Hey team!  I've also been super busy at work lately for some reason.  And I think I'm in need of a little "motivation" - whatever form that may happen to take Laughing.  I skipped my Monday run, did a little less than 3 miles on Tuesday and bailed on last night.  Probably a good thing this is a cutback week, but I still need to get the runs in!  I think I'm just getting bored with running on the TM.  Unfortunately most of the time it's my only option.  I'm looking forward to next month when the LRS starts up with their Tuesday evening social runs.  I won't mind running in the dark as long as I'm with a group.

Happychick - 2009-10-21 6:43 PM I hate to do a drive by (I seriously need to get some homework done and am having issues forcing myself to just do it) but I have to tell someone (since writing it in my log just isn't enough!)  I have always struggled with tempo runs and a friend (Mike/WhatwasIthinking) asked me about it last week.  Well he gave me what I affectionately call "Mike's Tempo Run Directions for Dummies" and it is unbelievable the strides I have made just in the last two weeks!  I'm finding that I am able to run faster than I could have ever thought possible.  This morning I ran a 5 mile tempo run and my best mile was a 7:33 min/mile pace and that was my last one before my cool down!!  Can you tell I'm just a bit excited?!?

Tempo running is the bomb! And the improvements overall that you'll see will have you doubly excited.

In my younger days, in another century, I trained for my fastest marathon doing very long tempo runs during my mid-week long runs. I would warm up for about 3-5 miles, and then run at tempo pace for 10 miles, then cool down for a couple of miles. I ran a 3:50 at Marine Corps that year, and the only reason I didn't go faster is because I had yet to learn pacing and went through the first half in 1:40-something.

Wow, that is great!!  I am really learning to love my tempo runs.  I am having to really concentrate overall on pacing ~ I tend to do the same thing (take off WAAAAY too fast) so it is something I am making an effort to control!

I always hated running in the dark (thank goodness I am able to do it in the morns now) but I have to agree that running with a group would be a whole other story ~ not to mention the extra motivation they would provide!

I used to hate running in the dark, too. But I hated running on the treadmill even more. So, during the winter, my running really suffered. I ended up getting one of those ball caps with the LED lights in the brim, and I run in the dark all the time now with that and my reflective vest. I feel pretty safe. (I also stick to neighborhoods with street lighting.)

ebshot - 2009-10-22 9:58 AM I got my run done.  I decided that instead of heading out to the left of my house, I'd throw on my 'let's not get shot' orange and headed into the forest.  Wow.  I didn't have one car go by and it was absolutely gorgeous.  That being said, wicked hilly!  Ouch.

I miss runs like that...in the forest that is. There's nothing really around here that's quite comparable. Altho, I did notice how pretty the multi-use path was looking with the different colored leaves covering it in places.

I'd taser you, but.... I was going to wog today, but I got home late from work and it was already dark. I hate wogging in the dark, so I didn't go. I'm on track to hit my goal though, so I'll just get a wog in tomorrow. Hopefully, I'll be able to get home before it gets dark....

Yea, it's Friday!!!

A bit later I'll be meeting up with my pal Ginny, for a hill workout, 4 miles probably. She is an experienced marathoner so I expect to get an woopin'. But that's good for me. She is going to show me a run route that has some hills that I can come back and do again for my training.

A few months ago when she was training for a big race I took her out for a ride, me on my roadie and she on her hybrid. I think I worked her pretty hard on the hills, I'm guessing this will be payback day!

So I have completed my challenge, 100%. I probably didn't add in enough miles, could have been more! I am so bad at judging what to put down for these challenges, either too much or not enough. Oh well, I'm still a part of this team and will post here and encourage y'all till the end!

Hi everyone!  I'm sorry I've been AWOL.  It's been very crazy here -- out of town a bunch, plus I got a new job/promotion at work!  That's actually a blessing and a curse.  It's certainly the job I've been working for all of my career, but now I actually have to DO it!  But I've kept running as a stress reliever, thank goodness.

I'm trying to shed some of the pressures I've put on myself, and came to the conclusion this week that I'm not going to run the half marathon on Nov 21st.  It felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders when I made that decision, which was really based on the realization that there is no way I could be sufficiently trained for it.  I'm not giving up on running or racing, and I'm even still planning to do a half marathon but not until March.  But I may fall short on my challenge goal this month...

I hope everyone has a fabulous weekend.  I'm racing tomorrow -- a 5K -- anyone else?  I'm sure you are, but I haven't had a chance to go back and read previous posts.

Alas, it appears my quest for the NYC marathon has ended. I tried my best. I knew the abbreviated training was a long shot, but after my 20 miler last weekend, the muscle on the outside of my hip is just shot. I tried running yesterday as it was starting to feel better, but right away it flared up and today, it feels much worse again. Who knows, maybe a divine miracle will occur, so I won't cancel until the last possible moment. I've done NYC 4x before, so it's not like it's any great loss - just that I had a nice starting position plus this was going to be my last NYC because of the logistical nightmares. If I defer to next year, I gotta worry about it all over again. Not looking forward to that.

Dee - how do I handle my goal in the challenge? I was right on track when this occurred.

jeepers creepers running Reapers.... I'm back!  I think!

After more than a week of illness I went for a "slow and short" run today.  Well, I did keep it short, but my pace was faster than my "slow"  Hurrah!  I feel better!

Hopefully I'll still feel better a few hours from now, but it is nice to even feel like putting running shoes on!!

Sorry to hear about your hip....

For the challenge, you can revise your goal according to formula:
(Original goal) x (Days of participation) / (31 days) = Revised goal

So, for you, it would be:
(130 miles) x (22 days of participation) / (31 days) = 92 miles

Howdy, howdy, running reapers!  Sorry I haven't been able to post much the last few days - been busy, busy.  I'm still running, running.  And apparently I've had too much coffee, coffee and it's making me talk like Gus from Cinderella.  It's either that or work is making me crazy, crazy.

Anyhow - hope every one had a fabulous week and has an even more fabulous weekend!

I love my team! You all are so fun to read!  So I just got back from shopping, as in 6+ hours of shopping/walking!! Got a few great bargains and even fit size 6 jeans, woo hoo.   Now I have to honor my no excuses promise.....going to make a few laps of my neighborhood running with my hubby's hat that has lights in the brim....if I can find it!  There is a cosmo in the freezer for motivation.  Will report back later!!

Happy Friday creepy reapers!

I have decided to go ahead and run my race tomorrow. So far, the foot has been manageable. I think if I warm up thoroughly, once I get going it will be fine.

After, I will ice and rest. And that may be my last run until next Saturday (another race...a duathlon I roped my hubby into doing with me, so I can't bail).  I will decide tomorrow (in consult with my coach) how much more running, if any I'll be doing and then revise my goal if needed (based on Dee's formula).

Anyway...I'm still looking forward to a good race tomorrow.

Good luck everyone else who is racing this weekend!

Hey guys.  Long day here.  Lots of doctor appointments.  Saw a GREAT doctor for Cole (pediatrician) and she gave us a STRONG recommendation for the program we are applying for.  Hopefully the insurance will cooperate with us and pay for some equipment we need.  Then Liam's audiology appt was interesting.  The audiologist checked his ears and immediately sent us up to ENT.  His ears were totally compacted with wax.  Ick.  So, after a major cleaning from the ENT, we went back and Liam has perfect hearing!  We just have to see the ENT periodically for cleanings.  Sweet!  Big relief!
