Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() jenputnam - 2012-05-16 9:10 PM Here's the link to the hike from the garmin. If you zoom out on the sat image you can see where I was in relation to Pike's Peak and Garden of the God's. Basically the section of red rock is the North side of the Garden of the God's formations. I love that on the main page it looks like your elevation was pretty much completely flat. All at around 6,500ft+, but flat nonetheless. It's only when you go onto the player that you can see the reality of the elevation... I loved living in Colorado. It's pretty around where we live now, but Colorado was stunning. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I rode some intervals (only two) because there were many cyclists today at the Lake doing the "ride of silence", so I decided it wasn't safe. Still got a nice warmup so 1:01'35" in the bag. - Andy: S 7 / B 9 / R 9 /Rest Days 2 ; Total = 25 ; 21:19'33" Edited by ernestov 2012-05-16 8:05 PM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() jenputnam - 2012-05-16 8:55 AM Hey Everyone! Jackie- I am so sorry to hear about what happened. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. I am happy to read your race reports though and be inspired to keep pushing on. To chime in on some earlier discussions- Eating on the bike- Scott's friend in England who is a monster on the bike swears by Pro Bar. Scott and I tried them when we went skiing and they were really easy to eat tasted great! They make an old fashion PB&J! I have been training but didn't update my log the past few days. No excuses other than my laptop is very touchy these days and I need to keep it from dying! Today I am going on an am Hike that I am really looking forward to and then this afternoon I'll get on the trainer if I can't get outside. Not sure I'll run today, guess the hike will let me know! Ernesto- Given the short time till my Tri, how do you suggest I train on the bike? 17.2 miles and the course is said to be flat and fast, nothing like my training area. Yesterday I used the trainer to do 30minutes steady effort at an aerobic level. Like I mentioned before, I am using this race and a C race to just get me competing again. Any advice would be great. Jennie, Put miles outdoors, too much time indoors on the drainer and a big hiatus in the middle... You could probably use more saddle time than anything. Don't try too much high end stuff, the elevation changes in your area are enough of an interval. For the race, you're pretty much in survival mode since the training is simply not there. Go easy, relax and enjoy. If you try to fight it will not be fun. |

![]() | ![]() Question Gabe: Do you ever smoke cigars? I haven't had one for at least six months, thinking they wouldn't do my training any good, but I broke down tonight and went to the store. But it was closed for the evening! Too late! So everyone, is a cigar or two a week really that bad for fitness? |

@Chris: I guess it might depend on if you smoke them or just puff on them. If you're inhaling I would say yes, smoking a cigar or two a week messes with your fitness. Putting all that crap in your lungs is certainly not helping matters |

So everyone, is a cigar or two a week really that bad for fitness? Last year about two months before IMTX I went to try out the course on the bike with four other teammates, after we rode 108 miles and ran a little brick, we stopped by the Hotel and then went to check out the transition area. To my surprise, while we were there, two of my teammates were smoking CIGARETTES!!!!! It turns out they are occasional smokers! Can you freaking believe it? I'm talking guys that race an IM in less than 12 hours. |

My last three runs have all been really easy and a lot easier to keep my heart rate down at faster paces. Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I would think that a cigar or cigarette would have to do a little damage. It may be that small that you don't notice it but I would not make a habit. I use to smoke cigarette 10 years or so ago and still will have the occasion weekend binge (don't ask me why) on holidays and I can feel it on the Monday. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() - Exciting day today! I registered for the race, had fun at the expo meeting triathletes from different places and got in a run and a bike ride. My bib # 2115 - Chris, I rarely smoke cigars so not a good person to tell you their effects on performance - Ernesto and Jackie, I had problems with my cell/Int'l roaming but promise to call you both tomorrow to touch base! Today, 51 min run + 44 min bike ride

