Got my Sunday off to a blustery start this am with my first official training session! I've been swimming 3 times a week since January and added in biking and walk/jog intervals at the beginning of February but today is the first day following a specific tri plan.

Since outside is not an option, I headed to a friend's gym. I did: walk 4' run 1.5'-18 mins, .9 miles, then a short bike ride, 14' 2.8 miles. Not anything major, but I was definitely feeling the burn. 2/7 for the week.

This cold weather has me dreaming of hibernation, so I'm happy I managed to get my butt out of bed this morning. Having someone else expecting me really helps my accountability, and it's nice to laugh with a friend as well. I love the isolation of swimming but I'm finding it's nice to commiserate with someone else when the incline is killing me on the dreadmill.

I'm down for the fruit/veggie challenge! I'm at 3/15 for the week (assuming we start challenges on Sunday?) with a banana, bell peppers, and spinach.

Stay warm!!

Mel - Congrats on your first "official" triathlon workout! Which plan are you going to follow? When if your first race?

As far as the challenges go - they usually start on Monday. However, since you're already off to a great start - don't let that stop you!

Gretchen, I think for the jumps you are supposed to kep pedaling without straightening your knee so it basically is more of a challenge/isolates your legs more. Personally I don't really like them. The instructor I go to never explains them so most likely most people are not doing them correctly. That's how people get hurt.

This weather has completely zapped my motivation. All I want to do is curl up inside (it is currently 6 degrees outside but feels like -24...no joke). I have Some CLPs to catch up on...

Hey Nicole - You and me both. I was going to head to the pool for a swim today but I never made it out of my driveway (which is a big hill) despite shovelling for 2 hours. We got another 16 inches last night!

I'm gonna try again tomorrow but let's hold each other accountable this week. How about a Dave/Browns vs. Nicole/Ravens mini - challenge (that should get me fired up). I vow to get six workouts in between Monday and next Sunday. If I don't, I'll change my BT photo to the Raven's mascot. If you fall short of your goal - you would have to change your pic to the Browns logo? INterested?

Also - would you please consider changing your BT settings so I can see your log. I've been trying to leave you an inspire but I don't have permission.

Good to know, I'll start tomorrow. Call today a trial run!

I'm using the custom function since I have a strange schedule at the moment, and my sprint tri is the Columbia, MD Iron Girl on August 16th, so I have a nice long time to get my running up to speed with my laps.

Dave - I think 'can't get out of the house because of another foot and a half of snow' is ok. I missed any working out today because the Y was closed and all classes cancelled. So all total only 2 bikes and one swim for me this week, not too good for the challenge, but with the snowstorms and the resulting losing the Y not once but twice in 7 days... You do what you can do, this winter is brutal! The only advantage I have is that the weather is making me more motivated than less - the thought of biking and running outside again has me all fired up! That might not happen until May at this point, but whatever...

Mel - you're well on your way for sure. I suspect sometime around June you'll be looking for another race and making Iron Girl your 'A' race

Gretchen - 2 hour spin! Is there anything you can't do? seriously...

David - another one doing a sprint indoors just for the heck of it. Well done!

Oh and a big +1 to 5th on brewing great beers from extract. Northern Brewer's extract kits might not be cheap, but they come out delicious. Actually the only beers I've had this weekend have been from NB extract kits - my Festivus Miracle holiday ale, and my neighbor's coffee porter (amazing on nitro - like a beer latte) and his Heady Topper clone.

The weather and I decided that today was a day off. Not from beer though...here was my treat for the night:

Einstok Olgerd - Icelandic White Ale
Followed by
Funk Brewery - Efflorescence Saison Farmhouse Ale (Gotta support your local breweries)

The family and I went out to dinner so I didn't really watch what I was eating except while putting it into my mouth. Back on the calorie and working out wagon tomorrow.

6/? This week with a short spin this evening on the trainer. I'll start tracking fruit/veg tomorrow. I have fruit & veg smoothies everyday so hopefully I meet it!!

Hoping to get to the LBS for some aerobars this week. ??
My sis-in-law is trying to talk me into carbon but I just bought new handlebars (narrower non-carbon) so they'd have to be clip-on ones. Hmmmm. Any comments/suggestions? My LBS may take back the new bars and put the $ toward a whole new carbon setup. No, I wouldn't be getting crazy expensive ones, more in the neighborhood of $300.

