Scott - Here's how. Here's the race report.

http://beginnertriathlete.com/RaceLog/races-edit.asp?raceid=281597

I went to my massage therapist and she confirmed that I pulled my achilles - not bad but a tear none the less. Grr. I'm icing it it it's my job.

Hey Jenn - How close are you to pulling the trigger on the season opener. We could do the race and then go to Jack's Abby for lunch! It's the alchemist of MA.

Dave, I don't know if it will be a go - I keep holding out hope. I have a wedding on Mother's Day weekend on the Cape - so I thought, great!, I'll go to the wedding and the season opener - it's perfect! However this year the race is not on that weekend and I don't know that I can get a "kitchen pass" to take off for the weekend. My hubby isn't super psyched I'm doing the full IM from a training time commitment so I'm being careful and walking on eggshells.
Does it fill up or is it something that maybe a few weeks out I could pull the trigger based on feed-back I get here? Tentatively right now I probably have to say no and hope to be pleasantly surprised.

Dave Q, also, I was thinking about training plans. You've got some time to play with. What you could think about doing is taking a 3 on/1 "off" plan and making it a 2/1 plan because you have the time to play with. For example, I'm using the Be Iron Fit program for now - it's a 30 week plan - it increases not more than 10% week over week. Now, I haven't run the numbers, but maybe look into doing a longer but slower ramping plan to stave off injury - maybe increasing by 5% or 8% and doing 2 on/1 "off" so that by the end you will still meet the same numbers but with a longer, easier build? Again, I'd have to run the numbers to figure out exactly when you'd "start," as opposed to 30 weeks out it might be 40. Just thinking.
Actually I just realized I think you're 28 weeks out so that wouldn't work. Ack - back to the draw board!

Congrats on the races, guys!!! So great!!

Considering the poor, sick child (he rebounded very quickly! Yay!) last week was good training-wise. I really bleached the heck out of the house so no one else got sick. So many kids went home from school (17 on Th and 24 on Fri) the school was almost closed!! They brought in extra people to clean the entire school over the weekend - hopefully that's the end of that, goodness.
Anyway, got a 2 hour trainer ride on Sat and an hour run on Sun. Today was a scheduled day off but because of last week and missing 2 days, I went and got beat up at PT (legs are exhausted now!) and did a 1000yds at the pool.
Tomorrow, back on track!
Goals for this week - stay with the plan - 4 runs, 3 bikes, 3 swims
Also PT everyday and to include extra cycling specific exercises he gave me and core work big time. I don't want to passively follow this plan - I really need to focus on each exercise and what it's doing for my strength/body. Every movement has a purpose and I'm trying to focus on technique and the purpose. Just putting the time in doesn't cut it.

DQ, I'll be at the opener (probably at the back), and a trip to Jack's Abbey afterwards sounds mighty tempting.

Which is why I'm doing the Du Well that and I've had exactly 3 pool swims since August at this point and won't be ready for a 1/4 mile even if it was warm.

I still need to sign up (see weekly goals)

Same problem here. I got off to a great start in January, totally fell off the wagon in February, and just as I felt like I had some motivation back at the beginning of the month, I got hit by some crazy cold that had me just exhausted for over a week - I was winded standing for more than 15 minutes or walking up a flight of stairs. I'm better now, and the weather was beautiful yesterday, so I went out for a 2 mile run on my lunch break and wanted to throw up by the end. Turns out after a year and a half of near inactivity you shouldn't resume at your old pace right off the bat! Back it today, maybe with some better pacing...

DQ, good luck with the HM on Sunday. I'm still crossing my fingers that the snow is a joke. I'm supposed to be helping the wife build some new garden beds this weekend, not getting the snow blower back out!

And for a little personal brag, the no-booze, no-sugar thing I'm doing for March with my wife seems to be working: as of this morning I'm down 11 pounds since the 1st.

Now back to lurking!

Congrats on the weight loss! That is awesome!!

Nice job on the HM, guys! Sounds like a lot of fun! DQ, sorry to hear about your achilles!! Heal quickly!

I have been sick the past two days...pretty much every time I see my nephews I am sick the following week. I love them, but they are little germ-bots. Hope to make it to yoga tonight, but will try to work out tomorrow just to get back in the swing and hopefully that will speed up my recovery.

Goals for the week:
- Get healthy quickly!
- Lose at least 1 pound by eating well
- Get in 2 runs and 2 swims by Sunday

The weather is getting nicer so I need to get out and hit the road!

Seems like sickness is going around. I'm not sure if I'm sick or worn out but the last two days have been brutal for me. Yesterday I spent the day curled up in bed feeling terrible. I had to teach spin last night at 8:30pm and couldn't find anyone to cover. There's this one guy in the class who always asks me what my power is at any given moment while were in the class. Last night he was so impressed with my suffer face that he thought I was working really hard so he asked what I was pushing out and my response was 180 watts. For me that is normally a recovery effort but last night it might as well have been a VO2 effort with how it felt. On top of that they're calling for 10-15cm of snow the night before my first road race on Friday. So now, if I am getting sick, I'm debating whether it's worth it to race in risky conditions if my fitness won't be anywhere near what I need to win or place well. And I have training camp in Nashville in less than two weeks so I don't want to wear myself to thin riding with sick legs. I need to impress in Nashville if I want a shot at some of the bigger UCI races this summer.

