Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() gobluedds - 2012-05-17 10:02 AM Sounds like you've nailed the most important issues. PACE yourself!! 26.2 is a LONG distance to run. Mile 20-26 feels longer than 1-20 so mentally prepare for that. Have fun with it. I have a bunch of friends that will be running that race. Most are trying to BQ. Did you know that it is almost 100% "downhill"? Pretty slight grade, but it's there. Hope the wind is at your back, it can get very windy on that course from what I've been told. Most of all HAVE FUN!! Oh, and welcome to the club! ![]() Thanks, there is a 5k here Saturday morning when you are up. I think my kds and I are going to run it. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ernesto- Do you think I should just skip the June race? I believe I will finish it, but that would be it. It is a big race and a big field from what I was told by some others that did it last year.. There is one here in the Springs in July and I will do that one. It is the only one here, seems odd for an Olympic City, but people only train here, they don't compete here. That being said, I would switch gears and my A race would then be in August. If I switch gears and focus there, would I be able to train for the Sprint Tri in August and a half marathon in September? I will also be starting the Masters Swim in June. |

![]() | ![]() JBacarella - 2012-05-17 9:54 AM Did you ever wake up in the morning and say "what did I do Last night?" Well I am having one of those days. Last night at 11:30 PM I signed up to do my first marathon, this Sunday! No, I was not planning it or considering it, I just saw there was a race that goes from Midland MI to Bay City Sunday morning checked with my wife, who responded with a puzzeled "if thats what you want to do." Then I signed up with 30 minutes before on-line cut off. Goal: Its my first one so I just want to finish. The marathon prognositcator's (thanks Chris) put me somewhere between 4 and 4:30 for a finish time. But its like I said its my first and I just want to finish, preferably in front of the walkers. It is a Qualifier for Boston, but I don't see me finishing in 3:25. Plan: I was thinking a run/walk plan basically running aid station to aid station, it looks like they are every two miles. Nutrition: light breakfast, Oatmeal with nutella and peanut butter, cliff bar 30 minutes prior, gell 15 minutes before then one every 45 minutes, drink at every aid station. Other: body glide for chafing and waterproof band aids (thanks Chris) for those special areas. Besides the obvious (What the heck am I thinking, I wasn't training for this), what do I need to know and what am I missing? and yes this morning I am crapping my pants over this. James, Before I comment, I need to ask some questions. 1) How many miles a week have you been running (say an average over the last 8 weeks). 2) What is the longest of those runs? 3) What is the longest race you've ever done? (running, not triathlon). 4) What are your PR's (if they aren't too old. Say in the last 4 years). 5k, 10k, 1/2 marathon. |

It was a nighttime trail run in 15F weather and 6 inches of snow and I wore Yaks Trax. I don't think it can be applied to anything. My fastest 5k is 21:16 my fastest 5 miles is 36.02. I am not sure of my fastest 10K although I did that one in March in 52:10. Last week I ran 6 miles in 49:09 and 10 miles in 1:26:23. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jim, Your Sunday marathon is doable but probably not a good idea. If you don't mind sacrificing the race fee just don't line up, you can finish but it will definetely be in survival mode and the last miles are going to hurt... a lot. The main reason is that it will be too ravaging on your body and it might lead to a long recovery, maybe even injury. The mileage needed to do a Mary cannot be bypassed. Ask Chris if you don't believe me... |

