Up early to get my run in then off to meet my wife at pool for swim...she forgot her goggles/swim cap so we both bailed and sat in the hot tub then went for a quick coffee. Felt a bit like holidays, other than the cold, snowy outside...Will try get a quick swim in before bike tomorrow morning. The 4:20am alarm is painful at times but I think I am getting used to it. Funny how 20 minutes earlier makes such a difference for me(alarm used to be 4:40).

My son has been bugging me about doing weights, so last night we went over a program for him last night along with my daughter. We will be starting that tonight.

We also decided to start daily pushups. We are all starting with 3 sets of 5 pushups every day.

Thank god - I I would still be working on it!

The buoys can be tricky, but with some practice you will get used to it. The only advice I can give is to just keep squeezing, haha.

I know I've complained about our weather here in Baltimore, but I am so happy I do not have to deal with all your snow! and ice! If I had to use an ax and/or a power chisel, I think I would just hide inside until it all melted away. Good luck with all of that! Maybe you should stay inside and skip the rest of your workouts this week :-) You can be a Ravens fan for a week! That's not so bad!

Looks like possible cortisone shot for the knee. PT is sending me out to have it looked at with more mechanized contraptions to make sure he's not missing anything. I've never had anything linger this long before. Hubby is against cortisone shots - because once you start, it never ends. Hmmm

Veggies - had a smoothie this morning and added broccoli to it so I'm at 12/15. I'm liking this challenge because at first I thought it'd be tough but now I'm seeing the variety I'm actually taking in so I'm feeling a little better about food choices.

Someone mentioned Vitamin D - totally use it here. My chiropractor takes 4,000 ius in the winter months - I take 2,000 and feel the benefits. I don't take it everyday - only the cloudy days. Of course we live in 9 months of darkness here in VT (Burlington is apparently the 2nd most cloud-covered city), so depression - or weather induced depression, however you want to look at it is high. Vitamin D seems to give me energy and keep me happy. LOL

That stinks about your knee! Let us know how it goes. And keep killing it with the fruits/veggies! After today I will be 4/15. I'm not very adventurous with my fruits/veggies, but hope to make it to at least 10 by the end of the week.

As for living in darkness, I would not be able to handle it! Glad Vitamin D helps you with that...I may have to start taking it also, at least in the winter.

Bailing on the swim is not cool :-)

But, I've been trying to do abs and push ups every morning while drinking coffee. I'm at 15 a day too (although I do 10 then 5). After our work training last week- I am adding Burpees to the Mix. So 200ish abs (although I have a tailbone injury- so am having to be creative with these right now while it heals), 15 push ups and 10 working up to 20 burpees.

If I can get them done while everyone else is asleep it starts off my day well.

Hey Dave! This will depend on your ankle flexibility - but when I was learning the pull bouy I used to actually cross my ankles to help keep it in place (even on flip turns - and just push with one foot.) Holding it in place alone is a pretty good muscle workout.

I just saw a weather report with us getting close to a foot this weekend. We've been pretty spoiled with a warm winter- so we need the snow for water supply in the summer and to reduce fire danger. We had about 5 inches Sunday that's still on the ground but should melt in time for the new stuff to arrive.

I hope you can get a warm streak- some of the pictures on FB are just crazy of the tunnels people are building. If you get a chance snap a photo of your shoveling work!

Challenge accepted!! The hospital is right around the corner from my craft beer store. I wonder if I can smuggle some in...

Still at the hospital with my oldest. I did a 1000 meter swim workout on Monday and I did 100 pushups this morning in the hospital room, so we'll call that 2 workouts for the week. Hopefully we can get home this afternoon (assuming it has power by then) and I can get a ride in on the trainer.

Got most of my new bike in yesterday (decided to build out a 2008 trek equinox 9.5 frame) and can't wait to get home and get it pieced together so I can start working on my fitting. Used this app (http://doubledogstudios.com/apps/bikefastfit/) last time I fitted my roadie and it worked pretty great. We'll see how it feels on the tri bike. Not a replacement for a bike fitter, but at $4.99 it gets pretty darn close for WAAAAAAAY cheaper.

Also found a great local deal on a wired power meter so I'm excited to get my data into trainingpeaks and dial in my training a bit more.

Hope everyone is thawing out a bit!

