Originally posted by DeVinci13 I have been lurking since my last post. I did a 100 mile ride this Saturday. Practicing IMWI pace and nutrition/hydration. 5:31, which is right at my goal pace (30km/hr). I am hoping for a sub 6:30 on the bike. Sunday was 1 hour bike followed by 1 hour brick run. My run pace off the bike was 7:43, which is way faster than I want my pace to be. But, it was such a nice sunny day, and I felt good, so I pushed the pace a bit. Everyone that I met had a smile, the dogs were friendly, even the 2 deer at the side of the trail seemed happy. I have been debating about whether to do another IM next year. I was debating doing IM Whistler or IM Mt. Tremblant. I was also thinking about doing IM Cabo San Lucas (Los Cabos). It would be perfect for an all inclusive holiday at the end of winter. But, I am unsure how training would go through the winter. All of my training would be indoors (except running). I hate the indoor trainer now, I can't imagine doing 6 hour training rides inside on the trainer. 6 more weeks until my Ironman. I am getting excited, and nervous. Dwayne

Great training Dwayne!!  You should be able to nail your goal based on your training!

I have heard great things about Mt. Temblant.  When I had to drop out of Florida last year with the shoulder, I looked at Los Cabos as I can use our time share points there and it looked like a nice place to go that time of year.  My wife didn't like that idea though being in a foreign nation that far from home in case something happened and she was all alone.  Although I don't think she should worry about something like that, if it concerns her I wouldn't do it.

You are right though, the bulk of the training would be done inside.  I don't mind that, but it can get old when you get into long sessions.

Have you guys seen some of the new tee shirts IM is selling for family members?  I love the one that says in 140.6 miles I get my husband back!!  I may get one of those for Connie!

IM training is going pretty well. I felt really good about my HIM result, bu now I'm feeling a bit sluggish - coming back from vacation and getting back in the groove of regular training again. Did the entire 112 mile IMWI bike course yesterday and ran for 2+ hours on Saturday. I'm ready for it to be here already mentally, although you still physically wonder if you are ready. Like some others have mentioned the long training weekends are starting to get to me. I'm going to be changing training locations over the next couple weeks so hopefully some new scenery will help.
By the way, Ken I meant to tell you that I like your tattoo. It has me thinking of adding something to the usual M-dot logo also. Perhaps a dairy cow??

One thing I forgot to mention somehow even though I'm super happy about it - I made my Ironman foundation goal of raising $1406.00 in donations for the Wounded Warrior Project today.
And that means that my hair will be shaved off on Thursday. It will be interesting to see what I look like without hair!

That is a great cause and you did a great job raising the money to support it.  Congratulations!!

Good thing for you is that your hair will grow back.  Sadly, due to genetics and age I get to see what I look like without much hair every morning!

Again, great work!!

Great work on riding the course Todd!!  That is a confidence builder!!

Thanks for that tattoo comment, I think I have seen people that work the cow theme into their IM tat.  Google IM tattoos and you will get a lot of ideas!

Maggie-you're almost there, can you believe it?

Becky--your post is very timely! I know how you feel. So I did my 1st 100mile ride yesterday, followed by a 20min run. The weather couldn't have been better, 48 to start warming up to 75, a little wind, but not bad. It was a good ride for the most part, but man, that's just a LONG time to be on a bike. There were times when my back hurt, or my neck hurt, or my butt, or my feet. Not all the time or all at once. It seems like the longer I go, the longer it takes for things to pop up. Last week my foot hurt at mile 77, this week it was 95.

So my question for you all is, when you are riding long rides are you comfortable the entire time or are there points where parts if your body just aren't happy? This may seem like a silly question, but I've never done this sort of bike volume before!

Had 4,000m this am, man this was tough. It wasn't the distance, but after a long day yesterday & even thought I went to bed at 9:25pm, I wanted to go back to bed the entire time I was swimming!

Ali - for my super long rides (60-100) I do have some uncomfortable spots, and usually its my neck or shoulder area. I raised my handlebars just a little bit, and the issues went away. It was because I had my roadie set in an aggressive position, which is perfectly fine for any rides, just not long rides, it probably would be better if I had aerobars, as I'm comfortable in that position for long time.

It takes time for sore spots on your body to get better. The key is to get out of any position for a short time and stretch as you ride. If its something you consistently get without fail, you may want to have a bike fit check-up.

I am trying to get back into the grove of things after being away. Why does coming back have to be so hard?
Here is my race report from Saturday. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp... I had a great time at the race. I know you can't compare your time from one race to the next, because the courses are very different, but this Oly was about 50 minutes faster than my Oly in May! And I finally got my 10k under an hour. Okay, so it was 59:59, but I was excited!
I am thinking of getting a bike fit done to help with my preparations for B2B. I am rather embarrassed to say that it has been years! Would this be a good time to get a fit? My race is Oct. 26.
I hope everyone has a good week!

