phoenixazul - 2009-06-22 10:52 AM arrrrrrrrrghghkjfalsdkjf;lasdjkf;lakdjf;asldfjk;fkj;ldfkja;ldfj!!! Immigration sucks. Sucks sucks sucks sucks. I'm not going to be able to return to the UK because I'm poor. I need to find $5,600 USD (2,800 GBP) like, yesterday (and that's if my husband stays in the US because he'd cost an additional $3,200), and then not dip below that for 3 months...in which time it will be more than 12 months since my graduation and therefore I won't have enough points on the educational front to qualify, even if I have the money qualification. Annnd of course there's no work history for me because I'm freakin disabled right now and can't work. I'm seriously so f*cking crushed at this point that I can't stand it.

That sucks, sorry to hear it.  But aren't you a UK citizen, and if so, why is there a $$ requirement?

I'm unfortunately not a UK citizen, despite spending a ridiculous amount of time there in the past few years (legally, I might add) and there in lies the problem. If I had been born in the UK, or even in the EU, this wouldn't be a problem. When you're born outside the UK/EU, you have to prove "maintenance" to enter and work. That means proving that you've had at least 2,800 gbp in your bank account for 3 months (and never gone below that) before applying (you've got to supply bank records to prove this...had to do it for my other visas as well). Its just so freakin' painful to see something I've wanted for a long time to be flushed away because of circumstances that I really can't control...well I mean I guess I could control...but I can't help where I was born or my accident or not having been born wealthy.

Dayam, that sounds like a ton of work still.  Doesn't the church still have the notion of a vicarage, or are those days long gone?

Brian can have a better answer, but the vicarage was for the vicar, not the head pastor.  They had there own house.  At least that's how the Lutherans roll.  Prly cuz they don't pay vicors much.

Ah OK, I should know all this since my dad was a Lutheran pastor, but he never had his own congregation after I was born.  Though I vaguely remember him saying *his* dad (who was a head pastor) lived in a house provided by the congregation...

You could also use the term "rectory" or more common in Lutheran circles, "parsonage."  Most congregations got rid of their parsonages a few decades ago, and instead give pastors housing allowances.  eh.  poTAYto, poTAHto... tax implications are slightly better for the allowance than the parsonage... but I would not have minded a parsonage at all.

The congregation I serve had a parsonage but I never lived in it, because it was falling apart due to the old clay lake it was on... the house was literally crumbling down around us... It hadn't been lived in for about ten years before that.

Sheesh, I don't blame ya.  I guess too many congregations assume that pastors and their families should be sustained by the Word of God alone...

while there are certainly congregations who treat the pastor as a tenant... most congregations I know of are pretty good about the parsonages.  In fact, in recent years, smaller congregations have found it beneficial to have parsonages to help attract young pastors who might not be able to get a loan or have the down payment for a house. Then they also give the pastor a housing equity account where they bank away 3% or so of the value of the house for the sake of equity...

Hey. Hillbilly. Why don't you go grab a Schlitz from the toolbox/cooler in the back of your dually and shoot at mailboxes and highway signs with the gun from your back window while you're at it.

Again, you forgot `NTTAWWT' ...

But don't let her hairy pits and legs mislead you. It really it was a woman who I found wandering the woods. I think her name was Nell and she kept saying `Tay in da win' ...' You're probably related to her. She's probably your grandmother and your cousin and your niece.
