Heal up and I hope things look up soon!Karen--Good job on your race & I here you about the humidity! We've had the same weather here, I'm not a fan!!Um...alligators and sharks?!?! You guys are braver than I!! I'm sure it's all relative to what you're exposed to, but I don't think I could do it! There's a reason I choose IMWI (no sharks or alligators)! DJ--I think you should sign up for the HIM! You could totally do it.So yesterday my bike ride was all about wildlife. I went out about 6am, & came across a deer, a gaggle of hissing geese & a bunch of baby bunnies all within the 1st 2 miles, even though I was in town. Then as I was finished & heading to my car, I went over a pedestrian bridge & have to make a sharp right turn. Well I was going slow & spacing off a bit & cut the corner. Only problem was the ground was washed out & my front wheel goes into the foot drop off. There was nothing I could do & I'm pretty sure my face hit a dead bird I saw at the last minute (at 1st I thought it was dog poop, so yes, it could have been worse!). I'm fine & my bike is fine too. Just a silly mistake!! Redeamed myself with an 80mile ride followed by a 30 min run. Hot & humid!! Headed to the pool in a few to cool off!!Hope everyone is having a great Saturday!! Excellent training Ali! Way to shake off the spill! |

I am 90% sure I am going to do it again next year. Not ready to commit quite yet though. I would like a little revenge on that swim and run! That stinks that you had a spill at the end of your ride, but great job on your brick!I just signed up for Ironman Florida 70.3. They moved it to April next year, probably to try to beat some of the heat from this year. Price is "only" $199 through today--anyone else? Ken? Price goes up another $26 through mid August, then up again through February. |

Extreme Veteran 601 Cold Spring, NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Originally posted by CyborgQueen Cycling...what else? Actually, I am working on the rest of the season. After volunteering at the Las Vegas Tri Club sprint race, it sparked a bit of fire in me to do some triathlons this year. I still have two big rides (Park to Park on Tandem and Pedal to the Medal, which I want to try to get under an hour to get to the top). I'm working on doing a schedule that won't break me or break the bank. I could use some advice! Las Vegas Tri Club Sprint - Bike Relay (12 miles) 9/15 Las Vegas Triathlon Sprint - Bike Relay 9/22 Park To Park Pedal - Tandem 60 miles 10/12 Pumpkinman HIM - Bike Relay - 10/19, IF I cannot get a runner, then I may drop down to Olympic, and do B/R - The bike course in this one is a B!tch!! IronGirl Sprint or Oly - 10/26 BIGGIE - HITS Lake Havasu HIM (FIRST HIM) - 11/9 (you got that right! I'm *highly* thinking about it....I'm more worried about the run) My concern that it seems a bit "much", but in reality, I'm only doing one "full" triathlon, while the others are bike relay. I can do a "brick" for a couple of these. I may just do IronGirl Sprint instead of Oly because it's pretty close to the Lake Havasu HIM. Another option is to do HITS Palm Springs, which is in December, and that gives me an extra month. Palm Springs is a bit further away from LV. Bike course is flatter (667 ft elevation vs 750 for Lake Havasu, and LH has two steep climbs and flat for the rest. PS has rolling hills). Seems like the avg bike is 3:10-:15 range....that's 17ish mph for Palm Springs. I have to decide very soon before the prices go up in August on exactly what I'm going to do. What would you do if you were in my shoes? Some info: I'm NOT looking to be fast/speedwork etc, but I don't want to "just survive". I do have somewhat a time in mind, but it'll be a conservative goal. My swim sucks, and I really do not like to swim that much in training...Racing, I have no problems. So I'm not looking to be fast here, but at the same time, I don't want "to just survive"....just to swim smart, that's all. I have done two half-marys, and I feel like I'm a little bit faster, not much, this year even though I haven't really run much lately. Bike - ptth, no problems there. :D Can I get away with this weekly schedule? 2x Swims, 3-4x Bike, 3-4x Run (2 short, 1 mod, 1 long - nothing specific, just run by time or miles). Thanks for any help! Do one of those HIMs! if you start now, i doubt youd need the extra time for PS, so I'd do whatever is more convenient or interesting to you. I dont think the elevation diff will make a difference to a red rock riding roadie like you. at least the runs look flat either way. in terms of scheduling, what you have down seems fine to go beyond "just finishing" but when you say 3-4 runs, Id definately make it four. Since its not your strongest leg, keep the frequency up as much as you can. Im not much of a swimmer so 2x week just means I wont get worse and will feel confident to finish. probably need 3-4x/ for decent improvemment but if you're fine at the distance and not worried about swimming for a PR, keep the focus om the run. your biking will take care of itself with all you have on your plate... Have fun! |

