Ah found the stats on the Zip 404 fancy wheels.  Time savings of 8:30 ish for an IM.  The problem is I need to improve my bike split by 1 hour or more.  Oh well we see after I get faster.  $ for the wheels is around $$1500 to 2000

Those are some pricey wheels. My new bike will cost less than that. But I do hope you get fast enough to buy them one of these days.

Great swim for me today! Run was rough. Either it really was the heat or I wimped out. I cut it short by .4 of a mile. Temps are finally rising here so 2pm run need to be rare. Must get up earlier, yuk! This might be one of my biggest training weeks yet. From here on out I will be doing my longest ever everything. I plan to survive!

Larry- is your race next weekend?

Larry -- enjoy the week leading up to the race. You've done the training, you are ready, and you'll see just much the work has done for you once you get to the starting line. Have fun, enjoy, and relish the day. You've done *incredible* things since New Years Day. Incredible -- now go out and reap the benefits. Wish the race were closer -- i'd go cheer you on!

You looking at the new Zipp 404 Firecrest wheels, Steve?

My ride has been pushed off to the afternoon due to some must do things at home this AM. Will try to get a good 40 mile ride in. Tomorrow AM is a 6-7 mile run. Going to be hot here, so it will be an early AM one. I'll try to get a picture or two of the sunrise!

Carol -- how do you manage with the heat? Just part of living in Texas or are your rides at 4 AM?

So I entered this 20k bike race today, early morning not much wind flat course, local race, who knew we had one.  I wasn't sure it was going to be on pavement until I got there.  So the good news was that I won and found out the prize was $50 woot.  Also, I averaged 22.7 mph.  My legs are cooked, so my 63 mile bike ride this afternoon probably will be very long and the run even slower.  But wow, now if I could only hold that speed for another 100 miles with wind and hillls thrown in and I would be all set.  Time to go stretch those calves and thighs before heading out.  Enjoy your Saturday folks.

Congrats, Steve! Are you now a pro that you are taking prize money?   Good luck w/ the ride today. And the run. You've earned a good nights sleep after all that is done.

Anyone else watching the Tour de France? These guys are insane riders. Just powerful and steady beyond belief. The stage today ended on a 20% grade incline, after going 123 miles. These guys would leave any one of us in the distant dust without much effort, I suspect . Fantastic bike p0rn as well.

Samantha, great job getting the workouts in....some feel good, some not so much, but you're getting it done!

Steve, congrats on your bike race win!  Sounds like the bike focus to your training is paying off.  What are you going to do with the $50 winnings?

Mike, biking is OK done relatively early, but I'm failing miserably at coping with the heat on the run.  So shifting my focus of late to more biking and less running. One of the things I've learned on this journey is that changing up the mix is OK just as long as I keep moving.

Larry and Jim, getting excited for you about your upcoming races!  Showtime is almost here.

Today was really awesome.  There is nothing like sharing the gift, as many of you have already discovered.  Kerry & I headed out early, rode a few miles to Lifetime Fitness, and joined the group for a bit so he could see what a group ride was all about.  We peeled off from that and rode on a really nice multi-use path.  Very little traffic so early in the morning, a little cloud cover, and no wind, so it was a smooth sail.  Stopped for coffee and a smoothie on the way home.  We signed up for the "Peach Pedal" for next weekend, which will include rest stops with locally grown ice cold peaches .

It has been hard to keep up with all the great stuff going on! Reflection seems to be a common theme here lately and the things we have learned not just about the sport but about ourselves is amazing.

Steve great job as always on your race with very impressive speed. Larry and Jim, it will be race time before you know it. Elena, nice milestone with the 50 mile.

There are just so many ways to measure success: speed, distance, weight loss, health, new friends, etc..

It is hard to imagine anyone is not a winer here!

WIth that said here are my June totals:

June's totals:
Bike:6h 45m  - 103.08 Mi
Run:7h 30m 37s  - 42.83 Mi
Swim:5h 19m  - 11750 Yd
Strength:30m
Canoeing:1h 00m
Core Training:30m

Basically maintained what my May totals were which is nice to see. My first Tri (a sprint race) is two weeks away. This has been a challenge which I have some mixed feelings for. I wanted to be faster at this time but am glad to have the confidence that I will finish (barring the unforeseen). Even so confidence is great but you still need to run the race!

Anyway great job everyone, hang in there, trust the training, and have fun!

It turned out to be a reasonably warm day peaking at 96 F for my run.  I used a lot of water on the bike (88 ounces in 63 miles) then picked up a quick 15 oz at the house and then went out on the run.  The first 3 miles were pretty flat, but settled in after that though the pace was slow throughout the run.  Was just to get it completed.  On to my 17 mile run for tomorrow. Finally I can get some heat acclimation going.

Headed out to watch a friend to her first tri. Its supposed to be 95 F today. Her training was sub-par and she is doing many firsts on race day, but I'm proud of her. She's a single mom and this is part of her journey to lifestyle change!!! If you pray please pray for my friend.

