Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I absolutely love the dog pics.... Yes we are iced/snowed in, but I did manage to get some jobs out, and I also made a warm lunch for the Gamer Boyz (my sons friends), they walked over to our house to play xbox and then football in the snow, it was fun to have them here. I'm feeling that pay it forward feeling ! February 4th will start the swimming "class"....... I think it will be drills or something like that> problem is it's at 5:30 and will probably to go 6:30.......... that is dinner time.... may have to do some crock pot dinners eh ?.......lol |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() i haven't caught up on the thread yet, but i was just on my blog, and saw all your inspires, and i just had to get on here and say thanks! i haven't been able to get on here in a couple days, just been BUSY, but it meant so much to me to get on my log and see all the inspires you guys have left!! you guys freaking ROCK, you DO know that right??!? anyway, we've been having some family issues, i won't go in to great detail on here, but i'm taking over the family finances, which are just a MESS, so i've been hip deep in financial nightmare land the last couple of days, but i think i have it mostly straightened out now, so i can spend a little more time on BT! YAY! i haven't run in almost a week, i'm getting ready to go to the dark place, but tomorrow i have a 10K planned (not a race, just a run in my neighborhood that HAPPENS to be 6.2 miles) so if the weather cooperates and we don't get more snow tonight, i should be able to get out tomorrow! yay me! i NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED to run, then i'll be a little more human. ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good morning everyone! I'm sorry about all the cold weather and ice/snow some of you are getting. I need to quit whining about how cold it is here in San Diego (45 right now). It's just that I didn't bring warm enough clothes! I sent all of my cold weather gear home from our ski trip, and all I have is shorts and a light top. Have a great day all! |

It's funny, when I lived in Ridgecrest California (desert), to me 60 was cold ! Then I moved to Southern Indiana, and now I can run in 31 degrees, but under that I'm NOT GOING OUT ! lol My blood must just be thicker now ! lol........... so to me the 40's is a heatwave....... just kinda depends on where you are ! lol In any case, I hope you get to run if you want too......or stay in warm if you do not !! smiles |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yesterday's snow is now covered with ice, as are the cars. The temps are supposed to get over freezing sometime soon and then we're supposed to get rain on and off through the afternoon. So, no outside training for me today. Did a roller session this morning. Trying to work from home but so far haven't done much to justify my salary ;) |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() SNOWED IN AGAIN...we do have power, not like a lot of other people, 80,000 without. I'm going out soon to take the dog on a walk in the snow...we have actually have been advised to stay in and not get out on the roads, the county next to us is under a state of emergency. With the snow I don't know what is going on with the Doctor getting back with us, I do know the blood test was fine, but don't know about the eco.... Lacy is feeling much better as far as energy, weakness in arms and legs....she even got out yesterday in the freezing rain and did a run. I think she had a virus that was undetected....I really don't know about the murmer, or what that is about!? I will make another call to the Doctor today. She seems completely better now to me...do you think a Doctor can make a mistake on hearing a murmer??? I guess the eco will tell the tale. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow chilly temps all over...hope it warms up for everyone soon or at least that you warm up! I had to share the best swim session to date with my tri club. Sadly I can't remember all of the details (an email requesting them has been sent) but it was drill night and while some were pretty tough and made me feel very uncoordinated, the first 50m after the slew of drills was unbelievable! Our coach broke down the stroke into the different phases and then had drills for each. Of what I can remember... 1. sculling- on your stomach, high elbows, figure 8's with lower arm to feel the catch, light kick to help propel you forward 2. side kick- one arm extended, head to arm, turning head slightly to breathe, practice balance 3. 6-3-6- start on one side 6 kicks then pull that extended arm through and then add 3 strokes, finishing on other side for 6 kicks. REPEAT 4. catch up drill- pretty much swim as usual but do not begin next stroke until other one catches up in front of you, really feel the propulsion, as you go through the pull phase, head is looking down at black line 5. fist drill- swim but with closed fist, focus was on extending the pull all the way to the back like a tricep press and rolling as your arm comes up for recovery phase 6. finger-tip drag- as it sounds, emphasizes high elbow on recovery phase instead of windmill arms 7. rock and roll- didn't quite get this one but it was a combination of catch-up and finger tip drag After a warm up, we did 50m of each drill before any other swimming, and it was amazing feeling it all come together. No tennis ball drill but she did emphasize the breathe is not so much turning or lifting the head as it is rolling the body. I would strongly suggest trying out some of these- if you don't understand my explanations (I don't know that I would. Hope you all have a fantastic day! Rest for me! |

