Impressive workout, I might have to steal some of those exercises for my pushup/core routine

golfpro - 2010-01-11 6:33 PM Thanks it is a hell of a workout on the core- I was hurting! How r u coming along?
Trin2bfast - 2010-01-10 7:29 PMWOW! I am not sure if I am more impressed by the 7 egg white sandwich or the P90X workout. I have done the Ab Ripper X workout & that is a true blue ab/core burning workout, so I am sure the others are just as challenging. Great job knocking it out & then gettin' in a run later. Good Training day!

Well hopefully you've already swam today but I'll answer ya anyways

For a new swimmer most of your yardage should be drills and stroke work. Probably even more than the workout you gave or mine. I'd say either workout would work but put more drills and focus on stroke.

Houstonrider - 2010-01-11 10:59 AM Evondo (or anyone else who knows the answer),

As a new swimmer would this work out benefit me (your speed workout) or should I still just work on my stroke and being effective at this point?

Today is my off day but I think I may swim today to get an extra swim work out in this week. Below is the work out I was going to follow? Should I scrap this one and follow yours?

Warm up

2 x 100m Any Stroke (even pace), rest 0:20 / 100m
Swim your choice of stroke at a steady pace.

Build up (repeat 8 times)

1 x 25m Long Dog, rest 0:10 / 25m
Arms pull under water, completing the propulsion phase of the Freestyle stroke. Hands return to the start position under the water. Hold your head in a Freestyle position.
1 x 25m Single Arm (arm by side) 6 x left, 6 x right, 6 x full stroke, rest 0:10 / 25m
Freestyle using one arm at a time, focusing on shoulder and hip rotation. Complete 6 arm strokes with the left arm followed by 6 strokes with the right arm. The non-stroking arm is held loosely by your side.

Core

4 x 100m Freestyle Swim, leave on 02:10 / 100m
Freestyle swim, starting every 100m set on the defined time period. The departure time combines your swimming target time and rest time, so the faster you go the more rest you will have. Conversely, the slower you swim, the less rest time you will have.
4 x 100m Freestyle Swim, leave on 02:05 / 100m
Freestyle swim, starting every 100m set on the defined time period. The departure time combines your swimming target time and rest time, so the faster you go the more rest you will have. Conversely, the slower you swim, the less rest time you will have.
8 x 50m Freestyle Swim, leave on 01:06 / 50m
Freestyle swim, starting every 50m set on the defined time period. The departure time combines your swimming target time and rest time, so the faster you go the more rest you will have. Conversely, the slower you swim, the less rest time you will have.

Warm down

4 x 50m Easy Any Stroke, rest 0:15 / 50m
Swim your choice of stroke, at a slow, relaxed pace.

evondo - 2010-01-11 10:31 AM Stuck in meetings all AM, blah! Here's a speed workout for everyone, I'm going to switch up the types as we go along so you can get an idea of what each type of workout should be like...
Speed WO (1700 or 2200)
WU: 1x200 swim
WU: 1x200 sidekick/swim 50
WU: 8x25 15" rest (evens - fast / odds - easy)
Main: Repeat 2 times (1700) or 3 times (2200)
Main: 2x25 10" rest (1 easy / 1 fast)
Main: 2x50 20" rest (1 easy / 1 fast)
Main: 2x75 30" rest (1 easy / 1 fast)
Main: 2x100 45" rest (1 easy / 1 fast)
Main: Rest 1'
WD: 1x100 easy
For the fast, try to keep the stroke count low... you don't swim fast by pulling fast you swim fast by pulling strong. Difference between my all out sprint turn over and 1 mile turn over is around 1-2 strokes per length.

gavisk - 2010-01-11 9:47 AM Wonder where Eric is this morning.  I'm anxious to see this week's Evondo Weekly Swim Workout.

I am sure Keri agrees and appreciates the thoughts and prayers.  We have known about our friends challenge for a few weeks now but only this weekend did we come realize how quickly this trip needs to happen.  I am running for more than just my PR Sunday.

golfpro - 2010-01-11 6:20 PM Keri- My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your friends.
KelliD - 2010-01-10 2:08 PMI'm so sorry to hear about this Keri!  My thoughts & prayers are with you guys, as well as your friend & her family.  It's really great of you to be with them during this tough time.

KeriKadi - 2010-01-11 12:48 PM If you have seen Ken's recent log you'll know I am not going to do the half.

