Hi everyone - just checking in after 10 day vacation in the Yukon and parts of Alaska.  The bike tour last weekend was great - the weather was horrible - I will get a Race Report up as soon as I get some time.

Leave tonight for Oklahoma for another 10 day  family visit.  Supposed to be in the 100's so I don't know how much training I will get in - was 70 here yesterday and I felt like I was going to melt.

I hope everyones training is going well!

AND GOOOOO CARLA!

Wow, we were almost at the bottom!  Sorry, busy at work!

I did get some relief at the doctors yesterday.  Slowly I can start running again and I can start PT next week.  He really made it clear how long a process this is going to be.  I am now accepting what most everyone else probably already knew and that is no IMFL this year.  He isn't convinced that I could be back in swim shape until May, which would count Los Cabos out.  But to get back running will be huge for me.  Looks like it will be marathon focus with some cycling thrown in!

If you get a chance, go read Carla's race report on her facebook page!  Very entertaining!

What's everyone up to?

Definitely funked right now.  I'm not sure if my vacation was not really enough rest after the 3 weeks of heavy volume, or what's going on.  Maybe the hiking did me in.  I don't know.

That said, I realized something last night.  My wife noticed how bummed out I am and also noticed I skipped the workouts last night.  She felt she did something that caused me to be bummed out and in a sour mood.  She knows I try hard to workout around her schedule so we have time to spend together.  Last night she came home from work early, and she thought I would feel guilty working out instead of spending time with her. So she thought her being home early pi$$ed me off.

There's a fine line between this being fun, or being work intruding into the rest of your life.  When I skipped the workout last night I knew it was not the best idea training wise.  But, taking it off was needed in respect to life and happiness.  When my moods and manorism change in a way that effects my family negatively it steps over the line of being fun.

I'm still not sure I'm going to do Racine now.  I know I'm not going to make the Vegas Championship, and this year has already ended for me.  Looking back, I spent a crap ton of time away from my family with little to show for it, but a broken down body.

Tonight will be a struggle.  I need to get the pool.  By far my biggest mental struggle with training is coming home after a long draining day at work and finding the stamina to drive to the gym and jump into a cold pool, sticking my head down in the water and grinding out an hour worth of strokes staring at the bottom of the pool.  BOOOOOOOOORING!

^.....WOW!! I sure sound like a whiny SOB right now!

Sorry you are having a rough time of it Brian, and of course a missed workout shouldn't matter in the long run.  If you are not having fun, maybe take a week off and see what happens.  Watch the Olympic trials on the tube and see if it moves you to the pool at night...Personally, the race/goal orientation is way more of a mental drain than anything else.  Can't stop thinking about s/b/r at all hours of the day or night.  If I spent the time I spend thinking about this stuff, training, who knows? I'd probably be a lot faster, or  totally burned out...

Also, I have no idea how you and others handle evening workouts regularly.

Anyway, good luck and make it fun!

Hey Ken, that sounds like mostly good news.  At least knowing that you can't jump back into the pool/tri's can help you stay focused on the running that you can do.

I'm having a pretty good week so far.  It's a light bike/run recovery week which is letting me spend a little time doing some strength stuff and Swimfest 2012.  I'm up to 6 days down out of 33 and already noticing some good differences at the pool.  It was supposed to be 30  days in a row of swimming, but I missed a day, so now it's 33 (1 step backward costs 3 forward...).  It looks like I'll be racing with my LBS going forward.  They are a good group and a good shop, so why not wear their kit and score a discount on some of the many upgrades I've got lined up for the bike...

Brian,

I know this isn't much but I know how your feel. Embarassed

Like my signature says "If it was easy everyone would do it." I'm struggling with my knee right now and I haven't said it yet to anyone but maybe I shouldn't have done the marathon. I'd rather be running 6 miles right now instead of struggling w/ 4.

My plans this year are shot also. I'm desperately trying "figure out" what I can do with the rest of the year. I might take July off from running and ease back into it in August and hope for the best. I had hoped to finish the tri season with a HIM but I might be lucky to just do the oly again or maybe just a sprint.

It will be interesting for me next week, I'm racing on Sunday. I suffer from taper madness and lots of nerves before a race. So either those 2 will be heightened or maybe just maybe I won't give crap and I'll just have fun!

Oh and I'm hoping for fun! Cool

Thanks guys!

This is really getting to me because I'm usually not like this before a race.  I'm more likely to be over optimistic and then get dissapointed by the result.  I've never been like this where I REALLY don't want to race!

I pulled out some stops this afternoon and bought some toys!  I picked up some Vittoria open corsa CX tires, latex tubes and valve extenders, and a Rudy Project Wingspan aero helmet.  I'm hoping that gives me some extra motivation!

Buying new gear works for me!

If you decide to race just try to have fun with it. I know it's gonna be hard to do. I'm feeling the same way right now so I guess this is good advice for myself as well. Embarassed

New toys usually work for me too!   I got some new Zoot Ultra TT's the other night, the other stuff is on it's way.  I'm hoping to at least get the tires and tubes by this weekend to get a ride in on them.  Probably won't get the cone head helmet until next week though.

I did end up getting a sinus infection, which could explain a little of my funk.  I lost my nose clip before last weeks swim workout and got some water up my nose on some flip turns.  DOES IT EVERY FRIGN' TIME!!!

Hey Brian,

I felt the same way for the past few days. I felt like I was in some weird funk.  Took time off on Monday, and then it happened again yesterday. I woke up, and pretty much slept all day...on and off, never felt right, and decided to just bag my long run. Got a little mad at myself, but I think I needed a little break, I think I know the reason, which I will state below.

Honestly - if you feel comfortable finishing the HIM, then do it. Just get out there and have FUN and roll with it. Enjoy your new toys! Sometimes I find if I take off for one or two days and basically do nothing, will do wonders physically and mentally.

I think the reason why I'm in a funk is low iron. I'm going to get my blood test done soon and get the iron levels checked. I had a bit of a bad nose bleed out of nowhere Tuesday. I had the same issue a couple weeks ago. I haven't had bad nosebleeds since I was a kid..then had to have my nose cauterized due to weak wall. Looks like it started up again. ARGH!!
