Leslie, that is an awesome pic!

I know you already did your race, I'm sure it went well even though you were feeling under trained - you have been working really hard all year

what did you decide on the wetsuit?

I didn't wear the wetsuit, although in hindsight wish I had've since almost everyone else had one on!  I will probably wear one next Saturday in a tri of similar distance.

I did manage to win the Athena group today, so that was nice!  It's very hot here in the greater Seattle area.  We are all melting from our sheer wimpiness and lack of air conditioning!!!  Luckily I was done racing by 10.

Edit: Here's my RR:  http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=128494&posts=2#M1607993

All of the discussion about how marathons screwed people up was, OK, not freaking me out (I'm actually pretty tough to freak out), but making me think about why I want to do a marathon now. But hey, the good thing about a December marathon is if I do take forever to recover, I can use that as an excuse to booze it up over the holidays.

Given a proper taper before the race and good 3 week reverse taper with solid nutrition (e.g. not just booze  ) afterwards you will be a-ok.  I picked CIM for two reasons, the course profile which is sweet and the ability to kick back a bit around the holidays.

You will be great on that course!

Hi, all! I'm back from Mexico -- what a *fantastic* trip. I was down there for a good friend's wedding and it was beautiful (plus, basically three days of non-stop partying). I managed to get in three decent runs around my tequila hangovers, so I feel good about that.

Beth! Happy very belated birthday!!

Leslie! Congrats on your win! I'm looking forward to reading the RR.

I'm checking in to let you all know I'm hanging in there - one week almost down - 2 more to go until things hopefully settle down into a new but 'normal' routine

keep sending me those positive manatee thoughts!

Hang in there, Beth!

I'm racing in the morning, what is probably my final tri of the summer unless I magically find another one (you know, I might)...but it's the final one on my agenda, making 6 for the season and 10 overall.  It's my home course, the bike route I ride all the time, so I am really hoping I can PR!!  I am wearing the wetsuit even though it's a short swim.  It is also the first repeat tri where I have numbers to compare any progress (or lack of) in the past year.

My little sister is also doing the race....she's borrowing just about everything, hasn't ridden a bike or swam in two years (and as of 7 PM still needs to run around to her friends' houses to pick up borrowed items) ....although she is a good runner--> if she beats me I will be very dejected!!!  My mom is here and is coming with me to cheer us both on.   Should be fun!

Thirded!! Awesome race, Leslie!

I picked up a nasty bug in Mexico and man is this thing lingering. I scrapped most of my runs last week and decided to just forget about it and start fresh this week (assuming the body's up for it). Quick question: Is it OK just to jump back into the plan without any sort of build up? I ran 17 miles the week of Aug. 10 with a "long" run of six miles (was supposed to run 23 that week); I ran six miles last week (supposed to run 22 miles). My plan calls for 29 miles this week, with a long run of 11 miles. If I'm healthy I feel like I can do that no problem, and I'm assuming that a week of almost no running won't be an issue. But should I scale back my runs this week, just to be safe?

This is all assuming, of course, that I can actually eat like a normal person this week. Ugh.

If you have been off almost a week and have not been eating well, I would scale back both distance and intensity.  I got food poisoning a couple of years ago, barely ate for four days, lost 6lbs and did not work out for a week.  It took me a while to recover my stamina.  Let your body guide you and don't force it.  You have lots of time to train before CIM.

After looking at Leslie's race report and her transition times (that she kind of complained about), I realized mine are pretty dismal.  What about providing a running list of your favorite tips and tricks for getting you off and biking or running?

To start, I have MTB shoes with ratchets vs. Velcro.  Is that a place to overhaul?

Me, complain?  You must be kidding.  Ha ha ha.  Heck, I'd complain if I was running 5 minute miles with 10 second transitions!

I don't have any special tips or tricks--as I am finishing one event I am mentally running through what I will do once I get to transition. I have velcro bike shoes which are fast--there are 3 straps on each but I only undo one.  I take my socks off and roll them so they roll onto my feet when the time comes.  I grab what I can to put on as I leave on the run, like visor, belt, etc.  Basically, I think having 2 little kids who never give me enough time makes me generally good at rushing and hurrying!!

Thanks, Suzy. That's good to hear. I'll definitely keep things super easy and plan routes that let me quit early if I need to. The long run isn't until Saturday, but I don't mind bumping it down a few miles if I need to. Sometimes it's hard to give myself a break!

Great idea! My transition times are always super slow, and I'm never quite sure why. Actually scratch that -- I think the main reason why is because I've never once practiced a transition. That seems to be the one piece of advice that I see over and over again, and it makes a lot of sense. Maybe we should have a Manatee Transition Day! We can pick a day that we're all going to get our transition stuff together and practice T1 and T2, like, 10 times each. We can even time ourselves and make it a competition. Hee!

On the more practical side, one thing that did help me in T2 was switching from regular laces to Yankz in my running shoes, and losing the socks for sprints. I shaved about a minute off of my last race this way (but I was still way too slow).

Erin,

I would definitely follow Suzy's advice on the re-entry to training, not only have you been off, but your body has been under stress from the 'bug'

hope you get back to feeling 100% soon!

Hi, Steve!!! Was thinking of you the other day ... sure have missed you.

Thanks...it's been a strange and difficult summer.  I've been training (but haven't logged hardly a thing) and raced in June and have another comming up in late Sept.  Going to concentrate on running for the fall as I have a half Mary in Oct and my first full Mary at Disney in Jan.

I am glad to be back in a better place and will be back with my favorite Manatee friends now.

up early and on the road and in the pool. my goal for september is 1500-1700 per session. i am liking the pool.
i went to my orthopedic surgeon on friday and surgery is the next course of action is-actually a meniscous transplant. only about a six month layoff. so i am trying to decide if and when i am going to have the surgery. i can walk and shuffle but to run the pain afterwords is becoming almost unbearable. but he said keep running if i can bear the pain.
i hope everyone is doing great, and that their training is going as well as possible.

wow, that's something else about your knee - sounds like it's really painful - my mom had a similar injury a couple of years ago, but I think they were able to just repair it, it didn't require a transplant

not that I'm a Dr or anything - in fact far from it, but it seems you might want to consider scheduling the surgery sometime in the next couple of months - that way you can recover and heal over the winter (maybe even get some good swimming in ) and then start light training in the spring and be ready for a couple of races late summer - early fall

continuing to train with the injury could possibly make it worse and cause an even longer recovery time

just my 2 cents fwiw