We have great friends who now live in CT, he is one of Ken's best friends and she is one of mine.  She was present at the birth of my last two children and I was there when her daughter was born (we are both homebirthers), our children are great friends.  Stephanie is pregnant with #4 and due in March but has received news that this baby will not be able to live outside the womb.
Her husband is flying some friends to be with her in CT next weekend.  We will do a Mother's Blessing for her (we have all done these for each other in the past) but of course this one will be more difficult.  They have chosen to continue carrying the child until God decides when she should be born.  We will all be celebrating Amelia Rose and grieving her at the same time.  I would appreciate any thoughts and or prayers you could send our way.

This won't be easy.  I don't like being away from Ken and my own children and obviously I will miss the half but I know my place is with her, there will be other halfs.

So if you guys could keep track of Ken and help him maintain his sanity while I am gone and check on him after the race I would really appreciate it.

Mine's pretty simple.  For Tri's, pack everything up the night before.  Resist temptation to be Mary Poppins and bring too much stuff in bag, although several people have benefited from me having extra goggles, socks etc.  Up early and eat a bagel with peanut butter and a banana.  Top off with a couple of fig newtons and a cup of coffee.

Sip on sports drink enroute to race venue. I like to get to transition early and set up.  Air in tires, then scope out transition exits/entrances.  I try to spend a good bit of time orienting myself as I have been "lost in transition" a couple of times.

Find porta potties. Track down race buddies if they didn't drive in with me.  Hit porta potties again.  Maybe a third time if nervous. No onepiece tri-suits in my future.

What I don't do, and know that I should, is a warm-up swim.  That is one of my resolutions for races this year.  Get wet before the gun goes off.

For running races, nothing special.  Same food routine, maybe minus the newtons.   No warm up run.  I'm slow and use the first mile or so of the race as my warm-up.

My race day routine starts the night before.  I make sure that I have everything packed in the bag by checking off things on the checklist.  I also prepare the peanut butter and banana sandwiches the night before...this allows a little extra sleep time in the morning.

The morning of the race I will get up and fix a cup of coffee.  I will usually have a sports drink or water on the drive to the race.  I save the sandwich until about an hour to and hour and half before race time.  If I eat too early then I do not have enough energy for the race.

I will set up my transition area...remembering to lay the race belt with number out, because I have forgotten this before.  Once I have everything laid out I make sure I know where to enter/exit transition for each leg of the race.  I will sip on a sports drink while waiting for the start of the race and I will do some light stretching.  There is also about a 100 to 200 warm-up swim for me.  I like to get in the water before the race so I know what to expect...this is also when I pick out something to sight off of.

Good luck and have fun this weekend everyone.

I usually have everything ready to go the night before, with a list of everything that is coming with me on top of my race bag (it helps with my race OCD). I usually give the list a once over first thing then have breakfast which is almost always a bagel with peanut butter, banana and a gatorade chaser. If it's a race I'm nervous about I'll listen to my ipod while I give the bike and/or race gear a once over. I/we (depending on whether Charlie is coming with me) load the car and head out. Once I arrive at the race site I set up in transition, check out the layout, get body marked, then pop a piece of mint gum, sip on water and relax. 30-45 minutes before the start I get rid of the gum, do a little warm up, stretch, have a gel and get ready to go.

Subject: Breathing question
Eric, one of the issues my swim coach pointed out to me last summer is that I have a tendency to exhale steadily throughout my strokes until the next breath, rather than exhaling quickly right before inhaling. He suggested that it's making me sink too much between breaths. The problem is that if I try to breathe that way, I get out of breath more quickly and have to breathe every two strokes instead of every three, and breathing on one side seems to have adverse effects on my rotation in the water. Exhaling quickly also doesn't seem as rhythmic, somehow. Do you think it's worth it to keep practicing at holding my breath until right before the next inhale? Does it aid oxygen availability in any way?

Here is my morning workout for today-

WU- 1000
Main - "Loco" Swims - 1350
Similar to what Eric posted yesterday but this one is non-stop and the easy ones are used as recovery
CD - 200 Easy swim
Total = 2550

In re: to transition set up- I am still a 'Newby" at it- I have done pretty much the same as others have posted-
* - check the list vs what I have on the back pack
* - Eat at least three hours before gun/horn goes off
* - set transition and place everything in space allocated and arrange in order of how I will put on
* - go over a couple of times mentally each transition
* - last but not least -check bike tires/ clear bike comp /
* - hit the P.John - more than a few times (old farts usually hit it four times) :D
* - walk to start (warm up in start area) and staying relaxed

Still trying to lear "NUTRITION" before race day. It is a constant battle but one I hope to have under control when the big one gets here. In my last HIM I made the mistake of taking in two bottles of recovery drink (more like endurox or heed) by the time I got of the bike and was half way on the run, I thought I was going to die do to GI issues.

I do need to start ASAP with drinking the hammer stuff and getting them under the belt to see if it does help.

