I passed the International Triathlon Coaching Association certification test yesterday.  Hard test.  Lots of particular anatomy questions.   But got through it.   Need to do a CPR course and I'm a coach.  I have so much to learn.  My plan is to work with my coach the rest of the year learning how he does my plan and then take on a couple of friends for free in winter to make an annual plan for them.  Meanwhile I'm going to do some more courses....working with the plus sized people like I was and the older folks and see if I can help some people find the joy I've found in this lifestyle.

Not doing Racine.  Saved the money for the new bike.  I expect that today or tomorrow.

Good things happening here.

That's great Scott.  Best of luck on the new endevour.  Your friends are very lucky.

A little horn-tooting here.  I got my first AG win last weekend, belatedly.  Just got an email from the RD saying they messed it up and will send a plaque and a gift card (bikeshop sponsored race Smile).  I thought something was a little wonky when I recognized the fella on the 1st place podium for M35-39.  I recognized him because I passed him 1/4 mile from the finish on the run and there was only one wave for all men.  It was a tri for charity and they manually timed it to save money for the charity that otherwise would have been spent on chip timing, so I wasn't going to stomp my feet and cry "foul".  There were only 5 guys in my AG, but a "W" is a "W".  Kona, here I come!!!!

That is great. Congrats!

Congrats Bill!  Way to go!

I do some 5K's that either do their own timing or don't time at all in an effort to give more to charity.  Frustrates my competitive nature some, but I understand and try to have more fun at these races.

Been a bit quiet here this week, myself included.  Been busy at work this week.

Getting some training in despite the shoulder issue.  Mostly trainer rides with a little fast walking on the treadmill once in a while.

How is everyone else doing?  I know Carla has her IM coming up in a week and a half, who else with upcoming races?

Yes, it's definitely quieted down in here. I guess all the folks are busy training...

I'm racing a sprint on Sunday. Gonna make it a father's day tradition, along with drinking a gallon of my signature Sangria.  I've lost my mind a little and may end up racing something every weekend through the summer.  I might just challenge the paperboy to a time trial if I see him cruising the neighborhood Tongue out

Also, I ordered one of those crazy helmets to hold me over since I'm deferring power and wheels for now (I don't know how long I can exercise this kind of control though...)

Nevermind - Ordered a Quarq.  Oh Boy.  My wife is going to kill me but 25% off today only...They see this sucker coming from a mile away.

Meulen - 2012-06-10 7:22 PM DJ.....you have no idea how jealous I am of where you live right now!

Enjoy your vacation and recovery time Brian!

LOL!!  You hit a great weekend...actually! On Sunday, it was VERY windy in the morning, but as the day gone on, it was perfect.   However, on Tues-Thurs, it has hit high temps at 108...bleh...no wonder why I'm staying inside!

This weekend is CRAZY filled with so many different rides. I haven't decided which ones to do, but I may hit River Mountain Trail. 36 mi trail route Henderson/Boulder City where no roads can touch. There are three major hills "3 Sisters" or "3 B**ches" depending on which direction - clockwise or counterclockwise. Ladies Brunch by the Bike Shop (seriously, it's called Bike Shop...a LBS), Beginner Mountain Bike, and a few other rides. Argh! Decisions decisions decisions!

Had a bit of a bad day today...nothing terrible.  Drove to the pool for my free month of lessons, and ran thru the stop sign by accident. It was so dark (4:40a), and I was trying to pay attention to find where the pool building was that I missed the sign (I haven't gone this way in over a year and half, so I'm not familiar with the area). Got pulled over and handed a big fat ticket...wow. That's a lot of money just for running through a stop sign.  Not sure if I'll go fight it or find Ticket Busters and see if they can reduce the cost of my ticket and go to traffic school so I don't have to worry about points on my licence.   I don't mind if I have to pay $50 for a ticket, but not something that'll cost me a wetsuit! Couldn't use my charms to get out of a ticket. D*mn.

THEN - Arrived at the pool, and saw my favorite goggles' seal is funky...whoops. Left it in my car for a day...the heat of Vegas caused it to get warped. It's only 4 or 5 swims old! Po'd at myself.

Lastly - We were told to do flip turns, and I was at my last flip turn, and I must have been a little tired that I flipped sideways and smacked my ankle on the "plastic pool floaty thingys" that divides the lanes. Nice.

