Looks like a good plan and lets you gradually work on the running distance.  Are you sure you don't want to come Stateside for our season....you would have lots of places to stay....

Hello everyone.  I got back last night from a long weekend visiting my sister in Texas.  Haven't kept up with my great mentor group or the other forums.  I did stay peachy in Texas, but barely.  And now it is back to the usual routine.  Have a good week!

Cat, Have you looked at any of the 5K or 10K taining plans here on BT?  You could probably do a 5K without any major problems.  The 8K is a good distance but given your run backgound may be more than you wnat just yet.  I was thinking though if you wanted to challenge yourself for an 8K doing a 10K plan with a few adjustments would probably be a good way to approach it.

Need some love...I am sick and feel like CRAP. I was supposed to get a few short runs in before I race on Sunday....but do not know if I will be up to it. I am going to play it by ear, but do you think it really matters at this point? I have trained hard for this half and hope I am ready.....

What do you all think? Couch? Running shoes? Bit of both??

Hope you feel better Helen.  I would say stay on the couch for today- rest, hydrate and eat well.  If you are feeling a bit better do a short run on friday to just loosen up and test the waters.  Take care!

Ok... hopefully I did this right!  Here's the list updated with drcherrybomb21's link.  Please let me know if there's anything weird about it this time - the HTML editing on this thing is a little touchy.

I think the easiest way to grab the table is to hit the Quote button as if you're going to reply, then select and copy the whole table to paste into your training log.  (Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's it!)

Edit: The links in the table will work when you cut and paste into your Goals; links will go nowhere from the post below as it tries to redirect to an address in the "forum" section not the "training" section... toldya it was touchy!

Rest if you are sick. YOu have trained. Nothing you do now can HELP your race only muck it up.

Feel better, take some naps, and get lots of sleep.

THanks for the tip Judi... I might have to upgrade my BT membership to get access to more plans! The couch to 5K probably isnt what Im after...

Im really keen to give the 8k a go but I guess I need to feel like i have a plan in place to make it happen.. I am running more than I used to but thats stiill not very much...

And if Im honest Im very scared of running

Someone said the words 'September' and 'half marathon' to me this morning so thats certainly made me panic (thankfully that race has a 10k option too...but if I could do 8 in May???)

Couch - you are better off racing healthy after a couple of extra rest days than racing fatigued because you trained while you are sick!

I hope its nothing major and you start to feel better FAST!

Okay, all.

I'm looking for suggestions/advice/help.  My first Mary is in 11 days.  Any input on both the taper (sorry, to all the diehards, but I've been WAITING for this taper/rest thing!!) and pacing would be helpful.

My only (since a sprint tri in 2000) race experience is/was my half-mary in October, and it  was a 2:15, but I'd only trained 3 weeks for that.  Including 5 days in Cabo with the girls, but that's another story!

I've been running more hills, and the race is flat.  Knowing myself, my biggest problem could be going out too fast, but I also don't want to risk going out slower than I need to.  I've been able to hold 9:30 for 12 miles relatively flat, with some small hills.  Slightly sub-9 for 9 miles or less.  I held 10:30 for 21 (flat) miles last month - but it was with friends, and I know I could have gone faster.

I REALLY want to break 4:30....and would be thrilled beyond words with 4:00. I DO know that this is a ridiculous goal.....but isn't that the purpose of goals?!?

Right now, I'm really tired, and pretty sore.  I've been working hard - and have the blisters to show for it!  All advice will be gratefully accepted!!!

Are there going to be pace bunnies at the race? If so that would solve your pacing problems. I would line up with a bunny that is slower than you think you need and then you will have some gas left in the tank for a negative split.

Are you going to wear a heart rate monitor? This would be another way to pace.....you probably have an idea of what kind of heart rate you could sustain for 4 hours.

Just some ideas....I have been thinking about these things myself. I am going to wear a heart rate monitor on Sunday and try and pace that way.

Please feel free to ignore everything I have just written....I have never run a full marathon!! You my hero!

its totally customizable for distace, pace, and activity level!  play with it - you'll be ready for an 8 or 10K in no time!!! ;)

Never gonna ignore you, Helen, your advice is always good!  I'll look for the pace bunnies, and I don't own a HR monitor - that's on my to-do list!

