Pro 4528 Norwalk, Connecticut | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED DDVMM - 2012-01-25 8:01 AM Did anyone see the schwaggle deal of the day for 40% off the half Ironman in the Poconos for September of this year? My questions are is it a very difficult and hilly course? Also, WHY is it 40% off -can they not get people to sign up for some reason? Which brings up another question I have been meaning to ask the east coasters - what half Ironman or half Ironman distances would you recommend for a newbie? I do not think I am ready for a half Ironman distance this year (can i be?)although this deal is tempting and the race is not until September. I was thinking about putting a half Ironman distance on my schedule for next year. Thoughts?http://schwaggle.active.com/deal/5942/40-percent-off-ironman-703-pocono-mountains/~!f_indv_segment_key!~?cmp=24-4-68963-9Karen- I love the sufferfest videos too! I have a women's only one that I find really motivating! Upstate NY (Geneva) Mussleman is an awesome race, Patriot Half in Mass is a flat fast course that is great for newbies to that distance. I have a personal anti WTC feeling as they tend to target dates to directly compete and take over smaller local races that are very successful, so they could give me a free entry and i would still not do one of their races. I would look at race reports for the Pocono race, which i believe was new last year, i heard the course was hilly and hot, but September weather is hit and miss up here. You could also look at the Toughman course here in Westchester county, i believe it is also September, it is a rolling slightly hilly course run by a very good race director that gets a lot of great reviews. Good luck!!!! |

Her coach had her running in the 8:55 to 9:25 range but neither of us are any good at running slow and we ended up running in the 8:30s. Ooops. Kinda fun being everyone's go to for IM training company. |

In this vein the WTC just move the Galveston 5150 even to the weekend after a prominent local oly distance race in town. All the elites are still doing the local race from what I can tell. The local puts on a much better race anyway. |

I have a women's only one that I find really motivating! Poconos this year was a bit of a disaster. Swim was cancelled and the weather involved pouring rains and temperatures in the 50s. Historically late September in Poconos has sketchy weather (for the past two years the weather on race weekend has been cold and rainy). In addition the courses were not finalizend until right before the race. The bike course they ended up using is hilly, there were some reports on ST stating that it was unsafe (e.g. rain, blind corners, nasty descents and wet leaves). The race also didn't come naywhere near selling out, which would explain the Schwaggle deal. If you want to do a half, I think there's no question that you can be ready to complete the distance. If you're looking for a faster course later in the year, I would look at the Chesepakeman Skipjack in Maryland and FIRMman in Rhode Island, both of which are in September and neither of which sells out. |

I did get my 910 the other day so I am going to take it for a run. I am not the quickest when it comes to technology so it is crazy to see how much it does and its on my arm instead of on a desk. I did swim with it and wasnt real impressed as it screwed up my distance. The next thing is trying to figure out how to get the info to my training log. I am sure I will recruit the wife for that... I hope everyone has a good day. |

Got in a good hour long run last night and we have our first track session of the year for my tri club tonight. Our track coach doesn't officially start until Feb 15th so I'm "coaching" the workout tonight. Should be fun! Karen and Jen hope you feel better - I seem to be fighting off a cold right now too. It's no fun. Since I'm out west I can't help much with the HIM recommendations but I always seem to hear a lot of great things about Musselman. I went to college in the Finger Lakes so I'm partial to that area of NY. |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED Morning, all! I was up for an early run, and then I'll probably hit the pool tonight (if my sinuses aren't too congested). I'm really not good at motivating myself for these evening swims, so I'm really thinking that it's time to join the masters team. They meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:30-9. Fits the schedule, as my husband doesn't get home until 6-6:30. I'm going to email the coach today and see if it's a good fit for me.

I was trying to not pay to swim since I already have a gym membership with a pool. But, I really made improvements when I was swimming consistently. And masters made me be more consistent because I was paying for it! My sore throat is better today, but now I can feel whatever I have moving to my chest. Being sick sucks! I used to never get sick, but have been sick 3 times this past year. Not happy about that. I did get my run & bike in last night, so that was good. Today I have weights (do at lunch) and then an easy bike tonight. Should be able to do both no problem. |

It's fun, makes me accountable to my friends and give me someone to chase. Hit the weights and core afterwards. Will get some trainer time at lunch. On the sleep front we decided a few nights ago to pull the trundle out on Reagan's bed and throw Abby in there with her. Seems to be working. Fingers crossed. We're going to start trying for #3 sometime this summer I think so it's a good test run anyway since they'll end up sharing a room and Abby's room will become a nursery. Its a work out I do once every 4th week to see progression and progress. It also helps me mentally to focus on the little things rather then set times. Also in case you didn't know Ironman is a 4224 yards contineous swim.(JK) I LOVE THE BLACK LINE!! |

It would save my family a lot of money. We're selling our house and moving closer to the lake, so it will be a lot easier to get in open water swim on the weekends this summer. So you had a good experience with masters swim? I don't know why I've been hesitant to join. I guess I just feel like I'll be the slowest one there, and it will be humiliating (or I won't be able to keep up or something). I need to set my pride aside and do what will make me a better swimmer. Hope you feel better soon. |

Veteran 446 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED I have been running primarily on the treadmill for about 4 weeks. I ran outside yesterday and really noticed how sore and painful my hams were while and after the run. Does anyone else experience differences/issues when running on treadmill vs. outside? It makes sense that on the treadmill you do not propel yourself forward and possibly the hams are used differently. |
