Originally posted by firebert Congrats Mark and Kate on the races this weekend!! Thanks all for the support on the injury. I've been largely injury free for a year and a half at least, something had to give - lol. It's sloooowwwly getting better this week - lots of icing and stretching (sounding like the trainers in HS). I really hope to be able to run Sunday and not have to walk! But Dave thank you for the offer to walk with me - that means a ton and the thought of BDASers sticking together instead of racing for themselves has that warm fuzzy feeling to go with it. BTW - the Season Opener - I am IN for the Duathlon. Just need to register. And get my bike to the shop for repair. I think I know what it needs but it's clear, since it's sat all winter in the same condition, that someone else is going to need to diagnose and fix the indexing that I'm unable to get right on my own. Also - there's an indoor traithlon at the YMCA in Franklin on April 24th I'm considering. It's only $40 which is potentially the cheapest tri I've ever seen. I guess indoor requires much fewer workers etc. I believe it's 15 min/ 25 min/ 20 min? 15 minutes straight is a long swim for me at this point (lol) but in a swim lane I can worry a lot less.

These are fun and a great intro to "racing" a tri without the stress of the open water swim, equipment, etc. etc.  I did one back in 2007 and only got through about 350 yards in 10 minutes - I could probably do double that now (so it is possible to improve!).  One thing I found crazy was that my lane mate DNF'd the swim - I mean, you can just hang on the wall for the remaining time, right?  At least I had the whole lane to myself as I flailed around helplessly.  :-)

I think Gretchen just did one of these, right?

Yeah, Gretchen just did one (same one as last year right Gretchen?). It would be the real season opener for me, as it's a month before the 'New England Season Opener'. It's attractive both to not worry about equipment, and to not worry so much about swim fitness. Just do what I can do.

Yep! I just did an indoor Tri a couple of weeks ago. I love them!! Super fast paced and you can go all out in every discipline.

Day #2 of HIM training
2000yd swim in the morning
30/15min bike/run brick. It is gorgeous outside today, so that ride was outside!! Hoping to get another outdoor ride in tomorrow.

I just did the USAT survey too this past weekend and my free pair of sunglasses are on the way! I did spring for some alternate lenses to pop in at $12.50 so now I have yellowy/clear ones for dawn/dusk rides and dark lenses for day. Just waiting for them to come! I have a small head though so I'll be curious to see if they'll fit my face. Worse case my son will have a very cool looking pair of sunglasses that I didn't have to pay for..

Jenn - I have a notoriously small head as well, and usually have a hard time with sunglasses looking huge on me. These fit me great! The nosepiece is adjustable. Mess with it for a few minutes and you'll have a great fit.

Day #3 of HIM training and I'm already falling behind! Was scheduled for a swim plus 45 min Z2 bike ride. Hit the bike plus yoga and strength training (#104 & 105/400). I decided to reschedule the swim from today until tomorrow. Somehow, I think I managed to sprain my left middle finger (insert your joke here). I have no idea what I did, but anytime I put any pressure on the palmer surface of the finger, especially down by the palm, it hurts pretty badly. So, I didn't think swimming was going to be a great activity, given that there is a lot of hand pressure and I didn't want to do closed fist drills all day.

Hoping to hit the pool tomorrow with better hand feeling. If not, I may have to *gasp* go to the doctor!

Oh! I bought a mio link HRM and returned the garmin strap and HRM that I never could get to pair. Mio is an optical HRM that you wear on your wrist. DCRainmaker has a lot of good things to say about it. I've only used it for one ride this morning, but it seems pretty good. I certainly won't miss the chest strap!

Oh no!!!    Don't do that!!!  He/she might tell you to stop swimming!!!  My PCP and I have an arrangement that every visit is predicated on the assumption that I'm going to keep training in some fashion, so "doc, figure it out!!".  Hope it feels better...those mystery injuries are always tough to deal with.

As for the wrist strap, you're going to love it.  I have the Scosche Rhythm+ (if I spelled that right it's a miracle - and this was also at the recommendation of Ray) and it's awesome.

Had a tough gym workout this morning and plan to go on a run this evening either before or after I give a swim lesson. Have another tough workout tomorrow morning (this is my last week of the unlimited sessions of that gym I was telling you guys about, so I'm trying to get as much out of it as I can), and will likely swim some laps tomorrow after my lessons.

I am going car shopping on Friday. I've never actually bought a car by myself before. My parents came with me to buy my first car and they bought me my second car as a graduation present (along with a $12,000 loan to pay off...unfortunately I'm not THAT spoiled). I know this is not tri related, but I was wondering if anyone leases their car, and if so why they prefer it that way? Gretchen, I know you just went through car shopping so I'm hoping you may have some tips fresh in your brain for me If anyone else has tips, please let me know!

Nicole - I've always bought cars, either new or used (like 12 of them !!!), until my current one which I'm leasing. I'd always stayed away from it mostly because I'd be going over mileage, but also out of fears I'd have to pay too much for dings and what not at the end of the lease. I've solved the mileage issue - I put less than 1k/month on now, and my lease (highest mileage option) allows for 15k/year. So in theory i'll come in under mileage. I'm only a few months in and so have no idea what to expect at the end of 3 years just yet, but so far having a smaller payment on a new car and having the promise of another new one in 3 years is very nice!