I am not sure of my fastest 10K although I did that one in March in 52:10. Last week I ran 6 miles in 49:09 and 10 miles in 1:26:23. Ok. Here's my advice: 1) Don't do it. It's stupid. I'm perfectly serious. You've never run more than 2:38 hours and 20 miles per week is the definition of "not training". Just chalk up the race fee to whatever you were drinking. 2) You will probably do it anyway. (I tend to do stupid things too). This article http://www.hillrunner.com/jim2/id64.htmltalks about predicting a marathon time from a 10k time based on miles run per week in training. 30-35 miles per week is the lowest he goes. (That should tell you something). His formula is take your 10k time and multiply by 5.5. For you, that corresponds to 4:47 (and again, that's the 30-35 miles per week number). I don't remember what marathon prognosticator I recommended, but those have multiples like 4.6 or 4.7 which is appropriate if you are running 70 to 80 miles a week in training. So if you really want to do this, then I would literally run 11 minute miles the entire time. If you go out and try to run 9 or 10 minute miles, you will have hell to pay. Not saying you won't finish. Anyone can finish, but crawling into the finish line isn't fun (to say the least) and does take a long time to recover from. If you have a heart rate monitor, keep your heart rate down to say MAF + 5 or 10 (at most) the entire time. As the race goes on your heart rate will increase. Slow down to whatever you have to to keep your heart rate down. 3) You will have a ton of fun for those miles until the wheels fall off. My marathon last fall, I kept my goal pace (8 minute miles) for 23 miles and slogged out the last three miles which weren't fun. So I missed my goal by 5 minutes and 59 seconds. Last Saturday, I had to take the last 8 weeks of training more or less off (but I did have a few 40 mile weeks in there) and the wheels fell off at mile 18. And that depreciation happened pretty quickly. I did the first 12 weeks of a serious 20 week training program where I was running 60 miles per week. But I had a great time the first 18 miles. The longer you put off having the wheels fall off, the more fun you will have. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jim, Listen to these guys about the pain and recovery time. Is doing this race worth possibly messing up the rest of your racing season? If you are anything like me, you will do the race now that you're signed up for it, that's why I posted what I did earlier trying not to discourage you. 26.2 doesn't mess around when it comes to ravaging an under trained body. Go into this with the mind set of finishing it not running it, certainly not racing it.

The cumulative effect of all this training has my knee (the one missing part of a meniscus) a bit off kilter. Need to ramp down some running here and move to more swimming. Will lay off running until Sunday. @Jim: FWIW, you are nuts to do a marathon unless you only care about finishing (which is not the case because you have a goal time in mind). Having only run 15 miles as your longest run to date, I can assure you that you do not have proper respect for the distance. I ran a handful of 20 milers and only had the proper respect for the distance after gutting out the 26.2. Alberto Salazar described a marathon as a 20 mile run and 6.2 mile race. Think about your longest run - bump that up by 33.33% and then tack on a 10-K for good measure. Sound like fun? Every mile in a marathon is not incremental - it is exponential. And as for the wheels falling off, been there at mile 22. Was on pace for my goal (after having trained hard) and I was brought to my knees twice with cramps in my hammies, which I never had before. The last 4 miles were pure suffering and not fun. Would love to see you do the distance, but only if you are safe and wise. - Mitch: S 4 / B 11 / R 12 / Rest Days 2 ; Total = 27 ; 18:21'57"

Monday was the pit stop issue, today thunderstorms. After mile 2 I increased pace and made it home just in time, less than 10 min before rain. On one hand, killed my HR. On the other hand, cool running at night and having your way illuminated by lightning...feels like one with nature. PS. No, I did not run amid lightning. Being FL, and flat as a pancake, you can see lightning at a distance. After mile 2 I felt it wa getting closer (by measuring lightning/thunder gap) and decided to scrap MAf and sped up. - Mitch: S 4 / B 11 / R 12 / Rest Days 2 ; Total = 27 ; 18:21'57" |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() @everybody: Tomorrow morning I will be heading to The Woodlands to see Gabe's big performance. We will meet hopefully at lunch before he drops his gear bags in T1 and T2, but after the swim practice at the lake. We spoke a bit before he went to the briefing, sounded a bit nervous but you can't blame him. I feel goosebumps and I'm not even racing... @Jennie: If you're signed up for the race already (June) why not do it? If you are not wait until the weather helps and you can have a few quality rides under your belt. @Andy: in November of 2009 I did a half in a downpour, I couldn't even believe they were starting the race and not canceling but they said they would only cancel if there was lightning. To make it short it was hellacious, mostly on the bike because the puddles make the bike slow, everything is heavy, like if you're climbing the whole race, the good news is that the run will not be hot. Save your legs for the run, go easier than usual on the bike. |
