OK, I made it through my first Olympic and I was very pleased with the results despite my somewhat limited training the past couple of months.  I told myself that I would be very happy with a time of 2 and a half hours and I ended up coming in over 5 minutes faster than that so no complaints at all.  I have my race report up so you will have to check it out.

I think this is going to be my last triathlon this season but will continue to train and hopefully enter a few running races as I prepare for my first half mary in february.   My wife has set that as a goal to get back into running shape since the baby and she is doing great.  She already logged 2 four mile runs last week...

I am not going anywhere but I wanted to thank everyone for their words of advice/encouragement the past 3 or 4 months.  I learned so much and feel that I have improved quite a bit as well.  And boy did we luck out on having such a great, inspirational mentor.

YHEA MARK AND YHEA MARK'S WIFE!!!!  2:25 for your first olympic - fantastic!  I am so jealous.  Congratulations that's awesome!!!!

Sweet Oly time there.

The outdoor pool in my town officially closed on Monday and with the ever shortening days, my schedule is gona be screwy.

Also, my boss "forgot" that I told him that I was going to my sister's wedding last week. And even though I will be making up all of the work and all of the hours as I have them all scheduled on my calender... he is spitting nails. Despite the fact that I am still adapting to returning to high altitude, I am anticipating a good run speed tonight. Some people are gifted in their skill at telling you how much of a screwup you are because they forgot what you told them.

Sigh. Meeting with him coming up in 10 min. It should be enjoyable.

I did my first set of sprint work during my run workout last night, and man are my legs hurting today!    I did an easy mile warm up, then 10sets of 30sec sprints with 45sec recovery; during which I alternated high knee and quick turn over with long stride and high kick in the back.  Then I ran the mile home faster than the warm up out.  OUCH!!!!  But a good OUCH!!  Do candy orange slices count as a recovery food after such a work out?

By the way Rob and Steve, this was your stupid idea so I am saying nasty things about you two every time I have to squat today.  If we ever get together I'll be fast enough to catch you and punish you.

Damn, now I'm going to have to start doing them again to get faster so I don't get a beating. Actually I am going to have to stop training for awhile. I have an affliction which will not let me go out in public. Yes it is the dreaded zit on the chin. I can't even hide it in my nose like Steve does. I should be able to get over the zit and accompanying trauma within about 6 weeks.

And now off to swim bike and ride.

Ever have those days where you just don't feel like working out?  I'm supposed to run today, got up and ready to go at 6:00 and then just couldn't walk out the door.  So now I've got the skipped workout guilt going on, which isn't so bad because I'm Catholic and we're used to guilt, but am trying to figure out how to get it in today.

On another note, anyone ever been to a wedding on a Wednesday?  Me niether, but I'm going to one today.  My brother and his fiance of two years decided last week that they'd get married today before they leave on vacation tomorrow - talk about random.

Yeah I definitely know about the guilt thing. I haven't trained properly for a little while now. I guess it must have been a mid year break I needed. Guilt?? I'm Catholic to so I'm used to it also. I was going to run this morning but didn't now I will have to do it when I finish work and in the hottest part of the day. The good thing is I can jump into the pool straight from the road. Just toss the shoes aside and I'm there.
I think because the end of the year is coming up for me I slacked off a bit. I just signed up for another triathlon in a few weeks so I again have a good incentive to get back out on the roads and in the swimming pool.

What does everyone do over the winter. Continue to train hard for next year. Just maintain your level for a while before kicking it up in the new year or maybe knock off for a bit and just do some minimal trainng for a month or so before starting back in. I'll be back into hockey very shortly after my last race.

I amlooking forward to joining the Tri club in Guelph to keep me going over the winter adn be ready for an OLY early next year.

When your body needs the break, take the break!!  Do you play basketball or rollerblade or something?  Maybe you could substitute a different workout and ease the guilt.

And a wednesday wedding is odd, was it a spur of the moment thing? Certainly doesn't sound like it will be a catholic ceremony.  I got married on a friday vs a saturday because the church was available that day.

I got 5.6 miles in at lunch, so I'm officially guilt free - at least in terms of my training plan.  My ice cream consumption is still way above the RDA, but that's one of the perks of 5-6 workouts/week right?

I'm not sure what the Wednesday wedding is all about.  They've been together for 5 years, engaged for 2 and have a 4 month old daughter and just decided last week that it had to be today.  They've never been the traditional type, but midweek?

Oh, and I'm the only one from my side of the family that is Catholic, post-marriage conversion.  My evangelical family is thrilled

I just went to my sister's wedding last Thursday. I guess it saved them like thousands of dollars, but it cost everyone who attended 4 work days instead of 1. So the net cost of the weekday wedding over the weekend wedding was 3x your daily income x the number of people who are attending who work or $25 x 8 x 3 x 100 = $60,000 (assuming average income of wedding is roughly $25 per hour). So to save $5000 on the wedding, it cost their guests $60,000 in lost income. You could throw a heck of a Saturday party with that $60k .....