I am hoping to swim in the ocean a few times since I have only been to the pool a few times this year. When I return from Vacation, it will be 12 weeks to my IM race for which I am getting very nervous. Hope everyone is doing well. |

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Short run and a swim this morning. No bike on the schedule but the race organizers and the bike shop in Geneva have organized a memorial ride for tonight to remember the 2 riders that lost their lives in the race last weekend. The second rider passed away from her injuries this past week. |

Well....really we just had house guests and played tourist for a week. We had fun, but our guests live a completely different lifestyle than us. So it was hard! I got a few rides in to keep up on things some, but mainly stayed up late and slept half the days. We did a lot of eating out and drinking. So I'm sure ther is some damage for me to referse. I had my coach over last night for a chat. We are going to test the feet this week with a short run and see if I can still salvage doing the Naperville sprint tri. My wife put bought a spot there for a booth to advertize her business, so we will be there anyway. Lot's of friends and family doing that one too. Can't believe it's only 2 weeks away! Hope everyone else is doing well! |

Veteran 458 Greensburg, PA | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed I am happy to say that I am off work this week! Last week was not such a great week training-wise as I just felt lazy and cranky and hungry! I started my week off with a little brick this morning. Not long, but hard! I did a 20 mile hilly bike, followed by a 3.5 mile run. I felt great on the run. It was overcast with just a touch of humidity. It was definitely faster than my runs have been lately. We are headed to Illinois/St. Louis early Wednesday morning. We are going to some sprint car races in the evenings, and just being tourists during the days. I am doing an Oly on Saturday in Springfield, IL. I have never been there and have no idea what the race will be like, but it was just in the perfect location for me to do while we are away. I think it will be fun racing in a new place! My training this week leading up to it will probably not be the best, but I am just looking forward to having fun! Hope everyone has a good week! |

I am really struggling with increasing my training time and that is probably creating more anxiety for me. I seem to be able to consistently train for 7 hours a week total and a week like last week I ended up taking two days off. Not planned, just life gets on the way... My other problem is swimming. There is a pool here, but the hours that open swim is available they are not convenient for me. I prefer to swim at the lake, but doing that alone is not a good idea of course. I understand that B2B has a forgiving swim, but still worries me. I am realistic enough to uderstand that I will not be fast, but on 7 hours a week training, I don't know how it will go. |

I think the biggest problem with only 7 hours of training for an IM is that for IM training, that is less than what should be your key workouts for the week. Long bike, long run and a swim. You should have at least a few weeks with a 4 to 6 hour bike, same with a few weeks of long run, of at least 2 hours and most would have some weeks with a 3 hour run. Plus an hour to 90 minutes in the water. Add in the shorter weekday training and it is quickly over 10 hours a week. Not trying to make you nervous Eddie, just wanting to encourage you to get at least some of the long bikes in before your race. |

Veteran 268 Northern CT | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Wow - everyone seems to be ramping it up for their races..good job! Just got back from a very quick training trip to Tremblant. Took 9 hours to drive up (almost an hour just to get over the border - total chaos and then the car in front of me did not have the right papers!!) Glad I did it - alleviated a lot of stress being able to see the bike and run course. I just did one loop of the bike - amazing how fast 56 miles feels as opposed to the 100 I've done the past 2 weekends. The bike is really good - right up my alley. Reminded me a lot of Timberman (where I PR'd on the bike!) More rollers than hills - what goes up then goes down and flat. The most important thing will be not to burn out my legs the first time around (2 - out n back). The last 10 miles are 5 miles straight up and 5 miles straight down. I was hoping to do some of the swim, but there are too many boats out - they offer a practice course, but as the guy was describing it to me - he tells me to make sure I stay to the right of the buoys because on the other side is a salomon course for water skiers.....didn't give me a really safe feeling! Those getting ready for the first IM - on the Ironman site under News there's a good article from a woman who just completed IMCDA - rookie experience! She gave me my new mantra - eyes in the boat - takes me back to my rowing days!! Good training all! |