All of this before 6:30am. Oy vey.  Where's my Chai tea? I'm just going to curl up and read a book.

I'm currently reading Chrissie's book.  I like it so far, but I'm just a little bored with her talking about her job as a civil servant/international development.  It seems to jump with the years, and I can't seem to get the stories straight because she goes forward, then back, then forward...not sure if it's just me.  It does make an interesting read so far.

DJ - sorry about the rough start to the day. Hopeully it got better. It sounds like you have some fun rides to choose from this weekend. If you ever have a few minutes to kill, I'd love to here about some rides you like in your area (not trails, I'm strictly a roadie for now). I go to Vegas once a year in the Spring. This year was my first as a bike rider and I rented one from Mcghee's (?) To ride around the Red Rock park. I loved it and would like to try some more pretty rides in 2013.

I vote for 3 b**ches!

I think all traffic violations should be overlooked for people heading to pre-dawn swims.  I mean really, how much of a danger can you be at that time of day.

I have done the same thing with the goggles, even leaving them in the bag stuffed in the wrong spot will do that.

I'm with you on Chrissie's book, I am enjoying it and hearing about what she did pre-triathlon is interesting but it does bounce around some.  I am at the chapter where she is about to leave Katmandu I think, or at least she was discussing it when I finished the ride yesterday.

I've got a sprint Sunday morning.  It wil be my second year racing this series, so I'll be able to see how I've improved over a year.  After Florida 70.3, I broke down and hired a coach.  My swim and bike weren't bad but my run and nutrition were terrible.  Everything that I've learned has been either self-taught or learned from here.  I've got IMFL in less than 5 months and I needed a little (I mean a lot) of guidance.  We're focusing on the run a lot more and at least 1 brick a week.  Hopefully I'll see a tremendous amount of improvement by Augusta 70.3.  Good luck to everyone racing this weekend.  Haven't heard much from Carla lately but I'm looking foward to hearing about your IM.

I got the bike.  I'll post a picture when I can.  Sweet ride.  The fitting seemed to go great.  No tension in my back at all.  Good place to start.  Relaxed.  I will ride tomorrow long and give it a good test.

Weekend is a standard one.  Off Friday, ride and run brick Saturday, ride and swim lesson on Sunday.  The semi private lessons in the pool have REALLY helped.  My stroke count is 15 to 18, down from 22 to 24.   Faster.  More aero in the water. Really helps to get someone who knows how to swim to look you over.

I have to get a CPR class in to finish my certification for ITCA.  I have to line that up this weekend, or at least find one that fits the schedule.

Good things happening.

Have a great weekend

Ice.

Good luck this weekend Bill.

Where did you get the Quarq with that discount level?  The best I have seen is 15% and I am still regretting not pulling that trigger.

I ordered it from trisports.com. They list them for MSRP but Thomas Gerlach (spelling?) A trisport sponsored pro posted his increased discount here on BT. It showed as only valid through 6/14 but it can't hurt to ask if they would still honor it. Of course it hasnt landed at my door yet. Who knows? When they quantify the discount, i may find out that i misread some fine print. Can you believe that my LBS wanted 15% MORE than MSRP?

I talked myself into pulling the trigger based on:

1) this is my year to go long, so if I'm every going to care about regulating and improving power output, now is the time. For sprints, who cares what the output is, i just need ramp up the input (effort) as much as i can and see what happens)

2) i basically will have the new and improved SRAM Red group. I would never have shelled out the $ to make that change alone, but i consider it to have some value in the mix. I just need a new front derailer.

3) I've convinced myself that it will have good resale value if i'm not getting eugh use out of it as I hope. That is, if the industry manages to keep such unjustifiable high prices on new units, and if i decide to sell it before the elusive Vector hits the streets.

So now that I'll be getting all this data, I need to learn what to do with it. What do you use for analysis/software? I know you rock a computrainer inside, but there other ways, right? Figured i will just use my garmin 310 outside, and inside if need be. Also, any good training books you recommend? I've heard about a power training book by Pnilip Skiba, but it seems out out of print and hard to find.

