Bah!  I feel as though the fates are working against me.  I've heard that the greatest challenge is getting to the start line healthy but I thought that was for ironman races!  Not HIM's!

I took two days off last week and my body started to feel the stress of my training.  Then raced and was so sore in the calves and my foot.  Finally started getting back to normal this week and this morning I did a face plant on the concrete!  Mostly feel okay - just a lot of scratches though shoulder is sore.  Biggest pain is my left hand.  It's shredded and slathered with Tagaderm right now.  How will I ride my bike this weekend like this?  It's so sore and a mess!  I booked us a weekend away at this resort near the hilly Centurion bike course all so that I could get one last good hilly training ride in... So frustrating!  Okay - I'll stop the pity party!  It could be far worse.

You are trained to the death.  You rammed through a 12-hour training week, then an OLY race with only a little taper, and jumped right back into training the next day.   I would definitely take at least two of the next five days off and just focus on the quality of the workouts you continue to do.  You're just about to taper for the HIM so pretty soon you're really going to feel like hell, but you've put in a great eight months.  The DC bucket is full, just don't get any more injured and tip it over!!

I guess I just don't *feel* ready.  I don't feel I have had any continuous long swims in the 2000m mark.  I haven't gone for a long 100k hilly ride in a while.  And my running has been mostly flat terrain.  And in a few short weeks I have to put it all together and this is my last week of high volume training so there's that bit of panic.  Like I don't want to taper-type panic but I guess that's normal and it's good to rest up.  I am still going to try and squeeze in that ride tomorrow if I can.  I just have to be careful and THEN I promise to back it off.  Here I am whining about some scrapes and bruises and look at YOU giving me advice - Mr. I had to give up my whole race season [BLUSH].  I hope you are feeling better.  Looks as though you are back up and at em a bit!

You don't have any continuous 2000m swims because THEY ARE BORING AS HELL.  Those long continuous swims in pools are all about mental strength...just decide one day during your warm up, "screw it, I'm tossing my training plan for the day and swimming for 45 minutes straight."  From my (very!) limited understanding of swimming, those long continuous swims don't help your fitness any and tend to allow your form to break down from mental fatigue, which is why training plans rarely have more than one or two of them, and they specifically say, "2500m continuous swim, mental toughness day."

And go hammer that bike tomorrow...enjoy the last long training ride!

Just an update, DC team:

PT is progressing very well, and I've only been scolded once by my PT for doing something I wasn't supposed to be doing.  The main focus for the first 10 days post surgery was just trying to get the swelling down and some passive ROM.  These last 9-10 days we've been focusing on increasing the ROM, working on core strength, and teaching my hip, quad, hamstring, and tendons to all work together correctly.  It's pretty amazing how much atrophy has occurred, both from the six weeks since I stopped running/biking and the time after surgery.  My left quad is about 2/3 the size of my right one right now, but it's starting to gain some strength again.  He says I'm going to have a quad like a soccer player when I'm done.  I told him, "no, thanks, those guys are sissy whiners." Tongue out

Knee swelling is down probably like 50% or so.  I'm dealing with a bit of patella tendonitis now but PT says that's normal from the stress I'm putting on it, both from my bad gait and from the weak quad muscles.

It's really wild to see how your body does things just naturally, like how the timing of all of your muscles firing just to take a normal step.  It's amazing we don't hurt ourselves more often with the bad form that many of us have.  I'm taking this opportunity to re-train everything, including my pedal stroke since I'm busting out a whopping 42 watts right now during my warm-ups.  Since I really can't use my left quad much yet, I'm really focusing on pulling up my leg with my core (realizing the position's all whacked but hopefully it should translate).  I'm also doing a LOT of core work, and I can swim with a pull buoy with no pain (LOVE the pull buoy...I could swim all day with that thing).

I've also taken some time to really focus on my job recently (when I'm not researching Dr. Internet on how to heal quicker Smile) which is starting to yield some results.  My wife and I are so lucky to have good, stable jobs in this economy, and I get to work out of my house so I have the flexibility to train, take my daughter to school, or whatever.  I've also realized from watching others in PT that I'm really lucky to be in my early-40s with minimal injury up until now, and still have long, healthy life in front of me.

I am going to miss the Baltimore Half-Marathon, though.  It was my first "big-time" race back in '07 and I've done it ever since, almost breaking 1:50 last year.  I thought, maybe, just maybe, if I could start running by mid-September, I could run/walk it or something.  Then I realized how stupid that was, and that my goal should be "get fully recovered, whenever that is" and go from there.  Funny how injury recovery doesn't conform to our schedules, huh?  We'll get 'er done eventually.

I've signed up for Eagleman 70.3 next June.  When I started doing triathlons, that race was considered my Mecca.  I can handle heat, it's flat as a pancake (good for us Clyde's) and it's only freakin' 90 minutes from my house.  Other than the almost $300 entry fee (OUCH!!) it's perfect.  And EVERYONE around here does it.  I can't wait to start the training.

Happy Friday everyone!!