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 12k run this morning, 1:06. Cigarettes... people who smoke and train probably have smoked prior to taking up sport, so good on them for being active. They most likely smoke much less than before. My cousin took up running few years ago while being a chain smoker (a surgery to remove tumour in his stomach woke him up) . While running his first marathon he stopped few times to have a cigarette! Eventually he quit smoking altogether and still runs 2-4 marathons each year! Just finished one in Prague last weekend with 4:19. Here's the update: - Andy: S 7 / B 9 / R 9 /Rest Days 2 ; Total = 25 ; 21:19'33" |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Morning everyone! So my plan called for a 1:30 bike followed by a 30' run. I went to bed shortly after 9pm so I would be able to wake at 4am to fit this in but of course I forgot my bike was still in the front hall, then I couldn't find my shoes etc etc. By the time I finally got on the bike I had to shorten both workouts to get it all in. Such a bummer to wake that early and still not accomplish the goal!! Anyway -hoping to fit a swim in on my lunch. Hope everyone has a great day!! - Mitch: S 4 / B 11 / R 12 / Rest Days 2 ; Total = 27 ; 18:21'57" |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ernesto- Taking your advice and pulling my bike off the trainer and heading outside. Couldn't ride yesterday due to road closures from high school graduation. Next week will be the same because of the tightened security due to the Academy graduation and the President's arrival. Heading to the pool once I get everyone fed and out the door, then an afternoon ride. |

I haven't had one for at least six months, thinking they wouldn't do my training any good, but I broke down tonight and went to the store. But it was closed for the evening! Too late! So everyone, is a cigar or two a week really that bad for fitness? With the Grove right there close to you, the temptation is too good to sit down in a nice lounge and enjoy a fine one. Here's my take on it, I probably smoke a few cigars/month while on the golf course or working outside around the house, or that rare moment when I have a free evening with good weather: I don't inhale cigars, so they won't have such an ill effect on my lungs and aerobic capacity. Now, if I were to go to a lounge I feel as though I'm breathing in a ton of second-hand cigar smoke which I think will have an effect. Those are my thoughts, probably not a popular view here, so I'll throw on my flame-proof asbestos underwear now... |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was a pack a day smoker in college. Girlfriend at the time (now my wife) insisted I quit. Was a pretty nasty habit. Will admit that some cool mornings it would be nice to sit outside with a cup of joe and have a smoke. But, I'll gladly choose a 12 mile run instead. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Did you ever wake up in the morning and say "what did I do Last night?" Well I am having one of those days. Last night at 11:30 PM I signed up to do my first marathon, this Sunday! No, I was not planning it or considering it, I just saw there was a race that goes from Midland MI to Bay City Sunday morning checked with my wife, who responded with a puzzeled "if thats what you want to do." Then I signed up with 30 minutes before on-line cut off. Goal: Its my first one so I just want to finish. The marathon prognositcator's (thanks Chris) put me somewhere between 4 and 4:30 for a finish time. But its like I said its my first and I just want to finish, preferably in front of the walkers. It is a Qualifier for Boston, but I don't see me finishing in 3:25. Plan: I was thinking a run/walk plan basically running aid station to aid station, it looks like they are every two miles. Nutrition: light breakfast, Oatmeal with nutella and peanut butter, cliff bar 30 minutes prior, gell 15 minutes before then one every 45 minutes, drink at every aid station. Other: body glide for chafing and waterproof band aids (thanks Chris) for those special areas. Besides the obvious (What the heck am I thinking, I wasn't training for this), what do I need to know and what am I missing? and yes this morning I am crapping my pants over this. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sounds like you've nailed the most important issues. PACE yourself!! 26.2 is a LONG distance to run. Mile 20-26 feels longer than 1-20 so mentally prepare for that. Have fun with it. I have a bunch of friends that will be running that race. Most are trying to BQ. Did you know that it is almost 100% "downhill"? Pretty slight grade, but it's there. Hope the wind is at your back, it can get very windy on that course from what I've been told. Most of all HAVE FUN!! Oh, and welcome to the club! ![]() |