Glad to be done with this week.  196 miles biked, 59 miles run 9000 yards swum for a total of 23 hours.  This morning's run was 17 miles and I was pretty tapped out.  The temp rose 25 degrees during my workout and by mile 6 I was wondering if I was going to be able to finish without any walking.  But, I got it done ( no walking) and that ends my biggest peak week of the year.  Taper weeks coming up will be very welcome.  Time to finish those shelves in the garage and restain the decking.

Just fyi I will be heading out a week from tomorrow to Colorado for some pretraining in more heat and elevation prior to the HIM on 7/29.  I will bring my laptop, but not sure to what extent I will have access to the internet.  So if I am not posting for a bit, that is why.

Hope everyone is enjoying their heat acclimation.  Good stuff for race day.

Oh I have seen this picture, but just read the story. This guy is at Kona, at mile 105 he gets hit by a motorcycle totaling his bike.  He caries his bike, walking in his socks the remaining 7 miles (like 2+ hours) blisters etc., very hot pavement) not nearly enough water and then completes the marathon finishing within the cutoff.  (Rule: you can walk with your bike, but you can't just leave your bike behind and hoof it to the T2 transition).  Something to keep in mind when you think you are having a bad training day.  It could be worse.  Hats off to this guy, hear of a lion.

I just got back from a weekend of 14 year old baseball in the 105 degree heat. It's cooled down and I owe a 1 hour bike ride yet tonight.  It's funny, that I am more tired as I finish tapering and I am getting plenty of sleep and eating more.  In many ways I wish the race were tomorrow.  Steve, great job on the bike race.  Everyone else, keep up the hard work.  Gotta go, time for the wife.  We've been married 17 years today!

Steve -- LOVE the photo. I'm currently readingn Macca's "I came here to win" book, and he actually mentions this guy. Whatever year this was Macca had given up on the race during the run, and was sitting in a sponsor's car. The guy with the bike (pictured) walked right by them on his way in. Macca said something to the effect it was the most humiliating/embarrassing moment of his career. Whoever that guy is, he defines awesomeness and desire!!!

Insane/incredible week Steve. Fantastic work.

Larry get some rest, and enjoy the week. Just a few days until you make it all happen!! Congrats on 17 years! The wife & I had our 17th last Monday!

112 miles today! Absolutely brutal ride! I broke my aerobars arm rest 20 miles in so couldn't go aero at all. It was well over 100 degrees throughout my last 2 hours or so and the winds were fierce, like riding in a convection oven! I think I stopped and cried a few times, my arms cramped so badly from not being able to go in the aerobars! I am praying for weather like we had last year in Santa Rosa where I don't think it ever got over 80 degrees and was even cold during the first loop!I'm really missing my training partner Mitch, he's still unable to bike or run and it's driving him nuts. Hopefully he will be able to resume soon but probably no chance of a half this year! Miss you buddy!I am definitely freaking out that Vineman is less than 3 weeks away! I am excited because I feel I am going into it with no injuries but I am still a lot heavier than I thought I would be (i wish i could show you guys some super impressive before and after pics like Larry but ive only dropped about 20 lbs this year) and when I crunch the numbers I am looking at a 16-17 hour day as long as everything goes well, but this is ironman, something always goes wrong! But honestly, it is what it is! I love this sport and I love this group and very happy to be sharing this journey. I have friends that are new to the sport and they say they would love to do Ironman, and I always tell them pick a race and do it. If its your first, pick a race a year or so out and most importantly don't worry so much that you don't think you can finish, enjoy the training and know that 99% of people would never even attempt one!I hope everyone had a super weekend of training and enjoyed!

My friend ended up having a great race. Sprint distance finished in 1:50. For such little training that's pretty good.

Joe - Your first race is coming up and it will be life changing. when my friend finished today she walked away with confidence and a new perspective on who she is and what she can accomplish. Great job getting the workouts in!

Steve - great miles this week. I wanted to tell you I have really been able to get my shoulder pain problem identified. I was definitely not entering the water with a high elbow and putting a ton of pressure on my shoulders. It has been hard to keep my arms doing the right thing, but I notice a difference almost instantly. So thank you for talking me through that and helping me know how to manage the pain without injury! Have fun in Colorado!

That picture is amazing. Words fail me, but thank you for sharing it. I hope it sticks with me as I'm out there feeling beat.

Larry - 6 days and counting. YOur body is probably tired of not moving so it would rather just sleep...hahaha. Have fun celebrating life with your bride of 17 years and congrats!

Jim - Sounds like you can identify with the guy carrying his bike. I wouldn't be surprised if he cried a few times as well. It is so cool that you made it through all 112 miles. You had so many factors working against you. I think I would have quit. I will pray with you on the weather deal.  Great job getting 20 pounds off.

I sure do appreciate being part of this group as well. Thanks for all your efforts to keep up with my training as well as your own. Not so easy in a busy world of family, work, training and all the rest of life.