Have a great day everyone- hopefully this afternoon I will have a chance at biking, if not- it will be a short run.

Peace Out!

Thomas

I wouldn't recommend that kind of breathing pattern at all, normally people have trouble breathing out slowly like you are and their breaths take too long and cause a pause in the stroke.  Personally I breath out slowly throughout the stroke and exhale everything as I start my rotation to breath. If you are actually sinking because of breathing out you probably need to work on your body rotation and positioning, not holding your breath.

Went for my afternoon ride and at 32 miles (about 50 yards from where I was hit last month) I "thought" a car was going to pull out in front of me. I panicked, over reacted, and went down hard. The car stopped and apologized and asked if I was ok. I said it was my fault and I over reacted. She was very worried and more upset than I. In a sense I'm glad I got this out of the way now, since the accident I haven't enjoyed my rides much. I just need to learn to ride and relax again.  At least I got 32 in and average 18.4.

Ouch!! on the road rash- glad you are ok.. I had one of those a few months ago, and the following three days after hitting the asphalt hard, I was sore and black and blue, and my hip hurt like a mother... I fell when I was in aero position and I turned to see behind and by the time I turned around, I had lost control and found myself kissing the asphalt with my whole left side and did a superman stretch on the road and onto the wet morning grass. I was motionless for about three minutes, biting my lower lip and with my hands I was pulling the turf out of someone's yard. Glad you r ok and getting to enjoy the rides again.

Look at you sporting that bike short tan.  I imagine your brain will take a bit to settle down and go back to your usual relaxed frame of mind.  Glad this accident was just a mental one and no actual car hit you.  You'll settle down again soon enough.

Calgary yes, but I love Halifax.  I am from NB originally but spent my last few years in Halifax and still miss it.  There are many reasons I am staying here in the states but I would take Halifax any day if I could, even given the snow and rain and cold.  Or maybe I have been gone so long I just forget

Would it be wrong of me to point out I have one more day to my weekend?  I am loving this warm dry training I managed to get this weekend here in Tucson.  I am so moving here (and then I can cross off another goal).  One more day here then back to rainy Oregon (and a 4AM wake up on Tue for masters swim)

Not wrong, but perhaps insensitive.Kiss  Hee, Hee. Seriously, enjoy Tucson.  I love Arizona!!!!  Do visit in July so you can calibrate the summer weather.  I kept oven mits in my car (for touching the steering wheel) during the summer when I lived in Scottsdale.

Yeah, I know summer will be a whole different ball game but I'd rather have a few months of intense heat instead of 8 months of constant rain.  I'll have to remember the oven mitt trick

Justine that looks like some nasty battle scars. I'm glad you're ok, maybe you can milk it a little with the wife and kids and get breakfast in bed or something.. Just a thought.-I'm in the process of learning the chi running technique and finally had a big break through today. I ran a little over 7.5 miles mainly concentrating on core and hip rotation and foot placement and as a result had a great run. PR on HR for this distance and more importantly my knee felt great. I did notice that if I deviated from the form my HR would increase and my knee would feel a little off but once I concentrated on the technique it would feel better and my HR would lower. It was a great experience.

Thank you all so much for your inspires and messages.

I am bouncing between submerging myself in what this week will bring and pulling myself back to taking care of myself and my family.  So many raw emotions right now.  Succuming and stuffing, back and forth all day long.  I ate like crap today.  Hoping for a good night sleep.  Thinking I'd really like to get into the pool tomorrow.  Maybe if the girls and I can get our school work done I can manage to get to the pool by 10 since it closes at 11, should be warm enough which is a blessing.

I did notice that if I deviated from the form my HR would increase and my knee would feel a little off but once I concentrated on the technique it would feel better and my HR would lower. It was a great experience.

That's great! I've been thinking of getting that book might have to pull the trigger. Offseason is the perfect time to work on technique before building volume.

trying1 - 2010-01-12 8:58 PM Justine that looks like some nasty battle scars. I'm glad you're ok, maybe you can milk it a little with the wife and kids and get breakfast in bed or something.. Glad you are moderatly ok. A few battle scars to brag about later on.

Nichole What?!!??! You are complaining about bare shots on here. Are you getting sick?

Nicole83 - 2010-01-12 4:30 PM Justine- glad you're OK!  But you gotta warn a girl when you're going to put up a near bare a.ss shot.  Some of us look at this at work ya know.

Hi everyone.  It's been an insane week for me but just wanted to pop in and say hey.  Eric, don't punish me (as you're clearly trying to do already), but I don't know that I'm going to get pool workouts in this week.  I will try, but I've got a lot going on.  The group shouldn't suffer because I'm lazy.

Happy Tuesday ya'll.