I enjoyed your race report Karen!  Again, congrats on a great race (and breaking an hour for the 10K)!!

I think getting the bike fit done now is a good idea!  You will have plenty of time to get used to any adjustments and adjust anything that is not working.  It certainly isn't too early, as your position wouldn't change much between now and October.  Don't be embarrassed!  The only reason mine has been done more often is because I am an admitted gear who buys too many bikes.  Embarassed Thankfully my wife is helping me with my condition!

I actually need to get one scheduled for right after my next race and cross my fingers that I can get through the next one.  The bike has really been aggravating my ITB and piriformis lately and it manifests itself in the lower back about 2 hours into the ride.  I think the transporting of the bike has the position off or the extra volume in this position is causing it.  IDK, but it is getting to be annoying to have to stand and stretch so often.

I have an early (5:30 am) conference call tomorrow, one of the time zone challenges of being on the left coast.  It is going to last several hours so I moved the normal Wednesday long run to today and todays rest day to tomorrow.  16 miles at an easy pace and with the cool dry weather here this morning it couldn't have gone any better.  I probably could have drank a bit more and pushed the pace some, but the goal for this one was to finish with consistent splits which I did.

Sounds like everyones training is really coming along nicely!!

If anyone is looking to add power to their training,  Competitive Cyclist is having a pretty good sale.  You can find it here!  I kind of prefer the crank based solution, but before switching I had very good luck with the Power Tap wheels and this price point is pretty good.

Looks like everyone is in full gear prepping for those late summer tri's! And congrats to those of you that have already completed! Since its summer, (it's more like my winter) in Arizona I have reduced my training to only when I want to and it fits my schedule which has had its ups and downs. It was really easy to stop after my Leadman race this spring because I beat myself up so much! Now getting back into things and looking for some advice and help in nutrition. I feel it's very apparent I have no concept or plan to this key component because both tris this spring I fall a part on the run. So, what you're take for nutrition? I don't get GI issues but I was puking on the run. I typically do GU gels and mix a sports drink with water however I don't think I'm taking in the calories necessary. Either miss on or feel good so I end up putting it off longer than scheduled.

Hoale - I'm sure someone can give you more specific advice but I will just say to try taking in more calories/water on the bike if you can handle them. This way you don't start the run in as much of a deficit and most people seem to have a harder time getting stuff down while running. Personally, I find it easier to cut back during the run than to play catch-up.

Karen - great racing.

Everyone else - great training! Your volume scares me...

IMLP - Ken, that wasn't me catching. I worked the night shift at the food tent. The great part was I could see the finish line in the distance and meet all the impressive age groupers afterwards. Got to help out some people who needed the med tent more than the cold pizza. The downside was getting reminded how gross athletes' eating habits can be after a long day like that :-) For housing, I think I'm just going to camp out a few miles out (cheap). When I travel alone, I'm pretty frugal and the idea of sharing a place with other racers doesn't appeal. My hostel days are behind me... Eileen has mentioned maybe going up as a family, but if that happems, we'll probly stay far outside of LP.

Training - not so much. I came home with visions of sugar plums and consistent training in my head. But still can't walk up and down stairs. Maybe tomorrow... I've said "this is the toughest race I ever did" in my head too many times to actually believe it, but this is the toughest recovery I can remember.

Racing - I decided that next year, I'll only pre-register for 2 races, Rev3 quassy half and LP. If other races suit my fancy at the time, than maybe, but no locking them in in advance. I've made a habit of racing more than my training or schedule support, and I'm resolving to turn that around next season. Asfor this season, just gonna keep on racing...

That's my update. Happy training all!

Great race report Karen! Love the award photo, very cool!

Bill, sounds like you have a good plan moving forward and keeping your racing habit under control :-).

Yesterday I decided I wanted to swim a full 2.4 miles in preparation for the IM, and I did it! No stopping, finished in 1:24. At the beginning of the year I was hoping to get to a 1:15 time for the IM, but based on my swim pace, I've adjusted that to a more realistic 1:20. After yesterday's swim, I think I can definitely get close to that! It was so hard to maintain focus and keep track of the laps--my masters swim coach was also keeping track of my laps and giving me a signal for every 1,000 yards, but he also had the class to watch over. I did get tired halfway through, and any time I started to get "lazy" I attempted to pick up the pace, but my shoulders just didn't want to move my arms any faster. But that's okay, I'm happy with the result.

I did skip a run this week, but I'm trying not to worry about it. I'll probably just extend today's brick run a little bit and move on.

It's Hump Day, happy training!