Glad to hear the recovery is going well and gives you some ideal time to evaluate form!

I concur with Mike.  Sometimes the best gains are made from properly resting and recovering.  Sounds like your body was telling you that it was ready for some rest.  Don't sweat losing a workout or two, what matters is the total volume over the long haul.  You will be well prepared for your event.

I agree, it's good to hear you're healing.  When you are finishing your HIM next year it will be all the more meaningfull.  It's good to hear you taking a big picture look at your life and being thankful for what you have and focusing on what you can control at this point.  No doubt in my mind you will be back stronger than ever next year!

I am getting close to IM Wisconsin.  Hope to get in a longer ride tomorrow, weather dependent.  I rode the course last weekend and felt pretty good.  Ready for my taper to start and get to the starting line.

I was in contact with the forum moderators and I can't advertise/post about my fundraising efforts on the forum, but I can update my signature line    I do understand their views as a site of this magnitude would be innudated with requests.

Good morning everyone!  Hope everyone had a good weekend and training went well.  Curious about how George's race went!!

I have some questions about my upcoming race... Just wondering - do they send you a package before that gives you all the deets?  There are things I've heard about but am hoping someone will clarify for me before race day.  Just wondering how this will differ from a typical triathlon.  Things like - we have to put our bike in transition a day before?  There are wetsuit strippers, bottle exchange stations (how does that work? Do we bring our crappy bottles? Do we get ours back?)...  Do I need to worry about special needs or is that for a full ironman.  Any of these weird quirky procedures that apply to HIM but not other races - if you have the time - I'd love it if someone could explain and walk me through the transitions/process...

I'm still unsure of what I will even wear (such a girl eh?).  What the temperature will be like in September - I guess I'll bring arm warmers... a light shell in the event of rain?  I realized after my oly that I hate my new tri top during the run portion - I was wearing a race belt and it kept riding up and something was rubbing my side.   The girl I met says she's wearing her cycling shorts and now I'm seriously contemplating it.  I have yet to ride a 100km in my tri shorts and am not looking forward to it.  But I have yet to run/swim in my cycling shorts.  Hubby and I were joking that I should soak in the bath tub and then go for a run in them LOL  I just want to be really really comfy!!

Hey Marcia.  They will post an Athelete Guide shortly.  All your questions will be answered in that Athlete Guide.

In the Muskoka race thread link I would imagine someone should know the typical weather for this race.

I would suggest wearing your tri shorts for the entire race as there are no change tents.  DO NOT WEAR your cycling shorts for the swim and then bike/run.  That would not be a good idea.  Worse case, wear swim bottoms for the swim and then change into cycling shorts for the run in a port-a-potty.  And then change into tri shorts/ running shorts again after the bike.

Personally, I say just wear tri-shorts start to fitness.  You'll be surprised how much more you can tolerate during a race.  Remember, you'll be nicely tapered so your butt and quads will feel good for at least the first half of the bike.  You probably will only be in some minor discomfort the last 10 to 15 miles of the bike.  On your next few Bike rides, wear your tri shorts and see.

George is racing this weekend!!!  Good luck George!
Anyone else getting out there?

Thanks. I raced, finished and had a good day overall. I struggled a bit at times and was a little slower than last year, but that is okay. I blame the heat, humidity and the residual effect from Lake Placid. I mean it could not possibly be that I was just slower. No way!!

Let's see. DC has given you some good advice already so I will try not to duplicate. In short, do not wear your bike shorts for the swim. Not a good idea. Do not wear them on the run. For a race of this distance, I would wear a tri top and shorts and make it work. As for the rest and for the things that the athletes guide will not address, here goes. A 70.3 is a pretty typical tri. You will not have special needs bags. You may or may not have wetsuit strippers. They should tell you this up front. I do not believe there are bottle exchange stations. Their are aid stations. You will get bottles of water and say gatorade from them. You will likely discard your bottles and not see them again unless you are carrying your own nutrition. The only thing you will probably need to check in advance will be your bike. Most races allow you to have access to your bike the morning of the race though, so you can bring your nutrition, clothing, and such in and get it organized.

You asked about transition/process so I will offer up the following. I will start by telling you that you can ask 10 different people and get 9 different answers about stuff. So, do what makes sense to you. I am not an expert on such matter. I have tried many things and have made plenty of mistakes along the way. That is part of the process. Do not get all caught up with what others are doing (some girl said she was wearing her bike shorts...so I thought?). And, stay flexible. Things might not (read here they will not) go exactly as planned. Do not look at race day as a time to try something new. Use what you have used in training...clothing, nutrition, etc. Your meal the night before should be something that you are pretty comfortable with. Try to keep things simple.

Other than that, you will likely find your 70.3 very similar to your Oly as it pertains to the specifics of the transitions. If you have specific questions, then fire away. If you want specifics as to how I run my prerace/transition process, zip me a PM and I will share.

Get some Glide and put it on the spots you think might/will rub.

Thanks for all the advice everyone!