Leasing, just like financing, is another thing that banks have cooked up in their favor to get the most $$ out of you Here's my understanding of how it works - you're making financed loan payments on the depreciation of the car's value for the life of the lease. This is why it's cheaper. The more residual value the car you lease is expected to have at the end of it, the lower your payments will be.

Mine for example is a 30k car, I put 6k down (my trade in), and for 3 years at 15k miles per year plus a couple add ons from the dealership, my payments are like $300 a month. They're expecting it to be worth 16k in 3 years. If I bought the car instead even with the trade in I would have been over $500 a month.

All of the lease payments you see advertised by carmakers on TV - this is for some base model of car that the dealership won't ever carry, and for some ludicrously small mileage amount (I live and work in the same city and only use my car on weekends to run errands, or 'I'm an old lady'), and some financing that only a Bank CEO could get approved for. It's always going to be more than whatever they advertise, just to be prepared for that.

Best of luck and we want to see pics of whatever you end up in! I'm saving my 'new car pics' for when the bike rack is installed

So far so good Alan! I'm about halfway through the 2nd podcast and it's been awesome. I love 'personal history' stuff like that, where you get the view of someone who was actually there. Especially when it's about something we can all nerd out about - triathlon!

I'm glad you're enjoying it! And thanks to everyone else who has checked it out.

Oh- I love my arm HRM.

With your finger- tape it to the one next to it for swimming- that will let it heal up not having to deal with the pressure by itself. I would tape the middle to the ring finger.

I used to swim next to the butterfly guys on my USS team and unfortunately ended up with taped fingers a lot.

set a goal or sign up for a race!! That is what does it for me. I also have to follow a plan to take the thought out of it too much in the beginning.

Wednesday and Thursday for me were 60 minutes on the trainer followed by a 15-20 run outside - had to enjoy the 75+* weather!  This morning was a relatively short, but brutal trainer session where I hit a 30" PR @ 417 watts (virtual power - so take that with a grain or a teaspoon of salt ).  Lunch swim with my daughter, who has her Jr. Championships meet this weekend.

So awesome that I'm getting 30-second PRs, 'cause that's so useful in triathlon.  :-/

Why don't you try a bike race?

I've been toying with the idea...did a couple of 40K time trials last year (yeah, I know that's not really a bike race).  The whole crash thing gives me the willies to be honest.

We have time trials here every Thursday night at different area locales with different terrain features. Is there anything like that where you are? I plan to do some this summer; I've always been chicken to but I figure you've got to start somewhere. I may go on my road bike though because I will be embarrassed to show up on my superbike as a weak cyclist....compared to all those who actually race.

I am also doing the Be Iron Fit training plan for the full. So far is seems pretty good. I'm only in the base building phase; that finishes up in a couple of weeks then on to "build" phase.

My mystery shin pain seems to have resolved itself, though my vascular surgeon wants to run a vein scan to rule out DVT (I have CVI in both legs - compression socks rock!!!).

Hope everyone is having a great week - by beers of choice lately have been Birdhouse Pale Ale and Duckpin Pale Ale (both local Baltimore brews).

Not to worry, training will work that weight off. I'm about 5 over where I was last year for racing..I'm trying to be patient.

Did you have the scan yet? If so how did it go?

Okay, just trying to catch up with everyone!
I have been following everyone's posts this week but only from my phone and I don't always like posting from my phone, I can't quote people from it so I wait to get to a computer.

Good swim and hour run yesterday.

Today I had a bike/run brick - 45 min on the bike followed by a 15 min run. This is the workout I've missed the last 3 weeks so I'm glad I finally got it in. I'll admit I'm a bit disappointed in my bike today - I like to always be 85 rpm or higher when on my trainer regardless of gear. Today I averaged around 80 I think (I'd have to look it up). I know by the end I was pushing a bit bigger gear but sheesh I'm annoyed I didn't catch it. Actually there was one point where i had to jump off the bike for a second and I know my cadence dropped to nil before I paused my watch but it shouldn't have affected it that much I wouldn't think. I still have to get cadence on my watch....that would solve that.

On a HUGE positive note, I was looking at my training plan and got to thinking...I am running 1+ hour runs 3x's a week which is typically in excess of 6 miles and on the 1:15 days I get up to 8 miles....10k is the farthest I ran last year due to my knee! I'm doing it 3x's a week now! I'm telling you, the run/walk thing works and I am living proof. hahahahaha happy dance...now to keep it going and not annoy body parts on this journey..

Tomorrow I have another swim and an hour at 100+ rpm....let it rain! I've got The 100 on Netflix!

Oh, does anyone do the cycling training videos on Strava or do you do Sufferfest or ...I'm blanking on the other popular one. I'm thinking I should start doing something like this for more structure rather than catching up on Netflix...

There are a couple of beginner-type circuits around here - one is a weekly time trial series (like 10 miles maybe) and there is a weekly beginner crit race that's like an hour from here.  The time trials I've done are USAC-sanctioned races down on the Eastern Shore of Maryland - basically the same course as Eagleman 70.3 (pancake flat, hot, windy).  In those conditions equipment really matters, and I'm riding my aluminum road bike with clip-ons and box rims.  When your wheels are whistling from a cross-wind, you know it's windy.

If my schedule permits, I'll race them again this year.
