Glad you got a good run in Jason.  Sorry to hear about the 24-hour shift.  Ugh.  Stay strong!

Jimmy/Jason-nice job getting the running in on such busy schedules.  The next few days at work will be busy for me as well.  Should be able to get my workouts in.

Oh well, back to work. Hope everyone has a good day.

Oh, by the way. I have the all clear to get a new bike and I am going to do it. My old bike is more than good enough but this isn't about need, it's about want. I am getting a completely unexpected windfall from work and instead of doing something smart like making an extra mortgage payment, I am going to buy a new bike.

I was at the shop yesterday and we were comparing the fit coordinates of my current set up to what is available out there. I think I can get a bike that will fit very close to my current ride with minimal spacers, stem extensions, etc. It should be slightly more aero--I currently have several spacers up front-- and infinitely more cool. Can't wait. I think I am going to order it tomorrow when I get off this shift.

My current tri bike is going to get drop bars on it and brifters to convert to a road setup for group rides.

Anyways. Probably not a sensible purchase but I am excited about it.

Sorry, I was being coy. I am going to go with the Shiv. If it was good enough for Crowie then it should be OK for me. I will try not to embarrass the bike. Trying to decide which build to go with. I would love to go DI2 but that is some crazy money.

Lots of things to catch up on! The wife and kids were gone for a little over a week. Instead of training a lot and relaxing I worked on the master bathroom! Needless to say I didn't get a single workout in with the exception of playing some racquetball.

I am now back in the groove! July 15th is the next Olympic distance triathlon. I think I am better prepared than for the last Olympic and got a few extra OWS in.

Jason, so jealous of the new bike!!! I was just listening to the Zen Tri podcast and he was interviewing Jesse Thomas, and he was saying he's now riding a Shiv and loves it.

On another note, I just reached 10,450m of swimming this month, which is my new best total I'm living the dream right now, no school and no commitments: so it's wake up, workout, lunch, workout (unless it's a run day, then just one workout), then try to have dinner ready for the wife when she gets home. My current swim total seems ironic since my next race on the 14th is just a 250m pool swim, but I'm getting ready for an Oly in October.

New bike....drool.Smile

Shiv is a nice bike!  When I was purchasing, it was between that and the Speed Concept.  The SC fit me better so I went with it.  Both companies (Trek and Specialized) are very solid, IMO -- I've always found Specialized gear to be very well conceived.  (There was a defect in a tire I once got from Specialized, but customer service in that case was awesome, and defects happen.)

Jason-a new bike is so good on so many levels.  My wife gave me the go ahead in Dec. 2010.  With one child starting college this year and another next year she said if I was going to get one I better do it or wait 5+ years.  A new bike is a great way to put some extra spark in your bike training.  For me, I didn't want to be the "slow old guy with the nice bike" that everyone was passing.  Lots of good groups out there that all get the job done.  When I bought my bike at All3Sports in Atlanta they had 3 different bikes outfitted with Di2 for a "discounted" price.  Did the fit and then we ran the numbers to find out the best option.  I ended up with a Blue Triad SL with Di2.  The Di2 is amazing.  It probably does not make me any faster but it is so crisp and solid on the shifts.  I'm not a great mechanic so I really like how easy it is to adjust the derailleurs when swapping wheels....it essentially adjusts itself.  Don't try the Di2 unless you are prepared to buy it.  I love it. Shiv is very cool...congrats!

Jamie-good job on the training.  Sounds like you are enjoying your time off.

Michael/d3-you been keeping up with Euro?  Going to be able to watch the game tomorrow?

So... I can see this Strava thing being my new addiction.  I did a ride today and, without really knowing where the 'official' segments were (but guessing), I went hard on the hills.  I got KOM on one, 5th on another (9th on another but got slowed by a car).  So, as silly and juvenile as it sounds, I'm going out tomorrow to turn 5th into 1st, if I can.  Lol.  I feel like a child.  I guess whatever gets you out the door is good.

Working on the house -- while not in any way tri-specific -- can be really hard work.  My wife and I completely refurbished a house about 14 years ago ad the summer we did that was probably the hardest (physically) I've every worked for an extended period of time, including training for IM.

What did you do to the bathroom?

