Champion 9060 Charlottesville, Virginia | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group- CLOSED SSMinnow - 2009-02-19 11:03 AM Here is my VENT for February: I call my LBS to give them my final color selection from my bike build and get the crappiest news one could hear. Seven is no longer confident they can build my frame small enough for me. It is bad enough being 4'10" and not being able to put luggage in the overhead bin without standing on the seat, but now this! Turns out they did their math wrong and standover would be 1" to 1 1/2" greater. Serrotta already turned down the build. Going back in next week to jurry rig my current titanium Seven to see if standover will be an issue. I am pretty bummed. Ok, Vent over. Thanks for listening. did you give elite a call? Wonderful bike company. Have yet to hear a bad thing said about them. LOL, I am in the middle of eating lunch so will respond to the swim question when I have free hands to type a lot : ) |

Champion 9060 Charlottesville, Virginia | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group- CLOSED Ok, lunch over, probably a bad idea to eat very spicy thai food then do a brick but the thai place by my house is so very good. Anyways I honestly think the reason I got a bit faster is by having a coach that is honest. I have tried 3-4 coaches before her and they all said my form was ok and just tried to make small adjustments here or there. My new coach tells me I suck and we talk about how I can suck less by changing things around. She has had me work on a deeper entry when I pierce the water, working on my rotation, working on my breathing, and any number of other things I am doing completely wrong. I have changed my swim workouts to include more drill time vs. plain swimming time. When we work something new into my technique, I understand that I will get slower at first while trying to concentrate on that new technique but before I know it I stop thinking about it and just do it and I get a bit faster. I also started paying more attention to time and stroke count. Before I would just swim to get the distance in, kind of like a long run where the object is to get miles and not worry so much about pace. Now I really look at what my time is per 50/100 or whatever distance I am swimming and think about why this 100 is slower or faster than my previous one. Same with stroke count, how many strokes did it take to get across the pool. |

My average number was 12 so I assume you count only the stroke of one arm, not both correct? If you are counting both and got a number of 10 I officially HATE YOU!!! Suzy, all kidding aside, is there such a thing as a children's frame that can be used? I've seen youth tri's where 10 year olds are riding road bikes so it made me wonder if there was such a thing. I assume you have tried the Women Specific Design bikes? Barry, is it time for new shoes? Calf and foot pain is usually my sign that it's time. |

My calf has been giving me some problems for a while now. Seems like everytime I run, it feels like it is pulling...half way up on the outside of my calf. It doesn't hurt bad, but I can feel it on every step. What should I do? I know nothing about taking care of these type of ailments. Will it get better over time by doing light workouts, or should I lay off the running for a period. It doesn't bother me at all when I walk. I don't think it will just go away. It probably needs some manual intervention like trigger work which you can do yourself or through a practioner. It would be helpful to get a little more info on location. Look at these links and give me a sense of which one is most accurate (scroll down to the foot and ankle section): http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cybertherapist/muscles/allmuscles.php Is there foot involvement or does the pain only eminate from the point where it is tight? Suzy This is the spot that is giving me trouble. It is tender to the touch, so I can find the spot. Should I use the rolling pin on it?

Honestly, I leave for one lousy swimming lesson and the board explodes! Barry, is it tender in the muscle belly or bone? The word "spot" always freaks me out! The muscle area you are referring to often has tightness issues due to foot flexion. Are you a toe runner or do you point your toes down when you pedal? Both shorten the muscle and then when you try to use it, BAM, pain. First course, would be gentle stretching. Do you feel a pull? Good. Hold it and carefully continue to stretch it a little more. You can also use a tennis ball, PT massage ball (my choice), foam roller and go over the entire calf (not behind the knee) including the sides. Heck, do the whole leg! I have a friend who kept running on a calf injury and eventually blew it apart in his last race. Result, three months no running. Barry, I LMAO over the proposed redesign of my bike. I was hoping to look cool, not like a clown, but if it gets me over the hills, well maybe! For now, I am going to hear what they have to say and see if another manufacturer might make sense. I have a lot of respect for Serrotta and Seven. There is someone in town who does Guru custom, but has far less fit experience than Cronometro. Might be another year on the road bike while I start more stretching exercises and begin to take Human Growth Hormone. . Tracey, I cannot see myself on a kids bike. It brings back memories of getting dunked in highschool. Tony, thanks for all the swim advice. I have a good instructor, but he is not a hard butt with me. Based on my past experiences every time we focus on speed I fall apart. Maybe I need another year of distance under my belt before I can progress to your level. I guess why they have older and older age groups to move into! Off to a meeting. I assume there will be another few pages to digest when I get back! Suzy Edited by SSMinnow 2009-02-19 3:07 PM |

Champion 9060 Charlottesville, Virginia | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group- CLOSED LOL, I wish I could get down a 25M pool in 10 strokes. We moved to a side pool for part of my lesson when I was counting strokes, not sure how long it was. In a 25M pool when I have my stuff together I am at 16-18 strokes. The theory is that I should be able to get down the pool in 10 strokes if I really wanted to, we'll see. One speed drill that was in a plan I did last year that I use all the time now on speed workouts is. 100 - all slow 100 - 75 slow, 25 fast 100 - 50 slow, 50 fast 100 - 25 slow, 75 fast 100 - all fast Like running don't do all workouts at max speed but throw them in every so often, I really like it. Again I am very slow compared to most but anything that I can pass on that helps someone else feel free to give me credit Suzy, I will work on finding you a bike that fits. I have a lot of free time at work.

Master 1952 Guelph, Ontario | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group- CLOSED Hi Gang. Are you all ever active here. Tons of good in formation. I have a couple of things today. I think I might have found out what is causing the groin muscle ache. I have been to both my chiropractor and massage therapist and they are in agreement that it is possibly/probably the hip flexor. I have started a good stretching and mucsle building routine which shoud help. Having said that I went to my MT yesterday before my workout and the workout was not pretty. Which leads into the second issue for today. I seem to be going backwards in my training. I road 30 K yesterday and it took over and hour and was pretty tired by the end. Went onto the treadmill and had trouble with even a 5K run. In the end I did wind sprints ove the last mile or so. That 5K took me in excess of 30 minutes. At least I was able to get the workouts in. Of course after my workout I got home and slipped on some ice and the pain in the groin was very uncomfortable. Good news here is that today it feels great. I am heading out for my swim today and will see if it is uncomfortable in the pool. Enough complaining. Good news is I have a job interview on Monday. Keep your fingers crossed. It would be a good position with the federal government. |

Expert 945 Auburn AL | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group- CLOSED Rob Hang in there ... probably just a stage, and it will get better. Be careful with that ice near the groin area...don't want to leave it on too long. I just got off the bike for an hour and a half. Didn't try to push it, but got in 23 miles. I am hoping that tomorrow will be a long run or long ride. I am on the fence, but am going to ride with the group if they ride...that will get me forty plus miles in. Or if the group doesn't ride, I think I will do a long run with the running group. As you can tell, I am kinda winging it on these workouts, but what the heck! The university pool has been closed all week for an SEC swim meet, so it will reopen sunday, and I plan to swim then. Hope everyone has a good weekend planned. I think my family are going to go to the lake tomorrow for the night. Looking forward to some open water swims when the weather gets warmer. |

I didn't realize how important rest is. Last week I pretty much took 3 days off (recommended by my trainer) and this week my body felt great, no aches or pains at all this week. I had my personal best swim yesterday and today my best run in over 12 months. At the end of the run, surprisingly I felt like I could do more, but wanted to hop on the trainer.