Where I'm struggling is WHAT pace to try to hold.  My fantasy pace is a 9:10....and I know that I can hold it for a while, at least, so do I just start out with that and try to hold it?  That will feel SLOW in the beginning, and much more painful as I go along, I'm sure.  So do I go out a bit faster and try to build up a time cushion? 8:30;8:45;9:00...and then hold 9:10 as long as I can?

Today's a swim, then a 7+ mile run-hard, I think it's supposed to be.  At least the sun is out, and it will be 40 degrees before I drop the last kid and get to the pool!  I AM ready for summer!!!

What kind of topography for the race?  Our full mary the runners start flat and make the mistake of starting too fast then dying out when they get to the hills later on?  My instinct ( and I have only done half marys that were both relatively flat) is start slow and save juice for a negative split if you aren't facing any monster hills on the back half.

Regarding your taper, I am not sure what works best.  7 days for me is good, some people need more.  I tend to reduce volume but keep intensity.  I find that if you do that, and you feel like you are dogging it, come race day you are FRESH.  Super duper FRESH, it feels so good, you feel so strong it is awesome.  Probably i would scale back on any intense biking or swimming or other excercise because that is really not going to help.  If you feel strong, you could put in a fairly intense workout a 2-3 days out of the race, but I would not advise it.  The idea being that you stress the muscles so they build up their energy stores, frankly I have never tried it, never concidered myself to be in good enough shape to be that advanced.

Pick your pace and hold it.  Don't try to build a cushion, it will just burn you out.  Find YOUR pace bunny and stick to him.  Gut it out.  The first half should feel easy, like you are going to slow, it is boring, stupid boring.  Well, if you are going slow, great, you can speed up the last 10 or 5 k.  If you blow up, you cannot recover.  This is common accepted wisdom I think.

Remember you are running your own race.  You hold at 9:10 you reach your goal, and that is what you want.  So start at 9:10 and finish at 9:10 (if you have the gas then you can go faster).

A little bit of positive visualization before bed helps leading up to the race.  Imagine the wall, imagine what it will feel like, imagine pushing through it.

I have an idea for the challenge. I'm trying to figure out how to put it into words so it makes sense.

Have you ever had a bad experience or something at the time seemed really negative turn out to make a big huge positive change in your life? Share the experience....... Sort of the silver lining in the cloud thought.

I'll share what stands out to me for this....

In June 2007 I did my first day of bike racing...crits where you do laps and basically ride in a tight peleton with surges and break aways much like you see in the Tour but slower and we aren't as skilled.

First crit I did it was so incredibly hard and I fell off the back and basically time trialed to the end. I was signed up for the over 40 race in about 1.5 hours later, suggested to my husband we call it a day, but he and others encouraged me to stay and race.

Race started and I did much better at drafting and staying with the group. I jumped on someone's wheel (drafting) and she made a move up the outside so I ended up being 5-7th wheel (ie from front). There there was this steep left turn that the road narrows, and we had a crash and 7-8 folks went down, I was ejected from my bike and went head first into a metal street sign with a large sound, grazing it down my whole left side. I have no memory of the crash or about 1.5 hours after wards as I had a bad concussion and grade 3 AC separation.

Up until that time I had been gradually doing longer tris but a bit afraid to committ to doing an IM as I wanted to be faster before I went longer.

About 2 weeks after my crash I realized it was my pride of being slow preventing me from doing something huge that I wanted to do, and that I never knew when the opportunity to do an Ironman might be taken away from me. I easily could have been paralyzised in that bike crash and been unable to walk, run, cycling, swim and thankfully my helmet protected my head from what could have been tragic. So about 6 weeks after my crash I signed up to do IM Lake Placid. I honestly decided about 4-6 days before I could sign up I would do it.

I'm in a way appreciate the lesson my crash taught me as it reminded me that we need to be brave, try new things, as we never know when our ability to do something cool might be gone.

That was a really cool post Kathy.
