I got my lap counter today..and I used it! I got sooo carried away I did 24 laps! sure is nice to not have to continuously remind myself what lap I am on...instead I can focus on my technique. Which is great cuz I have none! haha

Julie I loved that link you sent. I am going to go back tomorrow and practice some of those drills.

I just got a call from Orthopedic Doctor from my hospital...he set up an appointment with the sports terrorists...I mean therapists and I am not sooo sure I want them poking and pulling and pushing my knee all around...cuz then it is going to hurt AGAIN! and it is so getting better....what do you guys think? have any of you had bad prolonged knee injuries? appreciate any help...I hate making decisions!

Hi Julie.  I have been struggling with my knees for years and really haven't been able to run much since I did a marathon in 2001.  Every time I would start to build up a little mileage base, I would end up in serious pain.   The kneecap itself did not hurt and it did not hurt under the kneecap.   I had x-rays and MRIs and the docs told me structurally my knees were fine.   If the pain was in the kneecap or under, I would have considered glucosamine.   Instead, the pain would be somewhere around the outside of the kneecap (inside top, inside middle, inside bottom, bottom, outside bottom, etc.) and I would kind of go through a cycle before the pain went away (Monday it would hurt one place, Tuesday somewhere else, Wed, etc.).   And this would happen on both legs.   I used to go through Bufferin like they were candy.   I literally gave up trying to run a couple years back.

Turns out all those places it hurt were attachment points for various muscles.  For each of those attachment points, there is a corresponding trigger point or two.   If you can release the trigger point, the pain goes away.   I went through hell the first couple of times I ran this month, but I kept after the trigger points and finally figured out where they were.  I now have personal experience making the pain go away at each of those points.   That is how I've managed to make progress on my running and cycling this month.    Note that people using a foam roller to clear up ITBS are really working the trigger points - the places that hurt so good are likely those points.

So, tell me more about your knee problems and let's see if I can help.

Now what counter did you get? I think I missed that conversation. I want to order one tomorrow while I'm surfing the net

Ok, if the knee feels better I wouldn't go unless they have already diagnosed the problem and you need therapy...why aggravate the poor thing.
Let us know what you decide.

Julee, I'm glad you like the SportCount.

The snow was already starting to accumulate when I got up this morning so I decided to skip the run and stay inside and do Pilates. I'm not getting in the strong month of running that I had planned. Oh well.

Morning ya'all!

I swam last night!  Alot better than last week - I added the nose plugs.  The coach was not thrilled about me having them, but whatever....  I also strained my shoulder.  I'm going to rest it for the week and hopefully it'll get better.

So anyways, he watched each of us swim a 25, then he gave us a critique of our form, etc.  He was actually impressed with my form and my stroke and my kick.  Not so much with my breathing.  I really need to keep my head down and tucked like having a tennis ball tucked under my chin.  I think he said he was going to bring one next week for me to use.  lol.  I really want to get into a pool this week and practice.  I think I might actually be pretty good at this swimming thing, if I can only get my breathing worked out.

On another note, today is my twins' third birthday!  I can't believe they're THREE!!  I'm going to bake them a cake this afternoon.

You are so close to having this swim thing all figured out.  I think when it comes to swimming our bodies can only do so much at "one time".... it seems it learns in sections ! LOL  Like it will fiure out  arms and then forget legs etc.......lol at least it's taht way fo rme.

Happy bday to your bitties !! (my friends way of saying itty bitty kids)......lol

Swimming doesn't come naturally to a human body, so it's really hard to learn everything at once. At first I was really struggling to breathe and found it hard to work on anything else. Then, I'd try to focus on another part of my stroke and the breathing would go back to heck. Eventually if you keep at it, it can start to all come to together. It a beautiful thing when you experience it!

Wow, twins. Have a fun day with them!

I had ITB issues in my early 30's from rowing crew (you have to push a little bit sideways and the lopsidedness just didn't work with my body) and worked with a physical therapist on stretches, strengthening exercises and electro-stimulation. There was no pushing nor pulling nor poking involved once the diagnosis was made and it helped me a lot. I still have the wandering pain that Dan described, but if I stretch and strengthen it never goes so far as to keep me from my next run. It does make the one I'm on pretty miserable, though!

Go, see what they want to do, and make it clear that you're concerned they'll make it worse before they make it better. They should listen and if they don't walk away.

Good luck,
Trish

NoSit - 2009-01-26 10:05 AM Good morning everyone! Nicole: Conspicuous = OUTSTANDING! Sorry I've been away so long - work's been crazy busy. I'm trying to get a grad student out the door with a thesis and she's a very slow writer - wants to discuss every sentence, it feels like! But, we're getting there. I didn't realize it had been more than a week since I've seen you all! I have been training and I'll update my logs today or tomorrow and catch up with everyone. I got my 7 mile run in yesterday and today's my rest day so I'm taking a visiting friend to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I'll check in later! Have a great Monday, hope those tickers are all moving! Trish

I'm really glad I don't have any meeting today!

Trish, what's your area of research? When I was writing my thesis (yeast genetics) I think it was my advisor who wanted to discuss every line. Still, we got it written and defended in less than two months.

I do environmental research on concentrated livestock operations. Basically, I collect waste materials to see what could be moving from the operation to the environment, then make recommendations to producers about what they can do to make that problem better. This student is working specifically on salt in the dairy waste stream and she's just very immature and lacks confidence. Although, now that you mention it, it's definitely partly her advisor, too. I'm just the lab manager, but I do a fair bit of drafting of research papers, too. It's sad, but I kind of prefer an arrogant in the research environment - at least I can wash my hands of the situation and walk away when they don't listen to me! These needy kids just suck me right in ...

Well, I'll just go for a run and then I'll feel better!

Julee, I'm glad you like the SportCount.

The snow was already starting to accumulate when I got up this morning so I decided to skip the run and stay inside and do Pilates. I'm not getting in the strong month of running that I had planned. Oh well.

I am not sure if I have ever had a week go as planned, never mind a whole month. All of your cycling is a great base for the running too, and the strong core that you will build with the Pilates is also a great support (no pun intended ) and an important piece of keeping form when you are fatigued.

Personally, I love running when it's snowing- especially on a weekend morning when there aren't a lot of people out. It often seems magical. But speed and tempo sessions do go out the window as you have to be mindful of your footing. With the potential for slippery roads and out-of control cars, it would also be pretty important to ensure that you have a sidewalk or pathway to run on.

Hopefully the accumulation isn't crazy and you can get out later in the week!

My frame of mind is to always want to know what is going on with my body if it isn't functioning properly. What do you have to lose? Start by talking with them, relay your concerns as well as your athletic goals and they should be able to work within those parameters. If not, find someone else who will work with you not on you. Let us know!

Yvonne...how are those aerobars working? I want to buy my daughter some...is there anything special that I should know? I dont have them and know nothing about them...except they are very good for endurance races..which are flat. Nice run today. Is Linkin your dog?

The bars are great! Just when you think you have the seat perfectly positioned for road- it does have to move to accomodate the new position. I believe the hubby said typically seat moves forward and up. In terms of other specs...I will ask my bike dude aka hubby and get back to you. Definitely a huge help for endurance but I believe the biggest advantage is air resistance- apparently something like 40% of your resistance on the bike is your body! So if you can get in an aero position it does help reduce that even for shorter distances.

And yes...Linkin (named after Linkin Park) is my dear chocolate lab. No kids in our house so he is completely spoiled and runs the joint. I did manage to upload some pics into an album but will try to attach one here too.
