moabrunner - 2009-06-28 10:58 PM Just had a sprint tri today and placed 3rd in my AG and got 26th overall. Everything went well but my swim is my weak point for sure. But I'm happy I placed!

Congrats!

I think some people mentioned this before, but I can't figure out how to search within the 54 pages of this thread...

What cassettes are folks running in IMKY?  I'm thinking of going with 12-25.

I have been training on an 11-26 but put an 11-23 on for local races in May and early June.  I was having a little problem with hills in the races and was wondering what was up. . then I figured out that I need to run the 11-26 unless it is flat flat flat. . .

11-26 for Lville for me.  53/39 in the front.

I've been debating between the 12-25 I've been riding on or switching to a 12-27. I did the BSLT HIM over the weekend, and I felt okay on the hills there, but they did spike up my HR by 10-15 BPM. If I had to choose today, I'd go with the 12-27. Being an unsure 1st timer, I'm planning on staying conservative on the bike to stay alive on the run.

jboeve - 2009-06-30 2:11 PM 61 days!

7 weeks til taper.  Surprised

Rode a century on Saturday.  The first nutrition plan is in the trash.
I tried to supplement calories with a cocktail mix of Sustained Energy and Gu2O, but it wasn't good cold, and was undrinkable hot.  It soured in the 100 heat and stomach problems ensued.  Okay, maybe the oatmeal cream pie and fig newtons at the mile 70 rest stop didn't help, either.
I definately needed less calories.

Plan B will be to go with 2 Gu2O bottles and a water bottle at the start, adding water and GE from the course stations as needed.  Extra calories will come from gels, bars and beans, with a few enduralytes if the heat is where we expect it.  Finishing hungry would be a lot better than the nausea experienced Saturday.

My plan is similar.  Water+GE+gels and a few salt tabs.  This has been working in training, even on hot days.  Hope it keeps working -- there isn't much time left to practice something different!

Speaking of hungry.  I find that I get hungry often during long workouts.  Like my stomach feels empty, hungry.  I eat cliff bars about every 40 minutes, drinking water and gatorade too.  Even a few gels along the way.  Any suggestions on what else I can add or change?  It seems as though I can stomach quite a bit without getting upset so bring it on.

Back to the cassette topic..

Our race wheels are a 12-25 and training wheels are 12-27- yesterday a coach friend(not my coach) who's done IM Lou SRONGLY reccomended putting a 12-27 on to race.  Not wanting to buy a new cassette(the 12-27 I have already needs replaced, so I don't want tojuct swap the 2), I said I'll be fine..but he pretty much said 'do it or you'll sorry'.

Not sure anymore but I guess I'll be using a 12-27 now...

For the people discussing the cassettes, did any of you do the Kansas 70.3 a few weeks ago? If so, in your opinion did you consider that course flat, hilly, rolling, etc. as in comparison to Louisville. I am also assuming that you would have ridden the Louisville course as well for comparison sake.

Thanks for your thoughts.

That is a tough one.  Fiber would make you feel fuller. .but I don't think you want that for your Long rides/Ironman.

Eating is eating. .just eat more to feel fuller.

I did both Kansas and Louisville last year. Kansas is good training for the Louisville course, but Louisville is much more FUN. The scenery is incredible!

Each cog should have a number stamped on it or you can count the teeth on each cog.

I've heard/read people saying that using a drink with protein can help one avoid hunger pangs.  I haven't tried this since I seem to be doing OK with just carbohydrates so far.