Back home today from a long needed 7 day vacation and what I thought would be rest but for some reason, I never feel rested after vacation. I only ran 5 miles one day, but did swim 4 other days in the ocean. I was happy to be able to swim a mile two of the days and get out of the water feeling good ( I was particularly happy cause I have only been swimming a hand full of times in the last year) One thing that I am glad about is that I enjoy open water swimming more than I like swimming in the pool.

Now I am back and will use this week as a transition week to start the B2B build up this weekend. 12 weeks to go...

Glad you had a good trip Eddie! I know what you mean about not feeling rested after vacation! I was away last week too and am still feeling the effects! I have been tired and going to bed early and I am severely lacking motivation! Thanks for pointing out that B2B is only 12 weeks away! I think you just gave me back my motivation!!
I did the B2B Half last year. I know you posted recently about being nervous. I am incredibly freaked out that it seems to be getting closer so quickly! I'll tell you what I can about the course, maybe it will help you to feel better. The swim, at least last year, was VERY forgiving! I swam 1:37/100. I do not swim anywhere near that fast. My race last weekend, without a wet suit, was 2:40/100. I know that the wetsuit helped a bit at B2B, but not that much. With that said, apparently the tide charts for this year are showing a very slack tide and people are predicting much slower swim paces. But, because of where the swim is, there will be at least some tide to push you along. There is a very long run to T1 through a parking lot and down the road. Seriously think about stashing some shoes near the swim exit - many, many people will do this and I am planning on it this year. I didn't do it last year and it was a hard run! I see that you are from Virginia. I don't know what the terrain is like where you live, but I am from Western PA, and there is not a flat road to be found around here. With that said, to me the bike course was totally flat! There are a few bumps where you go over bridges. On the other hand, I talked to people from Florida after the race and they were complaining that the hills were awful on the bike?! I guess it depends on the area where you train. The only down side is that you do not get a break from pedaling - at all. T2 is indoors but very well organized! The run was again flat! There were a couple little rollers, but again, I think it depends what you train on! I actually enjoyed the run course. I think the hardest part for the Full this year is that the run is 2 loops. I think it will be hard to be so close to the finish line, only to have to turn around and do the run course again! Don't be alarmed by the warning signs for alligators around the lake - I didn't see a single one last year!! If you have any specific questions, please let me know!! Happy training!

Thanks for the info. anything helps... probably one of the reasons I picked the B2B was the forgiving swim. My goal at this point it work my swim up to 2 miles on the lake and at that point the salt water and any current pushing can help with the rest. I have a good plan at this point to build up the miles, but of course plans a great on paper, but getting the workouts in will be the key.

Unplanned rest day for me -- slept through my alarm - dropped the kids at camp and got ready for a recovery ride /run - only got 5 miles from home and my front brakes went! Luckily my husband was with me because I was coming down a steep hill into an intersection - I yelled out to him to stop any cars that might be coming (none thankfully). I thought maybe the cable had snapped - not that luckily - the tension screw that holds the cable somehow come undone (it's actually 2 halves that go around the cable and then a locking nut) - since there was no tension it also locked my front tire as soon as I stopped. Ugh!!

my husband rode back to get the car to pick me up. LBS was completely dumbstruck on how this could have happened - even asking if it was possible to find the missing 1/2 of the screw and locking nut (good luck with that!). They have a temporary solution and are ordering me a new part...this sucks!! Now I'm going to be paranoid about using my front brake.

Trying to find my happy place!

That is a good plan Bill, especially in an IM year.  I have raced more than I liked this year, could have done without the 2nd HIM even though I PR'd it.  It felt like a month of either tapering or recovering.

Don't be surprised if you still get to 1:15 with the draft, and I believe there is a bit of a current there too.  Good swimming Becky!!

Glad you had a good vacation Eddie!

Originally posted by skitri Unplanned rest day for me -- slept through my alarm - dropped the kids at camp and got ready for a recovery ride /run - only got 5 miles from home and my front brakes went!

That is weird that it happened like that!!  Glad you are ok!

I always worry about going over the handle bars so I tend to rely more on my rear brakes.

OMG Maggie, that would have scared the cr*p out of me! So glad you're ok!! I guess you can look at it like it was a freak accident & the likelihood that it will happen again is very slim!

Glad everyone had or is still have good vacations! Ken, good job in getting your LR in. I'm doing mine tomorrow, I've got 3 hrs on the schedule, which means I need to out the door by 4:45am. Early to bed for me! So the way my workouts are scheduled this week, my off day is on Saturday. It's sad, but I'm so excited to have a day off on the weekend!

Bill-good plan on not signing up for a bunch of races next year. Do you think you can stick to it?

Becky-good job on your swim! I know for me, getting in the full distance a few times is a real confidence builder!

Just plugging along, 5 1/2 weeks to go. Can't believe how fast the time is flying by. I feel good though. Glad I've got a few more big weeks to get more training in, but I'm happy with where I'm at right now.
