure it's all relative to what you're exposed to, but I don't think I could do it! There's a reason I choose IMWI (no sharks or alligators)! DJ--I think you should sign up for the HIM! You could totally do it. So yesterday my bike ride was all about wildlife. I went out about 6am, & came across a deer, a gaggle of hissing geese & a bunch of baby bunnies all within the 1st 2 miles, even though I was in town. Then as I was finished & heading to my car, I went over a pedestrian bridge & have to make a sharp right turn. Well I was going slow & spacing off a bit & cut the corner. Only problem was the ground was washed out & my front wheel goes into the foot drop off. There was nothing I could do & I'm pretty sure my face hit a dead bird I saw at the last minute (at 1st I thought it was dog poop, so yes, it could have been worse!). I'm fine & my bike is fine too. Just a silly mistake!! Redeamed myself with an 80mile ride followed by a 30 min run. Hot & humid!! Headed to the pool in a few to cool off!! Hope everyone is having a great Saturday!! |

That stinks that you had a spill at the end of your ride, but great job on your brick! I just signed up for Ironman Florida 70.3. They moved it to April next year, probably to try to beat some of the heat from this year. Price is "only" $199 through today--anyone else? Ken? Price goes up another $26 through mid August, then up again through February. |