I had a great week again. I am getting better at getting all my workouts in and not skipping any. this week was 9.75 hrs of training. I have definitely felt the sting of the heat and am realizing I need to change up when I am getting my workouts in unless I want to intentionally train in the heat. Today I swam 2200 yrds at 2:13/100. That is a little farther than race distance, so with 8 weeks still to train my swim should be great as long as I keep my shoulders under control. Bike and run continue improving. I look forward to the new bike I am gonna find a great deal on

Happy Monday!

Larry, congrats on 17 years of marriage!

Jim, wow, what a ride!  Sounds like great prep both mentally and physically.

Samantha, glad your friend did well.  Hopefully will be the first of many for her!

Mitch, wow, so sorry about the continuation of illness/injury struggles.  Would be great to hear from you if you get a chance.

Steve, are you doing Boulder 70.3?

Elena, how goes it for you?

Taking a total rest day today.  I felt totally exhausted yesterday after run and church, and slept a LOT.  Tweaked muscle in upper back feels a little better, though can still feel it if I breathe deeply or move the wrong way.  Our heavy gas powered weed eater is not a good fit for me at all, and I'm pretty sure that's what did it.  I need to see if they make a weed eater in about a 50 frame.  Wait, I'm confused....never mind.

Apperantly my email was hacked..never had that happen before.  So thought it was odd that I wasn t getting any emails..(notifications from BT Baowolf mentor group). Glad to see that everyone is still pluggin' along...as am I.

Loved that photo of the athlete carrying his bike.  Perseverance.

Steve, I think you had mentioned a while back that we need to allow 2 weeks for fitness in SBR to take effect.  Is that right? My half-aquabike is 3 weeks away.  Longest bike so far is 51 miles.  I guess Im asking because im wondering if it would be of any benefit to get in 60ish long ride this week.  (that may be a stupid question).  Or do i go into the aquabike without ever riding the 56?

Signed up for an October half marathon.  Ran it last yr with a time of 2:16.  How much can I expect to improve?  Can I run a 2 hour half mary??  I definitely have run more this year than I ever did in the past.  Last week I ran 5 miles @ 8:11 pace with super fresh legs. I know i have it in me, but not sure how training would look for Aug-Oct.  Whatcha think?

So many big races coming up for everyone.  Whoo Hoo!

Jim something doesn't have to go wrong during an IM.  I have done 3 without anything going wrong.  Second, Vineman has a max timelimit 16 hours not 17 hours, but you will be fine.  Sorry that I have not been checking your logs closely enough, you do have enough long runs in, but you you should not have gone longer than 3 hours for your long run.  So though you got the 18 mile runs in which is really good, your pace put you at 4 hours which is too long and increase risk of injury and really long recovery.  In IM training 2:30 to 3:00 is how much time you should spend on your long run.  If you want to go run focused you would just do more runs during the week.  For example last week for me was something like 8,10, 11, 6 (brick) 17.  But my 17 was 2:43 in duration.

Your bike looks solid distance wize 80,60,80, 112.  You have a 4000 swim back a ways and it would be nice to get in one more around 4000 this week if your shoulders are fine.  Hopefully your nutrition and hydration were good on the bike.  Typically Vineman is fine tempwize until around 1pm and the headwind on the bike keeps you cool enough.  It is the run where you will need to manage your temperature by dowsing yourself with water.  You are in good shape for your race, go in with confidence, keep your paces where they should be.

Samantha, your training consistancy and distances are coming along nicely.  It looks like a 2000 yard swim, 35 mile bike and 5-8 mile run are becoming comfortable distances for you.  It is great to have you in group and great to see you moving out of beginner ish triathlete to become a solid athlete.  Really feel good about your training.

Carol, be careful of those extra activities they can tweek our muscles in unusual ways as we are already taxing our bodies pretty well.  Break that weedwacking up over a couple days and change lead arms on the machine from time to time.  Some lite stretching and a hot bath may be what the doctor ordered.

With a 40:55 5 mile you have the speed to run a sub 2 hour half.  To do so you will have to bring up your weekly miles into the 25 to 30 range with longs getting into the 12-15 mile range.  Remember that your long run needs to be at most half of your weekly miles so 35 weekly with a 15 long would be an ideal peak week to hit 3x before your race.  It would be good to hit a 55-60 mile bike at some point this week with your race 3 weeks out.  But yes try to get it in before next monday so you can get the benefit of it for your race.  You can finish your race without having ever biked longer than 55 with your several rides in the mid 40s, but it is nice to have the feel of the distance under your belt.  So you it woudl be good, but your choice, anything over 40 would be fine for this week, but I would go 55-60.

Oh and I am doing the HITS HIM in Sterling, it got moved from Fort Collins because of the fires.

If anyone needs some inspiration, this is the last 4 minutes of CDA this year.  It includes the last 10 ish folks who finished before the time cutoff.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndY9xptZI9w&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Good swim for me this morning.  2000 yards, main set 5x100 yards at 1:48/100 and then 200 at 1:41 pace (way fast for me). Going to be one more really tough week in training for me, had to relook at my last 3 weeks of training before race and fine tune distances and such.  Lunch now and then 35mile bike and 8 mile run, temps rising nicely should be solidly in the 90s for my run.