Nice job on the swimming.  Keep it up!  250m pool swim -- sounds like my kind of race...

The Half Rev in October should be great.  I'm considering the race as well.  If we both end up there, I look forward to meeting you (in person)!

Hey Brian-you are welcome to join in with us.  Good to hear from you.

Jason - I'm excited for you.  I looked at the Shiv a while ago.  I know it's the engine that matters most, but for me having a new bike is a great way to give me yet another reason to get out and ride even more.  I love my toys.  I currently have 5 bikes in my mini- fleet.  Be sure to post pics!!

Hope to get a run in tonight.  It's going to be a long day with meeting after work going till 9-10 pm.

Have a great day all!

Randy - I was able to watch all the games so far and I will not miss the game this afternoon! Go Germany! (The only downside to this match today ... Germany never beat Italy in a major tournament!)

Michael - I worked hard on the bathroom but since I didn't have much time my nutrition was pretty bad ... there is this guy selling the best bratwurst in front of our Lowes ... can't ignore that when you leave the store. I refinished all the cabinets and other furniture in the bathroom. Primed and painted the walls, re-caulked the entire bathroom, put new grout between all tiles, changed all the hardware, added some hardware and so on ... every free minute I had was put into that. Now the wife is back and she loves the bathroom so much that she wants to redo the rest of the house.

Jamie - Gotta love the Zen Tri podcast!

Worked out twice almost every day this week ... getting back on track! What is everybody else up to?

ITALIA!!!

Hope you all are having a great day. My son is finally back to his old self, so took the kids to the beach yesterday. We hadn't left the house much in days. Was really nice.

I look forward to getting back to training. I feel like I've lost fitness and gained 20 pounds being holed up in the house!

If it had come down to Germany vs Spain, I would have cheered Germany on... after I kicked everything in the house for Italy losing, of course.

I'm going for Spain, just because I was pulling for them when I was just there. I'd feel hypocritical if I didn't.

I have to get a run in today, but I'm really struggling with motivation because it's so hot outside...I could go to the gym and use the treadmill, but 40 minutes on the treadmill doesn't seem like a better choice. Oh well, suck it up...Cool

Hey gang-had a great run tonight.  Legs finally felt fresh.  Schedule was for an easy run but after starting easy and continuing to have to try and slow pace I said screw it and just ran.  Felt surprisingly good considering the pace.  Hopefully, this is a good sign with Chattanooga 10 days out.  My legs were toasted as of last Sunday and I was having doubts about being able to complete a decent run come race day.  Still more work to do but tonight's run definitely helped my confidence.

US Olympic Track and Field Trials are on NBC Sports Network tonight from 9-11est. Several good distance events. 5000 finals, 1500 prelims and finals of the steeplechase.  Its not the regular NBC. I have Direct TV and its around channel 603 or so.

Was not able to see either of the Euro semis.  Son said Germany played poorly. They looked really solid in the games I saw.  Should be a good final but I have to give the edge to Spain.  Looking forward to watching it.

Glad to hear about the running Randy.  I managed 5 miles tonight with no ankle pain, so that's a good sign.  I can't say that my legs were fresh though -- this Strava thing is going to KILL me!  Ha ha.  I'm thinking of a 3-day taper for Chattanooga -- I can't let it eat too much into my already veryquestionable IM training.

The heat is starting to pick up!  We hit 100 today.  They are now saying 106 for tomorrow and 108 for Saturday.  Lovely.

Michael-I've heard alot of talk about Strava but have resisted looking into it.  I'm afraid of finding something else that I become obsessed with.

For those of you that train with power what sort of % of FTP do you shoot for in an olympic distance race?

Jim brought up something that made me curious.....How many bikes do you currently have? (Jim..Harleys dont count!)   I mean your bikes...not kids bikes, spouse bikes etc.  To take it one step further if you could have 1 more bike what would it be?  I'll go first.  I have my tri bike that I do all of my riding on (Blue Triad SL). Another tri bike  (aluminum frame Cervelo P1 that I need to clean up and sell) and a 15 year old aluminum Trek mountain bike that I rarely use.  If I could have another bike it would be a titanium road bike with Di2....might even be willing to try out some bike races with a frame like that
