Since we are talking about equipment I wanted to ask about sunglasses. I'm thinking about trying out some new ones.

Do you wear them when running and/or cycling?

Do you wear sunglasses during races?

If so what brand or brands and model if you know do you like or use?

I wear a pair of relatively inexpensive Tifosi brand when I bike. I don't wear them on the bike during races as my aerohelmet has a visor. I sometimes wear them when I run but not if I am running alone and wearing earbuds. I have worn sunglasses during the run at triathlons but most of the time I just wear a visor without sunglasses. For just hanging out or driving I have a pair of Costa del Mar sunglasse that I like.

I have a pair of Oakleys that I use mostly for training runs or biking. Otherwise, races are usually done in the early morning and I'm good with just my visor or hat. I have to at least have a hat though.

Got a 1500m swim and 5 mile run in yesterday. Bike at lunch and maybe a run tonight, depending on how late we get back from a being out tonight.

Thanks for the shoe testimonials. I tried on a pair of Saucony Triumph 10s yesterday and really liked them. The guy at the store said that they offer pretty similar cushioning as my Asics, but they felt much lighter, which I liked. I might give them a go once I've worn my current pair down.

I swear, it rains everyday now! Hopefully, it will be clear enough that I don't have to go to the treadmill tonight. I had to twice last week, which is 2x more than I wanted.

Jamie-we finally have sunny skies here on the Gulf Coast. Hopefully, the nice weather is headed your way.

I like sunglasses almost as much as I like running shoes. I have plenty so I wait until I find a pair that I really like on sale. My favorites are a pair of Oakleys that I got at a 50% off sale. I also have a pair of Rudy Projects that I won at a raffle after a triathlon last year that I really like. They have three different lenses so they get used a lot when it is lower light conditions. I actually have several other pairs but I am afraid that I am starting to sound like someone from "Hoarders." One thing I would recommend, I have a pair of clear, Smith and Wesson shooting glasses that cost $7 that I wear on truly overcast days. They are nice to have around if the conditions dictate.

I wear glasses about 95% of the time when riding or running. I just like having my eyes protected from rocks and other projectiles.

I wear sunglasses when running or riding outdoors without exception.  They are perscription so unfortunatly not cheap.  I have a few but the pair I wear 98% of the time are Kaenon.  Because of the wrap only a few will do a special grind on the lenses so there is no distortion all the way around with progressive lenses.  Both Oakley and Kaenon will do that but Oakley outsources that part and Kaenon is the lense manufacturer so they do the work themselves.  Great workmanship.  I have recommended them to many people and all rave about them.

Well I finally finished what should have been done days ago. The high winds and busy work schedule keep me in too many days.  But I passed my 400 mile goal on the bike!  Tongue out YEAH! 407.11 miles to be exact.  So I am working on what's next.  I will post my March goal on Friday.

Stuart-congrats on beating your goal with a couple of days to spare.

Was able to get a good bike workout in and still make my daughter's soccer game. Good day.

Did a long and quick fast paced swim this morning. I'm leading my lane for about the first half or so of practice and then I sort of gas and hand that responsibility over to someone else. Hopefully I can keep up that effort for a full practice at some point!

1 hr run after work today. Would rather get it in at lunch and stay later for work, but we have training this week and not much leeway to extend the lunch hour.

I wear a pair of dark Optic Nerve glasses when i ride but usually just a hat with a visor when I run. Eventually I'd like to get a pair of prescription sunglasses, I just haven't found a pair I'd like to wear. I'll have to look at the brands mentioned above. Got in a 1200 yd swim and a hard 30 min trainer ride today all after rock climbing. It feels good to be back to normal.

Rode my bike over to the PT to do my run today.  Last Friday I did my first 2.75 miles in 30:33.  Did it today in 28:33.  It is starting to feel good.  I will jump to 3 miles on Friday.

I also did 30 minutes of upper body work plus the 11 miles on the bike round trip so a decent day.

Stuart-

Awesome. You have hit your bike mileage goal with room to spare and now you are making some serious improvements in the run. I see great things for you in your next race.

It is 34 degrees here and last night we got six inches of snow. You can only imagine what s mess that was for tonight's run. The funny thing is that I found myself looking forward to it. 34 is pretty warm compared to what I have been running in. I decided that I was going to embrace the slush. It was a little cold for the first mile but I just ran through the puddles and snow/slush piles and pretended like I was a kid. It was fun and the miles flew by. When I was done I was soaked but felt great.

Sometimes it is nice to remind myself how fun it is to be able to do this stuff and how lucky I am.

Good list of do's and don'ts for triathlon swimmers by Gerry Rodrigues. A while back I had posted his video series. This breaks it all down into a straight forward list. I've tried to incorporate many of his suggestions into my swim workouts over the last few months and it has helped.

Just got back from the elementary district track meet. Our kids did really well. I"m hoarse from running around the inside of track and encouraging my students. My aide told me I'd better not let my coach know that I ran 2X the 200, 800, and 4X100.