I asked a nurse friend of mine....so maybe that is the case...they mistake them?!?! I know my daughter was born with an encaved chest (6 wks premie) luckily she did not have to have any procedures to correct it as she grew up...instead it just gives her a little more cleavage (dont tell her I told you this!) haha but she has had a handful of occasions when they spoke of heart murmurs...but nothing ever came of them. so hang in there Amy...glad your dd is feeling better! have a fun time with them...go out and make a few snow angels and a bt snowman. I've got a trainer, but rollers seem to be the next step. It looks like something I could hurt myself on if I wasn't paying attention. I like to say that a trainer allows you to put your miles/time in but rollers help you to improve your control and pedaling smoothness. Yes, the potential to get hurt is there. My rollers are "parabolic" meaning the ends curve up to form a lip that's supposed to keep you from riding off the end. However, if you ride into them they can slow you down enough that you'll fall over. I ride with a chair along side me to grab for balance but I've still fallen off/over many times. Once I almost ended up in the fireplace. I've gotten to where I can even reach down, grab the bottle for a drink, and get it back without having to stop or fall off. |

Not all murmurs are a cause for concern but I suppose they all need to be evaluated to determine which are and which aren't. The fact that she's been a successful athlete makes it less likely that it's going to be a problem. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() naners - 2009-01-28 2:31 PM I had a drill day this morning as well. Is it just me, or does everyone feel fantastic while doing the catch-up drill? It makes me feel graceful. Here's a fun game to do with catch-up and swim: Swim Golf! Swim one length of the pool, counting strokes and noting your time. Rest for 15-20 seconds while you add up the 2 numbers. (Example: 17 strokes, :20 = 37). Repeat 3x and average your 'scores'. (Obviously, this game is good for people who love mental math!) This is your 'handicap'. Then, swim one length trying to reduce the number of strokes you take by gliding very long in front, before the catch (this is, essentially, catch-up by default). Repeat 3x and average your scores. (Example: 18/:19, 19/:23, 18/:18 = average of 34) Compare this score to your handicap - did you birdie? bogie? improve your handicap? Finally, swim one length trying to increase the number of strokes you take by shortening your glide in front, but try not to shorten your stroke. Repeat 3x and average, then compare to your handicap. How did this work? It's critical that you rest enough between lengths to keep from getting winded. Our swim stroke responds very strongly to the need to breathe (naturally) and it's hard to have any body control when you're out of breath and your face is underwater! Naturally! You might be surprised by the combinations. The game is meant to help you identify the 'optimum' stroke length for your body and level of technical expertise. You can use the stroke counting to check in when you're swimming different distances to see what fatigue does to you (generally, shortens the stroke, but not the glide - this is bad form! Focus on keeping stroke length and lengthening the glide.) It's a lot to think about, but it's fun, too. Trish |

![]() | ![]() I'm IN!!! (Of course I'm home & not training, that's why) Hello everyone, sorry to hear some of you are snowed in! We had some cold weather Monday, but it's getting better. I will have to check out Nalani's blog today! Way to go! I'm really sick with a Lupus flare right now. My vision has cleared up at least. I will get pretty behind on my training except maybe for some swimming this week at the one pool I feel comfortable going to with this rash all over my body (I do wear a barrier cream, which I posted a link to on my blog today--it works REALLY well). Although my joints are not painful right now, my muscles on the right side of my body are all inflamed and painful and I've got pericarditis. And I've got an incompetent rheumatologist who told me I need to drink less water, not buy new socks when I asked her about compression socks. I have new insurance and this is the best they provide me with. My kids are happy and healthy, so is the hubby. I'm frustrated I can't train, but somewhat relieved as if I have a flare now, one just before/during my HIM in May is a little less likely. There's always a bright side, right? Hope everyone else is doing well! Andria |
