Expert 829 | Subject: RE: Fred D and Queen Zipp's SWIM, BIKE RUN consistency thread.... CLOSED While lying on the couch feeling sick last night, I watched "Forks over Knives" on Netflix. I've watched quite a few of these dietary documentaries lately, for some reason this one just really grabbed me. The narration is a bit dull, but man what a compelling movie. It actually has research and data instead of just a bunch of hippies pushing the vegan thing. I'm converting to a plant based diet. It won't happen overnight, dairy will be the toughest. When I look at my recent food logs, my protein all comes from animal based foods. If it's not meat, it's cheese, eggs and yogurt. I need to work in more plant proteins before cutting out the animals. Anyway,,, I'm feeling a bit better, but still going to hold off on exercise for a day or two. |

CLOSED cathyd - 2013-03-05 2:27 PM Fred D - 2013-03-05 8:07 AMActually I use metric all the time in my job, as does anyone in the USA who works in any field relating to science or medicine. We, in America, just like to be obstinate about a few things lol. We've used metric since the '70s here but I don't know many people who know their weight in kg, almost everyone weighs themselves in lbs here, even the kids in their 20s who grew up using metric. I like to record my runs and biking in miles also, and at the gyms here most of the treadmills are set for miles, not km. The stores usually list prices in both per lb and per kg. Gas is priced per litre but when we are comparing fuel efficiency we always convert to miles/gallon. We're the same. Except, as Shawn said, most people use stones here (which is 14 pounds - don't ask me!). I started using kg a number of years ago (can't even remember why) and it stuck. I like it because most people don't know what it equates to in "real money", so I can discuss my weight without feeling like anyone's judging me... |

You have me psyched for race season, and I may even try to get a tri in earlier in the season than usual. I also have to remember to bring a camera to races. I would like to get in the weight challenge also. I am 200 and would like to get to 190 by the end of March. We were supposedly changing to metric when I was in grade school back in the 60's. We still have a little ways to go |

Bryan Dunn had a boy. Just wanted to share. Had a great day at disney yesterday. We are off to magic kingdom soon and then for an adult dinner at the flying fish. Hope to get a run in sometime, but we will see. What's everyone training? Fred, I didn't know you were at WDW. There are a couple good spots to run there, either the Boardwalk/Swan & Dolphin area or over at Downtown. Downtown in the morning, before it gets busy, around the lake to Saratoga Springs and then down to the creek across from Key West. Enjoy! |

Member 108 | Subject: RE: Fred D and Queen Zipp's SWIM, BIKE RUN consistency thread.... CLOSED I'm still under the weather from the end of the past weekend. Considering it's been a higher then most flu season and with my kids taking turns being sick, I feel fortunate to have gotten through the past few months somewhat healthy. Still asides from a recovery swim session Monday, I've taken yesterday and today off... so off a slow start to this month... feeling better though and hope to get back on track this weekend. On a happier note, I am planning to try out a few entry level carbon tri bikes this weekend. I'm about to let go of my gas guzzling performance sedan for a prius wagon so I'll have my own justification =). I've been reading a ton of reviews and looking at what my Tri / Roadie friends have and what they have to share. I was lucky to pick up a used RS for my first road bike after getting fitted but now looking at the popular Felt B16, Cervelo P2 and the Cannondale Slice models to see which best fits me. I don't think I could go wrong with these choices and be happy for years to come..and that should conclude my tri gear shopping for the year (fingers crossed) =) |

Member 3145 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Fred D and Queen Zipp's SWIM, BIKE RUN consistency thread.... CLOSED I use metric every day at work, but I still have to run to a calculator to figure out what it means! I have toyed with the idea of recording mileage in km just to see a higher number, but don't...probably because I'd have to convert it from the gym machines/mapmyride to do it and that is just another step. I never think about reporting weight in kg. The idea of having to double that number (plus more) to think about it in lbs is just depressing.
58 min on the spin bike at the gym at lunchtime. Great workout spinning higher cadence at a constant level today, rather than intervals of increasing resistance. Hoping to get some yoga in tonight after I get home.
Hope everyone has a great day! |

Extreme Veteran 692 England | Subject: RE: Fred D and Queen Zipp's SWIM, BIKE RUN consistency thread.... CLOSED I went for my first ever swim in a 50m pool today. I met up with one of the fast guys from the tri club, and hung onto his toes as best I could. (I found out today that he was a childhood swim team star, so I no longer feel bad about not being able to keep up with him ) It was strange swimming the longer lengths, but I found it really useful, and I think I'll be going again. It was a lot more continuous, which I think will help my endurance. |

I spent several hours in various bike shops with my Dad. It's a bit of a nightmare because very few places have any in stock to try, but I've arranged to go back on Monday to one of the shops and try out a couple of good options. The best value for money option I've found so far is this one: Forme ATT carbon It's a British company that seem to do some really good value options (my mountain bike is a Forme). I don't know much about these things, so if anyone has any comments on the spec etc I'd really appreciate it? As a comparison, it'll cost me about the same as a Cannondale Slice 105. |

Expert 1187 Ontario | Subject: RE: Fred D and Queen Zipp's SWIM, BIKE RUN consistency thread.... CLOSED I posted this in TT but will also ask here : I finally got my bike set up on the trainer a couple weeks ago and have done a few short easy rides - started with 20 minutes, then 25, longest was 30 minutes last Friday. Last night I got on the bike and almost immediately had pain in my left knee and down my lower leg to my ankle. I tried changing the angle of my foot slightly but it didn't help and I ended the ride after 10 minutes. Today the knee is still achey. I've never had knee pain on the bike before and have had this bike since 2007. I had a fit when I bought it and again when I put on aerobars the second year. Is there anything obvious that I'm missing that could suddenly cause me to have knee pain on the bike? |

Second I was wondering if you moved the cleat position on your shoes any if it might alleviate some of this? |

Also, if you didn't move or change your cleats, check to see if maybe the cleat is loose. Don't know what kind of pedals you have, but can you adjust the float? Maybe you could use a little more float. I'm no expert, so please take my thoughts with a grain of salt. Kristen, nice picture. What a great place to run! |

Taking this on board I spent some time on google last night checking out my short list of bikes. Turns out the carbon version of the tri bike above is brand new this year. So noone really has one yet. Makes my decision a little more tricky because it's definitely more of a risk. I think I'm erring towards the other option, which has many good online reviews and I'm more sure the geometry is going to work for me. Just got to try out the two on Monday and then I should be ready to make a decision... It was almost easier when I bought my road bike because I didn't know anything, so I just sort of picked what looked like a decent bike for the money. But the tri bike is going to be about 2.5x as much money, and for that I want to be sure of my choice. |

Member 108 | Subject: RE: Fred D and Queen Zipp's SWIM, BIKE RUN consistency thread.... CLOSED Good Morning Everyone, Please submit and calculate your weight update today. I had a very disappointing start. I usually pre-cut and pre-plan my snacks and some meals when I am in training mode but unable to do so being under the weather. If you add in some comfort meals and the fact that my appetite does not decrease even when sick, I was lucky to even lose a pound. During past challenges, I usually lose a big chunk the first week then taper off the rest of the challenge so hopefully I can have more of a consistent weight loss this time around. I'm about to go for a run before work and have a busy training weekend planned so hope to get my diet refocused as well. Have a great weekend everyone ! p.s. Chapfallen, is there an easy way to change the order of the chart based on percentage lost after everyone submits their weekly weight ? TIA !