It is the new thing to do to save money on weddings. I am sure that the hotel/ reception halls are loving making 10k on a wedding durring the week and booking their hotel rooms during low demand nights.

Anyway ya I hear you on the burnout thing a bit. I have not missed many workouts in the past 6 months. I would really hate to lose endurance over the winter and fear what would happen if I stopped workout out all together for more than a few days. I've had times when I had a break in an exercize routine in the past and then didn't get back into it for many months, or was that years....

As it is I am going to try to drive to a lake on Friday night get a swim in Friday, camp overnight, swim Saturday and then drive back. The temp is dropping to 30 at night now a days and that water temp can't be getting any warmer... Oh well we see how it goes.

You can just tell people that the zit is from grease on your face... SINCE YOU WORKOUT SO MUCH, and your face gets greasy!!

Probly a good idea to add in a double day off to get fully rested. If you are not recouperating enough between workouts you get a steady decline in umph. Or at least I do. At one point this summer I was going up stairs 1 at a time instead of alternating steps... it was time for some rest.

You are all wimps!  There is no such thing as BURNOUT!  SUCK IT UP BUTTERCUP!  Money mouth

Triathlete's don't get tired!  You are all being big frickin' babies!  Cry

Just teasin'--- Listen to your body... If you are tired take a break!  It is necessary!  OR FIND A WAY TO CROSS TRAIN... Hike, Mtn. Bike, Trail Run, etc....   If you are cross training you will tend to a have fun, and not think of it has "training" however, if you are tired....REST!

are you still seeing results?  It is tough to keep pushing yourself if you are plateauing on your long workouts.

What size is your current bike?  No reason, just wondering.

Tony, no additional advice on the workout question, but I did see a guy that looked just like your avatar on my run yesterday.  I actually thought, hey - here comes Tony.  You know, because there's no way they made two of those jerseys and helmets - sometimes my brain turns off while running.

Very nice bike. Wish I could afford one.

In another vein after my run yesterday aand conituing into today the back of my left knee is very tight and I can feel it pulling everytime I get up to walk. Any suggestions on relaxing this or streching it out. My calf and thigh muscles are just fine.

dumb question:  when counting swim strokes is a stroke considered a set with both arms or do you count each arm as a stroke?

ex.  left, right = 1 stroke or

     left = 1 stroke, right = 2 strokes, left = 3 strokes etc...

I would say each arm is a stroke, but I don't know that for a fact - just seems easier.  And as long as you're consistent in the way you count, improvement will be measurable.

Hias all, looking for some feedback as to how ya know if you are ready for a HIM or not. Last month distance totals for me were 404 biked, 91 run and 9 miles swam. I am doing typically 10 to 15 hours in workouts weekly. I can complete each of the distances in isolation, and have done some bricks like 1 mile swim, 25 mile bike and 33 mile bike 5 mile run (once so far) and some shorter bricks. My Oly was at the end of July and I finished in 2:46.

The HIM is 10/12/08 and I think there is like a 7 ish hour limit on the race. I am not sure about going the full 13 mile run after the 56 bike. Anyway open to any collective wisdom out there. The problem is after October there is like nothing for 6 months or whatever.

I have looked at the HIM plan in BT and I am currently doing workouts that equal or surpass those and still have a little time left to work on it (like 4 weeks and a taper 8( ). Anyway, any input is welcome.

And ya that there is a sweet ride. Unfortunately I am already not nearly as good as my equipment.

That is the beauty behind these things... You never know when you are ready!  It just happens... If you can swim a mile, bike 45 miles, and run 10 miles, you can do a 1/2 Ironman... Come race day everything falls into place... When training (brick specific) you are not doing full distance's... I think the farthest I ran off the bike was an hour (this was after a 5 hr work out)... So if you are doing 5 miles... That is more than sufficient..... Here was my training in my peak months for Ironman

July's totals:
Bike:24h 13m 48s  - 431.8 Mi
Run:17h 28m 24s  - 116.55 Mi
Swim:4h 20m 31s  - 13276 Yd

June's totals:
Bike:24h 51m 31s  - 424.4 Mi
Run:13h 32m 55s  - 95.69 Mi
Swim:5h 04m  - 16568.07 Yd

May's totals:
Bike:23h 23m 04s  - 405.82 Mi
Run:15h 18m 34s  - 89.15 Mi
Swim:2h 11m  - 7796.15 Yd
Mountaineering:6h 02m 12s