On the plus side my podcast is doing really well. It hit 26 on the Sports and Rec category on iTunes, beating out Phil Gaimon's new podcast. And the launch party was a big success. So I'm really stoked on that. If you're interested you can search Clipped In on iTunes and listen to the 3 episodes that are available. They've got really good feedback so far, which is awesome.

Also David, if you're having issues finding a training plan that is 2/1 let me know and I can help you out. I use the 2/1 cycle for my training.

Feel better soon Alan and Nicole!! Being sick sucks.

This morning I did my first ever brick that didn't suck. 45 minutes on the trainer (38F outside) followed by a 15 min brick run. Normally, I cramp like crazy during the first 10 or so minutes of a brick. Not this morning! Felt good the entire time AND I was able to keep my HR in Z2. Capped the morning off with yoga and strength training (up to 114/400).

Thanks for trying! I think I'm gonna go with Mike's idea of just adding rest weeks to change the plan from 20 to 28 weeks.

As for the season opener - as my trainer said to me once - a happy spouse = a happy triathlete. No worries about the season opener. If often sells out but with the date change - you never know. If you're there - the first round is on me. If you're not there - then I'll drink an extra beer in your honor!

Besides IMMT is TOTALLY WORTH IT!

Happy Tuesday BDAS!

I spent my morning working on my first three weeks of my IMMD plan. I'd love any one's suggestions... My goal is to get ready and drop a few pounds so I don't hurt myself any further. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ay2PYpZ6fqtcdBeIuri9UAFcfw1aCEKG...

Speaking of which - as you know, I have had an inflamed left bicep tendon for the past 5 MONTHS!!!! It's not getting any better. I've had two shots and as I've said, I've got the best PT in the business. So, my question to the group is - how do I swim the ironman swim leg using only one arm? I know it can be done but I just need to figure out how.

Today in the pool - it became clear to me that doing 25 yards with two arms wasn't an option. So I played around with four different techniques:

1)Elementary back stroke - which seemed to work best
2) Breast stroke using only my right arm
3) crawl holding my hurt left arm out like super man with my right arm doing all the work
4) crawl holding my hurt left arm at my hip while my right arm performed the stroke.

I wonder which is best - in terms of speed, fatigue, and punishment on my body. Thoughts? Anyone have any resources to share?

Thanks!
DQ

Stop swimming for a little while. You need to let it rest and heal.

Sadly - I't's not a "swimming" thing. I've swum 3x's in 5 months. It's a reoccurring inflammation in my bicep tension that just won't go away. GRR.

Question of the day: What is your favorite type of gu or energy gel?

Mine is Chocolate Outrage or Salted Caramel by Gu although if I could ever get my hands on Maple Bacon - I think that might go straight to the top

Went to the gym with my wife this morning - finished I'd get my 45 minutes of biking done. Legs are still tired from the race so I took it slow.

WHile I was getting my workout in my dock walks through the door. I love this guy - he's a triathlete as well and sixty seconds later he had agreed it was time for me to get an MRI. Not sure if I can afford it - but that's what Flex spending cards are for.

Hope everyone has a great day! Let's keep cheering each other on! To do that people need to post some workouts. Let's make it happen people!

Yes, sir!!!  :-)

Monday:  AM short bike/run session, evening 1800M swim and upper body ST
Tuesday:  90' trainer, 5 x 10' sweet spot, 5' RBI
Today:  lunch 3-4 mile run, evening 1500M swim and some core work

I stole my Monday swim routine from another thread in tri talk, main set was a 1km ladder as 25/50/75/100/150/200 and back down, all at slightly faster than race pace with rest intervals 5-15 seconds depending on the distance.  That hurt a little.  :-/

Happy Hump Day!!!

Started the morning with a 30min trainer ride followed by 30min of yoga (115 & 116/400). Later will be 2000yds of swimming after breakfast and a few errands.

Favorite flavor of gu? Really depends on the day. Cooler days I really like espresso, chocolate, or the salted Carmel. On hotter days, I'm all about the fruity flavors like orange.

Follow up question: What is your least favorite flavor of gu? Mine is vanilla bean, which is weird, because I'm wild about vanilla in most other forms. It is even my favorite flavor of ice cream, as boring as that sounds.

I can't do gels any more. They gross me out. Too many warm gels from jersey pocket during rides on hot days. I take candy with me now. Candy that won't melt. Or I take pieces of vanilla cake with me wrapped in foil.

I haven't done a quality workout since last Thursday. Been feeling tired and wiped since then. Not sure what's going on. I ate a 2lb bag of mussels yesterday thinking this feeling might be caused by low iron. Last night I started getting a terrible headache that last through the night and is still here this morning. I sometimes get migraines from extreme weather changes and I think what's happening counts. It went from sunny and warm to cold and snowy over night. I think I'm going to abandon the race on Friday. They're calling for freezing rain now. Not enough on the line to justify taking that risk.