There's TONS of rides in Las Vegas. Even though it's called River Mountain Trail, it's all paved. Not exactly tri-bike friendly because it's very curvy,  a couple switch backs, and many rollers, but it's a popular area to ride because it's completely separated from cars. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVjTIz3gwas&feature=related

Valley of Fire is another popular haunt. It's a bit of a drive, but from what I heard (I've missed a few chances to ride due to other commitments!), it's a great ride.

95 to Indian Springs, Henderson to Jean/Goodsprings (very small town!), etc. Way too many to mention here. :-) Will PM you with info on where to ride. :-)

McGhie's - that's my LBS. :-)

Good luck and have fun with the race this weekend.  Assuming you hired a good one, I think having a coach will improve your racing tremendously.

Carla keeps busy on FB, she was posting about shipping her bike out this weekend.

I am a little more jealous of you getting to race in FL last month with Lance being there.  I am afraid the current witch hunt will take him out of the game for a while since they are bound and determined to get him.  And since unfortunately in the anti-doping rules you are guilty until proven innocent and the burden of proof is on the accused, I am fearful that he is going to get railroaded and I wont have that opportunity again.

I am not trying to stir up the pro or con Lance debate, but the process stinks in my opinion.

I use the power tap both in and outside, although my question on where you got the discount was because I have been toying with selling the HED w/power tap so I can use different wheels depending on conditions, training or racing.

The book is a good source, I would also look at using Jorge's bike plan for your bike training for the next couple of months.  It has long weekend rides (builds to 3 hours I think) and good weekday intervals so I think you would be fine to put this in with your swim and run training.  It gives you the testing protocol and the % for the intervals.

For tracking I bought the Training Peaks WTO software, but you can actually just uploaded directly to your BT logs now which is nice via your 310.

I was at her house last night.  I drove up and there she was with her bike on the back of her car giving the bike a detail job. I might hire her to do mine  She seems to be in a good place. She looks great! Has dropped a lot of weight, been doing her training.  I am excited for her.  I will tell her to pop in.

Wesley & All - 8 days until Ironman Coeur d'Alene!!!  Time is moving very quickly and nerves are being activated!

I feel GREAT about my preparation for this Ironman... and in the same breath I am nervous about bringing it all together on Race Day!

My apologies for being absent here... work limits my internet options and my cell phone is not the most efficient way to check posts!

You are ALL in my thoughts and I do glimpse at the email updates of your post as they come through!

I will be wearing an "Athlete Tracker" for the race next Sunday and I will make sure it is posted here.  So if anyone wants to watch me race "Real Time" you can see my actual speed against the terrain of the race course!

Many thanks for your amazing support and motivation to train!!!  I hope to be back in better contact as shortly after this race!

Wishing everyone all the best in your Training and Racing!

Wesley12 - 2012-06-15 7:46 AM I've got a sprint Sunday morning.

Hugs and "See you on the other side!!"

Since odds are that IMFL is out for me (I am still holding to a sliver of hope, but reality is what it is) I started looking for plan B.  Looks like that might be a local marathon late October and I am actually thinking of doing IM Los Cabos, the new one on the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula.  Lots of upside as it is a very nice area of the world, and a great way to get out of the upstate NY weather in mid March.  Just have figure out how to train for it when most of the training would be inside.  Not 100% committed to the idea yet, but the wife is supportive so that's a start.

Happy Fathers Day to all the Dad's in the group!!

Carla - glad to see it all coming together.  I'm looking forward to tracking the race.  So, now has got to be the time for Deep Breaths.

Ken - Cabo would be a fantastic destination race.  It's a wonderful place to go.  If this was a late season race instead of early, I would be shooting to join you.  My wife would definitely prefer it to Tempe, AZ, but accountants don't get to go the Mexico in March Frown

Had a sprint yesterday and it went pretty well.  Unfortunately, I didn't become a strong swimmer in my sleep Saturday night. 46th out of the water, but 15th across the finish line so at least I got to have some fun playing Pole Position on the bike & Run.  Only one position, but 2 whole minutes away from a 3rd place podium.  Those 2 minutes seem like an eternity on a sprint, so need to do a lot of work to bridge that gap.  Felt terrible and dehydrated this morning so skipped my Masters swim (hey, thats not the way to get out of the water faster).

Have a great week everyone!

Great job on the race yesterday Bill!  Now get to the pool Wink

Not sure if doing an IM in March is a good idea when the bulk of my training will be done indoors, but the lure of a warm weather race in the winter is appealing!