Well I didn't quite make my February goal of 300 y swim without stopping but I did make progress anyway. Yesterday I did 2x100 with 30seconds rest between, then 2x150 with 60 seconds rest between them. I couldn't do that a couple of weeks ago. I do believe I will be swimming the 300 within the next few weeks without stopping. The swim instruction has really helped.
I am up to 1.1 miles jogging out of 3 miles, working up 2/10 per week. I got impatient with 1/10th per week.
I am still really enjoying this. Seems like the training is making me naturally want to eat healthier, I have dropped some weight.
I bought a pair of Asics last week from an actual running store! . I am not sure I have ever been in one before!

Great to see everyone feeling better, hitting goals, and increasing miles! Always an awesome feeling to move forward.

Got in a 10 mile slog tonight, and tomorrow a friend and I are going to do some time on the Xterra course. So excited! I'm aiming to be more confident going downhill and not using the breaks so much. I think if I keep repeating the hard stuff, it'll take the fear away.

This Sunday is the 1st ride of "Red Dirt Series" which are three off road races that are most held on parts of the Xterra course. Excited about getting that in too.

Happy training!

Oh! My February totals:

Bike:6h 36m 02s  - 88.5 Mi
Run:11h 52m 19s  - 66.5 Mi
Swim:4h 36m 25s  - 9569.12 Yd
Mountain Bike:1h 30m

A lot more time on the bike, a tad more on the swim, a little less on the run. All the races on my long run days cut into my miles.

Short month of February. I would have been on track to beat my bike mileage from January but due to the short month didn't quite make it. I improved the run mileage which is nice because it seems that my knee is ready to pound again ... slowly of course ...

Bike:19h 01m 37s  - 312.68 Mi
Run:8h 10m 15s  - 43.3 Mi
Swim:6h 36m 12s  - 17876.52 M

So yesterday morning I woke up and had a runny nose which I thought was from the high pollen count but it looks like it developed into a full blown head cold. Wow 60 minutes on the bike last night ... sucked! Hope everybody is doing well....

I finished my workouts for the month.  I did my last 2.75 mi run before I jump up to 3 mi.  It felt much harder than yesterday but was actually 15 seconds faster.  I rode over and back to my PT but took a small side detour on the way back just to get my bike numbers to a nice round number.  Cut it a bit close but here are my Feb numbers:

  • Swim:                  4750 yards           1:06:32               (just two workouts)
  • Bike:                   430.04 miles       25:13:22               Beat my 400 mile goal!
  • Run:                     20.50 miles         3:49:10
  • Walk Dogs:           51.52 miles
  • Core/upper body:                            3:00:00

Thanks for all the help and encouragement.  It made for a great month.  Debating on a few options for a goal for March.  I will post tomorrow.

I'm a trainwreck.......seriously between work, MY PT, DH's PT, my Dog's laser treatment and all our DR appts I don't know if I'm coming or going anymore.  But I forge on......

I just sat on the spin bike for 30 minutes today- it was all I could muster.  I'd like to swim tomorrow but I also need to run a bit.  We'll see how early I can get up tomorrow.

Mary - awesome job - you are really inspiring

The rest of you slackers (of course I kid) are doing pretty good too!

Thank GOODNESS tomorrow is Friday!

Carry on - 1 more hour at the office for me......

Good job on the Feb. numbers folks!

My Feb. is done as well

Bike:21h 08m 58s  - 452.04 Mi
Run:11h 23m 13s  - 78.37 Mi
Swim:12h 27m  - 38200 Yd

Pleased with my work on the bike. Run is steadily coming back. Swim just depends on the day but I'm pleased to have made progress with the swim over the last couple of months. One month until first race of 2013!

February's totals:

Bike: 13h 30m - 309.24 Mi
Run: 14h 20m 32s - 111.65 Mi
Swim: 12h 32m 30s - 39950 Yd
Strength: 20m

Wait, where are those stretching minutes I vowed to log? Must do better in March

After a little health scare this week with my wife (she was admitted to the hospital briefly for abdominal pain to rule out bad things) I am a little bit more back to normal, at least for the next 48 hours. Then my wife and son leave for Florida for a week and I am a single parent with my 10 year old daughter. It should be interesting trying to make it all work. The time that my wife was in the hospital sure showed me how reliant I am on her for so many things. Very, very educational......

I'm really happy with this month. I haven't missed a scheduled workout in 2013, and I feel like I'm right on pace with my training plan. I'm getting ready to wrap up the first phase of my plan, and things start to ramp up over the next couple weeks, so I'm glad I'm getting comfortable with the time/distances. Everyone's numbers are looking good!

I'm disappointed in my numbers this month but it's largely due to being sick so I'll give myself some slack: Bike 8hrs 49 min - 134 miles. Run 7hrs 45 min - 51 miles. Swim 5 hrs 50 min - 11200 miles. I leave tomorrow for Snow Mass for a skiing/boarding trip with my boys. I'm really going to try to get some running and biking in while I'm gone at the hotel gym. We'll see how it goes but it's very special to spend that kind of time with my boys.