Well - it would appear the countdown is ON!  Last night I got an email from Deerhurst resort (race site):

"Dear Subaru Muskoka Ironman 70.3 Guest,

After months of rigourous training and anticipation, the big day will soon be here. While you've been working hard to prepare for the Subaru Muskoka Ironman 70.3..."

I have to say my heart started racing... it's not a dream... I really DID sign up for this beast!!!  Crazy nervous excitement!!  Strangely... I feel ready ha ha.  I have no clue how the swim/run will go.  I think the swim will be slow but I'm a pretty slow strong swimmer and there's not much to stop me from finishing it. I swim with cramps all the time so... hope I'm not jinxing myself!!  The run is unknown.  Apparently it's a hilly beast but I can always switch to run:walk intervals if I have to so... we'll see.

Hope everyone is having a good week!!  Hump day!

Ironman Wisconsin is becoming more of a reality.  The athletes guide is out and I got my bib #.  I am # 169.

Less than a week until taper starts, looking forward to it.  Now I just have to learn to control my eating over the next few weeks.  I am down to my race weight, 190 lbs, and hope to stay there through the taper period.

what are good areas to put glide on? I just bought a stick and am just applying by the ankles and wrist.  what areas would help when stripping off wetsuit?

Oooo...I'm excited to hear about your race. I'm trying to decide if I should take the plunge and sign up for a 70.3 next yr.  Should I???

This has been a good training week for me.

got up at 5:30 twice this week (wed and friday) and went running, felt good

will be doing 1800 training swim during lunch and this weekend will be riding.

I did an ocean swim a couple of weeks ago and surprisingly it went well, it was pretty calm water but I felt good.

hope everyone is having a great week.

Glide is used to prevent chaffing, use it around the neck, shoulders, lats and maybe the inner thighs.  It can also be used to help the wetsuit slide off but is primarily for preventing chaffing.  As you get some distance in your wetsuit you will begin to feel where it chaffs, this is where to apply.

Simply put:  You've done the training and as a result you will have a good Race.  It's guaranteed.  And if there are some steep climbs on the Run, power-walk them.  The Run the downhill.  As long as you are moving forward your are moving toward the finish line.  You are going to have a great Race.

Less than a week until taper starts, looking forward to it.  Now I just have to learn to control my eating over the next few weeks.  I am down to my race weight, 190 lbs, and hope to stay there through the taper period.

Controlling the eating the last few weeks is always tough! We can get away with over-eating during Peak Training but then when we taper our training volume decreases but the appetite stays the same.  However, I always like to carbo-load a little Wednesday thru Friday during Race Week.

Greg, you too are going to have a great Race cause once again: You Put in the Training!!!  It's so damn simple.  You get OUT what you put IN

I've very rarely seen someone undertrain and genuinely have a good race.  And just the same, it's rare that someone puts in quality training but has a terrible race.  Marcia and Greg, you have both consistently Worked Hard Hard Consistent Work.  That's the Top-Secret Magic Forumla for racing to your potential.

Hump day!

Simply put:  You've done the training and as a result you will have a good Race.  It's guaranteed.  And if there are some steep climbs on the Run, power-walk them.  The Run the downhill.  As long as you are moving forward your are moving toward the finish line.  You are going to have a great Race.
I thought at this point I'd feel sick with nerves but instead feel crazy excited. I'm in a place with fantastic hilly roads that are perfect for run training this final week and a lake for OWS. It's great! I've also become an emotional sap much like you and Rene were before your races ha ha. I hope you, Ted and everyone else are staying safe with Irene in town!

IRENE HAS LEFT THE BUILDING!!  She is gone baby gone.  Good riddance.  Amazingly I have power, but many Long Islanders are in the dark.

So I go to Cancun and a freakin' hurricane hits Maryland.  Unbelievable.

We talked to my neighbor via e-mail and we're still without power, but the house is fine.

We NEVER go on the internet here but we needed to know what the heck was going on.

Vacation is great...have a great week everyone!!

I know more people without power than with power right now.  For all the news reports that say the hurricane wasn't as bad as expected, they haven't driven around Long Island and parts of upstate NY.  My in-laws, four sister-in-laws, brother-in-law, and half my friends are without power right now from the east-end of Long Island up to Westchester NY.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Cancun!! Damn I'm jealous!!!

We got off pretty easy probably because of the undergound utilities but the rest of my town got hit pretty hard.

Well it looks like I will be getting a few unexpected perks come race day at IM WI.  I received an e-mail from IM and they notified us that all the selective service slot members are getting the following:

??- Low bib numbers, immediately following the pros

-  Special color coded bibs identifying us as first responders/military

- Premier transition rack location, adjacent to the pros (this will actually save me 3-4 minutes!)

- Highlighted recognition in the IM WI Official Race Program

Kind of a neat surprise all in all.  I am most excited about the rack location as it will make up some time for me.  Probably enough to cover a few bathroom breaks  I was hoping they would allow us to start the swim with the pros, that would be a huge benefit as I would be clear of the masses.

11 Days till go time.