However, today started a new week and I took advantage of the day off and the nice weather and headed north to St. Petersburg to explore the Pinellas Trail, a rails to trails project. After a little confusion at the start, I managed to get 41 miles in with only about 4 of those on the roads. I may have found my new favorite route.

along with some pics from today's ride.

Ok can't quote the pics for whatever reason but they are beautiful. I love FL, and the Sunshine Skyway may be my favorite bridge. Was so excited when they built the Zakim Bridge in Boston in the same style during the Big Dig. That one doesn't share the view, or the cool over-the-bay Seven Mile Bridge style highway leading up to it, of course...

BTW actual conversation I had with my neighbor on Sunday, while I was standing on top of a 6 foot snowpile the length of my driveway, shoveling a couple feet of snow off of it to make room for more snow from the driveway:
Neighbor, commenting about this situation 'Its ridiculous that this is even a thing we have to do'
Me 'I'm just going to up and move to Florida'
Neighbor 'Don't even bother selling the house, just go'
Me 'Yup we should all abandon our property as uninhabitable and leave for Florida now'.

We're supposed to get above freezing on Sunday - just in time for freezing rain!!! YEAH!!!!

Had to look this up, never knew Trek had a TT bike. Looks incredibly sexy - can't wait to see pics of the built bike. Yay more bike porn! HAve a soft spot for Treks, as that's what I have.

Oh and I must find these barleywines. My favortie so far has been Sierra Nevada's Bigfoot. One local store has some in the cooler - from 2013! It does age well in case you're the cellaring type. I need to get back there and clean them out

Ok yeah power posting. man I take a couple days off from the forum and you guys blow it up

Sunday my only activity was shoveling, the Y was closed again from the snow. So I finished the week at 7 workouts on Saturday.

This week started last night, I did 1 and 2 of ? - 2 mile run at a zone 2/3 friendly 8:37 pace (if I had more time I would have gone longer, slower, to stay in zone); followed by an hour of boot camp, also taught by my Personal Trainer. Holy. Crap. That may have been the hardest thing I ever did. Every time she has me do a circuit of 3 different exercises, I always figure out which one is my 'recovery' exercise aka the one where I can catch my breath. During a few of the circuits last night I never found one, and during one circuit my recovery exercise was push ups. Actually out of everything I did, push ups were probably my easiest exercise.

Dave - congrats on the car!!! Did you get to take it home already or do you have to wait? My wife went in Monday to pick out a new car as well, unfortunately they need to build it and so we have to wait at least 8 weeks. But then, new black on black Outback with a roof big enough to carry both bikes AND the top box!

Oh yeah fruits and veggies - I'm up to 11 right now, will be 12 after dinner (we're big on our fruits and veggies).
broccoli
blueberries
strawberries
raspberries
cauliflower
green beans
lima beans
tomatoes
peppers
spinach
cranberries

The DC snow day yesterday knocked out all my motivation, and I skipped my scheduled "run" since I had nowhere to do it. I did throw in a Zumba dvd and at least get some cardio going with my roommate.

Swam this morning- managed to do a 1400! I'm still working on going continuously, but I've been using active recovery in my swims and finding I need a lot less down time in between my freestyle endurance laps. Following my plan I'm swimming 100 free and then active recovery 50s with breast or back. It's more fun than gasping at the end of the lane, that's for sure!

Made breakfast this am and got in my 7-10 fruits and veg, with muffin tin eggs/veggies.

Anyone else on Pinterest? I've been doing a lot of athletic/healthy eating pinning lately, you can add me if you'd like! Username: Meltycooks

STORY: I began running about 5-6 years ago, 3 full and 6+ half marathons. Lost my mojo after MCM and kept the couch warm for 8 months. Picked myself up, started running again, then broke my clavicle mountain biking which ate the last 6 months. There are 2-3 tri's that go right by our house and have always wanted to go beyond the run. Have many miles on a bike, swimming is where I need some help. Grew up in the pool yet never competitive swam. I would like to train in open water 2 miles from home, and the same course I would compete on.

FAMILY STATUS: Married, daughter(15), son(11)

CURRENT TRAINING: Trying to get back into it, cold weather is best for chilling beer.

2014 RACES: nada

RACES PLANNED FOR 15: Committed to a half marathon in March. Sprint April?, Oly in September

BEER PREFERENCE: Dark and chewy

WEIGHT LOSS: Probably 10-15 gain from the last year, yet I am 6'4" and weight not much of an issue.