Hey New Englanders--some of your snow problems are starting to back up into the Midwest. Can you get a handle on that?!?!? We are forecasted for 10", which I know seems like nothing to some, but down here in my neck of the woods, it grinds everything to a halt. Campus closed today, so no planned swim workout--grrrrr. Did 35 min on the trainer (59/400) this morning while watching it snow.

Just found out the date for the "Rec Your Body Tri" at our campus rec center--2/28. I'm stoked! It is just a little indoor tri (10 min swim, 20 min bike, 15 min run) that is actually shorter than most of my own workouts, but this is the first year where I will be in town for it, so I'm in (provided my wife says it is okay, it is on her birthday)! Not sure how it is going to work, as it overlaps with the Cycle120 class that I've been going to on Saturdays and in the past they have used the spin bikes. We'll see!

Hope everyone is staying warm and safe while having great training sessions.

Oh it's on! And this is much needed since it is supposed to be below freezing here all week long! I also vow to get in at least 6 workouts by Sunday or I will change my picture to a Browns picture!

I also don't often keep up with the workout log on BT, but I should! I will try to start that again this week, and will give you permission once I figure it out, haha.

We are looking at a nice little snow storm tonight as well. It may keep me from playing volleyball this evening, but thanks to my challenge with Dave, I will be doing a workout in my living room after work :-) I think a HIIT workout followed by some pilates should be good. The rest of this week will depend on the snow/cold as well, but at least I will have my living room to get my sweat on. I also bought a kettlebell yesterday (finally), so I'm excited to try that out.

As for shirts, I think my vote is going to be for version 6 and version 2 (with a little alteration on the font).

DQ, thanks for putting that spotify playlist together!

Happy Monday everyone. For those of you in warm weather, I am quite envious right now. I was feeling like spring was just around the corner, but this week has me feeling like winter will never end. Send me warm thoughts, please, and some Vitamin D!

Thanks for that info on the jumps--I've been straightening my leg and it really slows down my cadence and yes, they kinda hurt my knees that way too. Gonna try them with bent knees next class (next week, after travel).

Shirt vote Versions 5 then 6.

Workouts have been good but not great. Had 2 runs & 2 swims last week. I really should have got on the trainer in the evening but just couldn’t get motivated. However, one run was great for me with a 5 km and made a PB with bit over 37 min to run at 7m 22s/km. I have been running by heart rate and I am finally starting to see some improvements in speed! For anyone starting this process it is slow, very slow. Started last summer running this way and it was almost 6 months before I could run for 20 min straight (I was run walk before that). I am now up to running close to 40 min straight and keeping in my zone.

My advice for anyone starting a heart rate zone training program is to have patience. Also I am only doing this for running. Swim and bike I am using a combination of long & slow and intervals. My primary reason for HR Zone training on the run was to avoid injury (dreaded Plantar Fasciitis). So far so good! My feet are feeling good and for the first time in my life I am able to run 5 km at least weekly (been doing that since beginning of Jan) I try to get in one 3 km and one 5 km each week. Running is my weakest of the tri sports.

On to another week with a 3 km run before work this morning @ 7m 09s/km. Getting closer to breaking the 7 m/km mark!

Also - Gretchen, do you have clipless shoes that work on the spin bikes? I destroyed my knee using sneakers and the jumps put a lot of pressure on your leg - bending your foot then causing your knee to go in directions it's not supposed to. I'm still paying for it. Definitely need a stiff shoe for spinning.

I do use clipless cycling shoes on the spin bikes. I figure I want to mimic real riding as closely as possible. Thanks!

My wife is a spin instructor. jumps are hard on your knees. Depending on which spin certification you have, they generally frown upon them now. For me, spin class is about my training. I rarely get off my seat. Hills and all, I am on the seat. In the end do what works for you.

Funny article I read today: a glass of red wine a day provides same health benefits as 1 hour of aerobic exercise. Does this apply for beer as well? What is you train for 1h and then drink a glass of red wine??

Sorry to hear that snow is becoming a hassle for you... I was just reading an article which said that in the last 25 days, Boston has received more snow than Chicago has ever had in one winter. I'm not proud - I'm just saying it could be worse.

I hope you are able to work something out with your wife so you can do the Rec Your Body Tri. With all the hard work you have been doing - it would be a sin not to. If your wife is anything like mine - she should be thrilled that you're doing what you need to do to stay healthy... Or at least that's what I tell myself when I miss mother's day every year for the season opener triathlon.

Keep at it!
