For those who have done IMAZ before - is there any place better than others for sending friends and family for their viewing pleasure of the race? I've read before that for the swim the best view is from the bridge, but as I'm not sure they'll even be up that early, where should I tell them to go watch the bike and/or run? Also, is there parking for spectators? Am I blind and just not see it on the IMAZ website? Thanks for any suggestions! Oh... and are we going to try and meet up during the dinner? Or maybe at the swim? Or...? I'd love to meet some other BTers Parking for spectators is available in several garages near transition. The earlier you show, the closer the garage!!! If any of your family is volunteering you will get a voucher for parking. Specators line up around the bike turnaround on Rio Salado...that way they can see you 3 times. I made my family bright tie dyed T shirts so I could pick them out of the crowd. Anywhere along the lake during the run is great for family. Mine popped out several times on the run in various spots. Made my day especially on loop 3!!!! I have a condo that is only 2 blocks from transition on W Lakeside( across from Tempe Performing Art Center). I am planning on having a get together on Thurs from 4-7pm. I will post the address and phone number as we get closer. I will have munchies and stuff to drink...I would do dinner but I know that alot of people are careful of what they eat leading up to race day so will just stick with munchies for now. It would be fun to get together! Anyone interested?
Sounds great...im interested |

Extreme Veteran 495 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread bar92 - 2012-10-22 8:14 AM I looked at your log- sounds like a really tough ride! I think you can expect race day to feel easy by comparison. WTG for sticking it out- that was a big deposit in the training bank that will pay off on Nov. 18!I'm interested MAV. Can the rest of us bring anything to help out?
Did another century ride yesterday. Ugghhh. The wind, crappy roads, etc. are starting to make me question my cycling ability. I will be SO happy to have smooth roads to race on. I've done an IM before, so I know mentally I can do the distances. Had to keep reminding myself yesterday while fighting to go 7mph that "this is just a training ride". Like the rest of you, I'm ready to get through this last hard week and start taper. |

Thanks - Chris Could not tell you ------- did not go to it last year. Plenty of restaurants to hit up in Tempe in walking distance from IM Village. I have not heard the best things about the welcome dinner, but since I have not personally been there, my opinion is pretty much worthless. |

Thanks - Chris I have gone to the banquet. The food is pretty awful. It was held outdoors on the lawn near Tempe Performing Arts Center. It got pretty cold after the sun went down. I think if its your first IM its great to go to get the "vibe" of the whole experience. They have some video on the screen...they recognize people who have raised a lot of funds, lost a lot of weight, the oldest competitor, the youngest...I am not sure how old your kids are, but if they are under 10 they will be bored!!! I was with friends and it was fun to just feel the excitement. I wont be going this time. |

I have 1 more 2+ hour run this week, and then 1 more 80+ mile ride with a 5 mile run off the bike this weekend. And then I taper! Just have to make it through Sunday. I keep repeating that to myself. I'm excited for the reduced volume but not for the taper crazies to set in...."I think I'm getting sick! My calf hurts! I'm injured! I didn't train enough!" Etc.... |

This is my first IM so a 3 week taper seems long. I know I need it but I'll be thinking 'won't I do better if I just train a little more?'. I think it will take as much dedication to taper as it has to train |

Expert 885 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I've got one more big weekend as well and then taper officially starts. However, the first weekend of taper is a 4 hour ride Saturday and a 2 hour run Sunday. Still a good workout, but less than what it's been. Once I hit taper, none of my weekday workouts are over an hour, so definitely looking forward to that. Jorgito, I'll be at the dinner/athlete meeting because we have someone in our group who is doing her first. We can talk more as we get closer about meeting. |

I'm on the same boat with workouts, I missed last weeks big brick but did get in the long run, so I'm super motivated this week, and my Aero Wheels just came in so trying to get this long ride in on them. I hope to feel a difference. as for the meeting sounds good Bar92. |

Extreme Veteran 601 Cold Spring, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Pardon the long post. I've got a question for anyone who has done this race and tracks power, or any long race and likes to crunch numbers. I started training with power this summer and I would love to come up with reasonable expectations for IMAZ. I have done two HIMs with a PM and here are the facts (no laughing at my power numbers...Okay, maybe a chuckle). My issue is that none of the races by me look anything like AZ. None of my training rides do either, especially when you deal with stoplights. HIM1 Avg Pwr 158 Norm Pwr 175 Speed 17.3mph Elev change 3,179 Other - Not too windy, nice weather. Overall good day! HIM2 Avg Pwr 156 Norm Pwr 172 Speed 16.3mph Elev change 3,458 Other - Windy, wet, nasty. Did a decent amount of braking when I wish I was speeding. I know that there are a lot of variables (WIND) that make this a guessing game...but, based on recent training I think I can hold about 145 watts over 112 miles. Maybe 150 watts if tapering is all it is cracked up to be. I weigh 155lbs. My setup is pretty aero (60/90 wheels, a goofy helmet, etc) and I can hold my not-very-aggressive aero position for at least most of the ride. Thoughts? |

Regular 108 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I train on flat, windy terrain. I'm 195#. My 5-6 hour rides at 160 watts yield 18-19 mph depending on the day. My last HIM I rode 180 watts and averaged 19.6mph.
Your two HIM races were hilly. Holding constant power is very different from "peaky" power on a hilly course. AZ should have you down on your bars with steady power the whole time. I think those 300-400watt spikes that it takes to climb hills burns a lot of matches. |
