CubeFarmGopher - 2012-05-07 8:06 AM

Kelly DNF'd her race yesterday.  She came out of the water completely pissed about people cutting the course and, while she was on the bike, had issues with breathing.  She said that, in order to hit her Z1 power/pace numbers, she was sitting in Z2/Z3 HR zones.

Stress (work, training, me) has completely pancaked her and she decided to pull out after the first loop of the bike.  Better to pack it in and save it for another day.

The issue with the race wasn't really the course cutting or the drafting or the breathing.  The issue with the race is that I'm emotionally spent and my training is/has suffered.  To make a long story short, about a year and half ago Shaun started showing signs of depression and I started to bug him to go see a therapist (he had previously seen a therapist when he lived in Florida, but stopped going after he moved to Connecticut).  Shaun resisted and things kept getting worse and worse.  He would be depressed for long periods of time, have panic attacks over simple things and be unable to focus on anything.  I spent a lot of time and mental energy just trying to manage Shaun.  This winter was particularly bad for him.

Finally, a few months ago Shaun agreed to make an appointment with the Institutes of Living and have a full assessemnt done.  He was diagnosed with severe depression, an anxiety disorder and ADHD.  He starts treatement this week, but unfortunately 18 months of dealing with him has left me completely burnt out.  I know that he is now working on getting better but its still really tough on a day-to-day basis.  Because of the emotional stress I'm having problems recovering well and staying healthy, which has adversely affected my training.  I'm incredibly frustrated.  At the moment Doug has pulled the plug on me and is not letting me train until I can deal with some of these stresses.  I'm just in a really tough position.

The DNF was just a symptom of the emotional stress.

I'm sure it was hard to share something this personal with us, and I appreciate your openness.  I hope Shaun is able to find some medication and/or counseling that will help him sort through his problems.  I know how important triathlon is to you, and I know you are frustrated.  Perhaps the time off will allow you to really put things into perspective.  Like Bryan said, we don't get paid to do this.  Our relationships, jobs, children, etc. are more important than this sport will ever be in the grand scheme of things.  Anyway, thank you for sharing.

karen26.2 - 2012-05-07 6:00 PM I agree with Carrie - more practice in OWS, in your wetsuit.  If the clinic is big enough you might get more of the "mass swim start chaos" vs. just swimming on your own.  But it sounds like it's not the people around you during the race, it's the feeling of the wetsuit and how constricting it is.

You're right.  It's not the people around me or sighting; it's the wetsuit.  I feel like it squeezes my chest, and as my heart rate climbs higher, the feeling gets more intense.  I don't even swim faster in it, so it's even more frustrating!  Thanks for the advice, ladies.

It's a sleeveless Xterra.  3 of my races will definitely be wetsuit illegal, so I'll only be wearing it for the oly in June and the HIM in Sept.

What wetsuit are you wearing?

Swimming question - what makes a person a good kicker?  I'm a horrible kicker, always have been.  I watch others doing kick drills and they look effortless in the water.  I'm kicking like there's no tomorrow but barely moving forward, and they are just cruising along.  I don't get it.  (Probably no different from just swimming in general - if I sprint I'm sure I look like a mess.  Some people just look so smooth in the water.)

If I tire out about halfway down the lane while sprint kicking, do I just need to keep adding kick sets to my workouts?  Are my hip flexors weak?  Will I always be a horrible kicker Embarassed and I should just accept that and move on?  Or is it possible to become an efficient kicker?

The amount of flexability in your ankles and the angle between your foot and shin greatly impact how much forward propulsion you have when you swim.  I was extremely frustrated when I first started swimming.  As a Cyclist first and a swimmer last I have stiff ankles with a natural flexion of 90degrees.  When I first started kicking drills I would come to a stop and then begin to move backwards.  I hated kicking drills.  The angle of the foot also caused problems in other area's of my swim.

One of my swim coaches spotted the problem and took me aside and showed my several exercises that made all the difference in the would.  If you watch the really gifted swimmers you will notice their toes point straight back and become like flippers.  Micheal Phelps has size 12 flippers and uses them effectively.

I cannot find the exact google page I wanted to show you, but this should help.  Look at how much flexion she has in her feet.  90 down causes drag when kicking, toes straight back means no drag.  As a triathlete kicking for propulsion is not very important, Getting your feet up and into streamline is free speed.

Just wanted to share the start of the MTB race a couple weeks ago. I have not edited the whole video yet, but will this week.  There were 49 riders in my group, all sprinting to this small singletrack entrance. I decided to hold back, as you'll see. I knew it would be choas. I almost ate this guys back tire.  I'll share the rest of the video tomorrow.  GoPro HD cameras are awesome!

bryancd - 2012-05-08 9:52 AM A little perspective. We are not professional triathletes. We are husbands and wives, professionals with careers, people with families that we love and support. Triathlon is a hobby, it does not define us. It's a recreation, never an obssession. If we begin to place too much of our self worth and value in our results, we are going down a very dangerous road. I appreciate your candor, Kelly, and from my perspective you have shown some tendencies of heading down that road. I think you need to get back to finding the simple joy in the journey of fitness and wellness as opposed to race results and expectations.

Well said..there's an article in this month Triathlete along the same lines.

Kelly - I do empathize --I know the rollercoaster of depression my whole life.  Find the simple joys not only of the sport but of life.

Things will get better!

Totally agree. Once you stop loving the process it's time to do something else for a while.

It's on June 10.  It's a new race - last year was the first year.  They offer HIM, olympic, and sprint races.  I hear the race is well run but the transition area is massive.  We all know I suck at transitions, so that should be interesting.  I'm in the very last wave of 15 or 16, which is a bummer as well.  It's got a flat, fast bike course and a hilly, slow run course....exactly the conditions I'll be facing at Cedar Point, which is why I chose this triathlon.  Plus, there's lots for the kids to do in Grand Rapids.

1:15 low cadence jazz on the trainer this morning.  I have to run after I drop the kids off at school.  I may bust out the jogger stroller this morning and take Freddy on the roads with me.  Talk about slow running

Tonight we're going to look at a house that has a lot of potential.  It's located in one of the top 5 school districts in Ohio (the real reason we're moving).  If we like it, we're putting in an offer.  It will be nice to know where I'm going this summer....

Pre registration for the Houston Marathon started yesterday.  Hope turnout is low.  I don't have a preferred registration status so I have to enter the lottery with the masses the first week in June.  I need to find a group to enter with that way if one of us gets picked we all get in.

Is it one of those sleeveless XTerras that go on sale for $99?

The problem with less expensive wetsuits is that the neoprene is much less flexible, which can feel very claustrophobic.  When you purchase an expensive wetsuit, you're essentially purchasing comfort, not speed.

I have a Blue Seventy sleeveless that I don't use much (Karen borrowed it last year) but its a WL and I think it will be too big for you.
