Master 2638 | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread I'm leaning putting it all in there and rolling the dice that there isn't enough time for the race folks to go through each bag and pull out my extra tubes or bandaids or assorted poop-has-hit-the-fan medicines or chamois butter. I'll bet they don't want any potential fallout from throwing everything away post-race, so that is why they say food only. That said, at Beach 2 Battleship, I think we got both of Doug's SN bags back. We had to remember to go get them, but still. Set-Up Events = 1; WTC = 0. I'm keeping track. |

Elite 3683 Whispering Pines, North Carolina | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread I wonder how big those bags are going to be. Sounds like some of you were going to fill them up to the brim. Maybe put some items in a solid colored water bottle, in case they look. That is kind of a downer, though, but I bet they don't enforce it. |

Member 5 just outside of Philadelphia | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread I'm very impressed with the amount of training everyone is putting in and all of your July distances. July was a great training month for me capped (just shy of 700 miles on the bike) too off with a great last weeknd...Saturday was just a 75 mile bike ride but with 5600 ft of climbing and Sunday was my 20 mile run, which went great. And here I thought this website was Beginner Triathlete dot com. With some of the goals I'm seeing, you guys are going to be competing for a Kona spot. I'm going in with two goals (in addition to the main goal of just finishing)...my realitic goal is 1:30-6:00-4:20 and my "stretch" goal - if everything in the universe converged for me that day - is 1:15-5:30-4:00. Still training hard this week and then Saturday I'm leaving for an organized bike ride across the state of Pennsylvania...7 days, 450 miles, with about 5500 ft of climbing per day. Coming right out of that into taper. Keep up all the hard work everyone. |

I have a nice hard case for the bike already, but I would also have to check a bag with my aero helmet and I'm not so sure I want that tossed around. I guess I could just wear the aero helmet through the airport. |

I currently run tubeless DuraAce and have been very happy with the puncture resistance and feel. A friend has offered to loan me his Bontrager race wheels (52's I think) that run tubulars. I've never changed a tubular in my life and have no idea how they compare in durability/puncture resistance to a clincher or tubeless setup. With all the talk about tacks on the IM Louisville course, I like the idea of having my trusty tubeless setup, but I'm tempted to make the switch. My friend swears up and down that they make him faster. Everything I've read says it might make a difference a slight difference for someone averaging 18 to 19 mph, but even if you feel faster it might be worth it. Any thoughts? |

Expert 1146 Johns Creek, Georgia | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Thankfully I have not had to change one yet. though, you WANT TO MAKE SURE THE SPARE has been blown up and stretched over a rim before you attempt to put it on. And glued. If you hav the then put it on it should go over without to much effort.. In my life perception is 99% reality, so if I/ you think you are faster, then go for it and if it was tacks last year what would they do this year? Perhaps WTC will ride the course hours before and clean sweep any issues. As well, hopefully the good folks of louisvlle and LaGrange and Kentucky ingeneral will look out for folks. Come on folks, it's almost game time all ready!!! |

Elite 3658 Roswell, GA | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread My wife and I generally run tubular race wheels, but I'm considering leaving them at home for IM lou. It's those pesky tacks. Tubulars are great tires, but carrying spares is a pain in the arse and it looks like I won't get my SN bag back. I don't want to throw a contingency tubular in my bag and my wife's when the tires are about $90 a piece. We could bring a can of pitstop and one spare tubbie with us and hope for the best though. Tubbies have two main advantages IMHO. They are faster because they are lighter and generally have a lower rolling resistance. Sure you can get close with certain clincher tires and latex tubes for the rolling resistance, but it's hard to find the tires and tubes. The other advantage is you don't get pinch flats. As long as you don't hit glass or TACKS you will be fine. Changing a tubular tire is actually easier than a clincher, but I think you need to practice it before race day. Otherwise you might look like Norman Stadler on the side of the Queen K crying. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJWhNg-QiTc

Aren't you afraid that you'll overheat wearing a helmet without any/nearly as many vents in it as your standard helmet? I could certainly use the added speed savings.... What is everyone else wearing? Last year for IMWI I used an expensive pair of clinchers and its all I know. I have never thought of using tubulars due partially to $$ (as I've been reading they are much more than even some top-end clinchers) and the fact that I have no idea how to change one and might end up looking like normann stadler as pointed out... At least I have the "luxury" of driving down so I can bring whatever crap I want and stuff it in the trunk |

5 | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Hey All, I have coordinated group swims and rides for some 70-80 riders 5 Saturdays over the summer on the IMKY course. We have our LAST CHANCE swim/ride on SATURDAY, AUGUST 7TH. We meet at the Yellow Lot on River Road which is 1/8th mile from the Tumbleweeds Restaurant (IMKY swim start) which is located at 1201 River Road, Louisville, KY 40602. For those wishing to swim in/around/behind Towhead Island arrive by 7:45am for a short swim talk and then swim starting about 8:10am until 9am. Cost to do the swim is $5 so we can tip our kayaker(s) there for our safety. For those riding be at at the Yellow Lot by 9am to set up your bike, register and hear the pre-ride announcements at 9:15am. Our ride commences at 9:30am sharp. Ride cost is $10 to cover our SAG/aid (two vehicles on the course supporting the whole day with water, ice, Gatorade, bagels, bananas, energy bars, oranges, etc...) Ride options are 80 miles (one LaGrange loop) or the full 112 mile bike course. Riders sign a waiver and it is an open course with traffic along the route the entire way, just like on race day. Last ride we had 83 riders so everyone found someone/group/cluster who was riding at/about their speed. Speed averages from 20-22mph down to the low teens. If you are interested in joining to swim and/or bike just email me at [email protected] . We also have a big group of 400+ people doing the race over on www.iamtri.com where we post these rides and have alot of discussion/info sharing if you want to check that out. Also for these rides if you want to bring your SPECIAL NEEDS BAG to test this out before race day bring it along and we'll have it for you out on the course at about mile 67-68 on your second loop on the bike. If you have questions just email me. Hope you can join us. Bob |

Extreme Veteran 557 Woodland Hills, CA | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread I have a white lazer tardiz aero helmet. It has some nice ventilation and also a little hole on top to pour water in that then runs down though channels in the pad and distributes over your head. I've worn it on a long mid day ride and didn't have any issues. |

What is everyone else wearing? My regular helmet (even with water poured into/over it at regular intervals) feels horrible in the heat we are having in GA. I can't imagine how the decreased ventilation of an aero-helmet would feel. Ugh. My brain would fry. |

Extreme Veteran 510 Louisville KY | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread The bridge looks complete the approaches still need some work, paving, and guardrails. I go on dayshift next Friday I'll see if I can catch the inspector I talked to a couple of months ago. One question I have, will WTC change back to the original course so close to the race date. Going through Prospect is a major pain, and last year their was a pretty bad car vs. bike because a cop wasn't watching his side street. I hope they go back to the old course we'll see. For some numbers today it was 102 beat the record by a degree, one year ago today we had a pretty major flood that swamped U of L, Churchill Downs, just goes to show you how crazy Ohio Valley wheather changes. The river temp. is 86.8, the water quality has been great very low turbidities, and algae hasn't been a problem this summer witch is surprising. This can all change in a day, but so far so good! With it being that warm, I don't think there will be anyone complaining about wetsuits not being allowed. Maybe for training I'll go do laps in a hot tub in order to get acclimatized to the water temperature. |
