I goofed up my couch to 5k plan! I have the plan on the fridge and it seems that instead of checking what week I am on, I always just focus on the next INCREASE. So, I am on week 10 of the program, and I have completely SKIPPED two weeks of recovery training (by accident.) This made me wonder:

Could that be why my running seems so difficult? Theoretically, yesterday's run should have been easier than Wednesday's because I was inside on the treadmill (FLAT!) instead of outside (rather hilly.) But, the treadmill run was NOT easy; I had a really hard time, and that was my third time doing that level (21min run.) Also, my chest has been hurting when I run...right in the center. I never feel like I can breathe deep enough, so is this pain related to my lack of lung capacity...and won't this get better eventually? For the record, I feel really silly with my petty concerns with Darren and Helen running a million miles to my two-minute intervals; but I also feel really grateful because I know I can learn so much from you all (and I have you to pose my questions to!)

So, will "rest training" improve my performance (and comfort level?) Or (please be honest) is it possible that I will just never be a "runner?"

Consistency is what makes a difference in running. It took me over 2 years to like running. It is still difficult for me at times as I get sore. I think Darren shared a lot of good information.

Running hard and doing intervals hurts. If it doesn't hurt you aren't working hard enough. There is a difference between pain/hurt/discomfort of hard effort and a physical issue. If in doubt see your medical doctor to have it checked out.

Sometimes runs just don't have the run mojo going and they are harder than others. Why? Infinte possibilities...nutrition, stress, lack of sleep, ect.

When I first started running and tri training with a coach so about 15 months into training, I realized the workout I was most likely to miss each week was my run intervals. Why? They hurt and they were hard.  It took me probably 2-3 months to figure out I was skipping them a lot and why. My coach and I came up with a silly but useful idea to name my run intervals "my favorite" workout of the week.  BY making it silly and fun it took some pressure off and made me have a little fun with it. My family and everyone called it my favorite workout (even though it was really my least favorite). It just helped me change my attitude about it.

Missing two rest weeks, well best you can do is figure out where you are and adjust the training plan to get to your goal.

Kathy,

I love that approach to intervals.  I avoided them like the plague last year and know I need to change my attitude toward them to push the pace this season.

Darren, by "recovery training" I meant those were weeks with no increase...And, before now, I haven't measured my distance outside (just time); I didn't think I had a way to, but I realized today that my pedometer has a distance mode - hope that'll work! How can you describe your relationship with running as "mostly love" when you just did a 765-mile race???!!!Surprised

Kathy, TWO YEARS to like running??? I have been waiting for it to happen any day now!!!

Going by time is best, don't worry about the distance.

So that is probably why you have gotten a little pooped.  So just repeat the week you just did.  If you feel you are ready, go to the next week, if not, stay at this week.  There is no rush.  You need to take your time or you risk injury and frustration.  You have to trust the program, it does work., it just takes time.

Oh Helen- that is sooo frustrating for you.  We were talking about you over post race beers and wondering about how it went.  It is clear that next year you will just need to come to the states, stay with us BTers and run the Hyannis Half with us!  Is it a deal????

Okay, I posted that before I had seen all the details in the blog.  Holy Mother of God what a day from h3ll!!  Asthma being ugly is bad enough, the monster hill from h3ll, and a course that is f-kked up beyond belief!  No wonder you're pissed off.

All that being said, you still did a great job in horrendous circumstances.

BT had a great day in Hyannis.  There were more than a dozen of us together for pre-race pictures and post race beers and lunch.  I think that mostly everyone was happy with their races whether they were just using it as a training run, 1st time effort and whatever. I think everyone finished before it got really wet so that was good too.  It was really fun to meet people and everyone was as nice in person as they are on BT!

Haven't read your blog yet, but awesome.  That is a sweet picture.  Put a logo for Nike, or Zoot, or whatever on it, make a poster of it, that is a great picture.

Yeah! Way to go Lisa!  Helen is coming too! I'm going to keep saying this for the next year so it will be true.

I think a vest would come in handy, maybe that will be my next exercise clothing purchase along with some pants that aren't too big.... Sports Basement here we come!

My jacket is a biking jacket that the sleeves zip off. Extremely helpful and useful in the shoulder season of cycling or cold mornings. Plus it is totally windproof and water proof without a doubt the best cycling jacket I own and I have lots..maybe 12? I wear it over another jacket when riding outside in the 20s as keeping the wind off me is key to staying warm in cold weather.

Gore bike gear is fabulous and runs a little generous compared to most bike clothing.

Yeah, I was overheated really quickly (what perfect running weather! I overestimated with the jacket), but forgot my number belt and ended up pinning my number on over the zipper -- duh!  Made it really difficult to take off mid-race.  Vest would have been good to have (my only one is waterproof bike vest that is not very breathable-- no good for running).... but when I did take it off around mile 5, we had another girl in green!

It was so good to meet everyone and see some friendly faces during the run was VERY helpful!  Great job everybody!  Lisa - you beat me by 3 seconds!  WhyIoughtta... Laughing

Hope I'll be ready for the half next time!  I'll see how long I can actually keep up with Helen (you know, who will be on to a marathon by then!)