Welcome, John! Good for you for taking the plunge - so to speak. Your past running should have left you with a nice foundation and you'll pick that back up quickly! Do you have a pool nearby to start practicing? Or maybe take a swim lesson or two just to knock some rust off and get the technique piece correct from the get-go?
This is a really nice group of people here and you'll find a wide variety of experiences and beer preferences.... LOL. Everyone has been great at holding each other accountable for workouts, weight loss (if needed), and healthy eating (and drinking). Ask questions - odds are someone here will know the answer!
(oh, I like dark, chewy beers too) yum - chocolate milk.

3/? with a spin on the trainer. Gosh an hour seems like forever on that thing.

Fruits/Veggies: I'm at 19/15 with cherries, red grapes, red peppers, asparagus, and cabbage today (along with many of the others previously mentioned). That should offset the 2 bowls of Lucky Charms I just wolfed down. I picked up "vacation cereal" for the kids for their February vacation which is next week (we don't really get sugar cereals almost ever) and I dug it out and had at it.
I rationalized it would probably be my only shot because once they discover it, it will be gone in two days. LOL

Ack! I'm getting aerobars tomorrow!! I stopped by the LBS and chatted with the guy who did my fitting last summer and he actually recommended Profile Design Jammer GT aerobars as I have a road bike and zero desire to start messing with swapping out seat tubes, etc every other day. Not as sexy as the carbon setups I've seen but I already bought new handlebars last summer (narrower for my female frame) and couldn't justify another set. (in addition to the fact that I've been told by many that carbon bars don't get you that much of a gain for the price point - $ is better spent elsewhere) If anyone has any experience with the Jammer, please let me know - pros and cons! My longest distance races will probably be HIM as I just do not have the time to train for a full at this point.

Cheers all!

Jennifer, I have Jammers and they worked great on my road bike. I got a huge speed gain when I went to them (although I was also training more- so hard to separate out). I got refit with them and it did not change a lot (well I also had a baby between the fittings and I think that changed more). I hope you like them as much as I do. I luckily had a road by my house closed that I spent a lot of time practicing on when I first got them. That was needed for me to get a feel for steering.

The Vote Is In! For all you Floridians (who were probably freezing your butts off - ha ha) there were no hanging chads and the winners were never in doubt. The group thought versions 5 and 6 were the best. So I will attach those to this post.

Next Steps: You will have from Thursday to Saturday to vote for your favorite design - one vote each. Then - once we pick our favorite design - we can make some suggestions on Sunday and Monday. Hopefully by next week, we will be able to order the bike shirts. Does that work for everyone?

I'm hoping I can get a volunteer to do the leg work on finding a place to make the bike shirts. Anyone interested?

Haha! Welcome to my world, Dave! I have been doing all of my swim workouts with a leg buoy until my knee is right! Yup - 2000 yards with it. They do tend to slip out and I yank it back when I'm in a flip turn - makes the turn a bit slow but it's very doable. One of the gyms I go to has a couple different kinds - one side is much thicker than the other side. I put that side toward my front so it's under me while swimming. It wants to float but because the bigger side is under me it's much easier to hold. The regular ones I'm fixing every hundred yards or so as it slips. LOL A pain but my stroke is much more balanced now that's for sure and it's much easier to work on bilateral breathing too.

Thanks for the reply Jenn - I'm wondering if you can answer a few questions for me, as I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to swimming. I had assumed that the purpose of the buoy was force your arms to do more of the work. You mention that the buoy has helped your stroke and your bilateral breathing. How so - what's the actual purpose of the #!*&%! buoy?

I had a great swim last night. Swam 1600m total, started with 200m warmup, 500m with the pull buoy, 100 kick, 100 backstroke, 500 with pull buoy, 100 breaststroke and 100 cool down. I knew it was a good workout, b/c when I walked outside, hair still wet and fresh from my workout, I actually said out loud "ooh it feels nice out here." It was 30 degrees out...

This morning I did some yoga in my living room. I am working on becoming more flexible, b/c my muscles are often extremely tight.

As for fruits/veggies, I am still 4/15, but I made some stew tonight that has onions, carrots, celery, potatoes and garlic (root veggies count too, right? :-), so will be 9/15 by the end of the day. Tomorrow morning I'm going to make a smoothie with strawberries, blueberries and mango, which will put me at 12! I will try to find a way to get those last 3 in.
