Actually, it is storming here too, so the only sweaty option available to me (and probably the only one I should, and maybe not, take) is rolling it with something hard between my legs.

Like, you know, a trainer ride.

Mother's Day swim video

I'm not seeing much improvement here. A little frustrated.

Okay. Maybe there is some improvement.

Swim video from a year ago.

Skrat and Yanti would be better off commenting on this, and I don't really know anything.....but....the things that stood out for me when I watched are......1. Over rotation of the head when breathing. I try to look to the side of the pool, whereas, you are looking more toward the ceiling. This can lead to mis-timing of breath, losing your break wave, and scissor kicking in order for your body to regain balance. 2. Hand entry. It's difficult to see on the video, but it looks like the fingers are above the wrist. If they are, essentialt you're pushing the water and putting on the brakes with every stroke. This goes on into affecting the catch and pull position, which seem flat to me. As MadMath said, you need high elbow and wrist during the underwater phase of the stroke. Think back to Yantis avatar showing her catch position with a nice curvy "reach over the barrel" arm position, with elbow above wrist, and wrist above fingers. As said earlier,I don't really know much, I'm slow in the water and have only started swimming last year, but I think I know what I'm supposed to do in the water, whether or not I put it into practice is another matter.

There is definite improvement. You are much smoother and more streamlined in the water.

I think Madpolymath and Daz have it right. There are a few things to work on, but where I see the change that could make the most difference now is in the catch and pull. Currently, you're leading with your elbow, which means that for much of the pull you are actually jabbing your elbow back in the water (your forearm is fairly horizontal or flat) instead of anchoring your forearm vertically in the water and using it to pull yourself forward.

This thought-analogy may help. As you reach forward to begin your stroke, point your elbow UP toward the ceiling (you'll have to turn your body in order to do so). This should also have the effect of making your wrist drop under your elbow and fingers point down to the bottom of the pool. Then pull yourself forward as if over a cliff face--your upper arm is on top of the cliff face, your forearm is vertical on the cliff face, with the elbow forming the 90-degree angle between them.

If your pool has such edges (it looks so), you can practice by lying on your stomach facing the pool, reaching your arm out, folding it over the pool edge, and pulling yourself forward by using your forearm on the pool wall.

StaceyK - 2013-05-13 6:41 PM All your talk of beautiful weather is making me feel even colder (I want summer back already)!!! Our night time temps are down in the 40s now, which is cold for us (we don't get snow) And it is still dark at 6:30am and the sun is going down at 5:30pm. 3 weeks ago we were still getting 100* days so I am not coping well. I have lost all of my motivation and just want to go back to bed after DH leaves for work at 5:45.

DH wont let me train outside in the dark because there are no street lights and sidewalks and very limited road shoulders where we live. i can train inside on the trainer and the treadmill but this is not exciting me and even then I am still cold after 30minutes.

Can any of you give me some good suggestions for winter gear? I have my first race in a week and a half and it will most likely be around 50* at the start, this is definitely not shorts and t-shirt weather for me. More like 2 layers of pants, 3 tops and my ugg boots (you might need to google that one) but I can't run in that

Stacey, this is from the trail run I did in December. It was 33* out:

Album

I was a bit on the chilly side at the start, but once we got going, I was good.  Cheap gloves and ear warmers, because the hands and ears are the 2 places I feel it most. Sometimes I'll do a wool cap, but it has to be real cold for that. I went with a long sleeve tech shirt over a short sleeve tech shirt. Short tights. I have to agree with Ben, you really need to look at the distance and your own body. I have often been too warm and rarely been too cold throughout a race, which to me means I generally overdress. So, I've been working on it and it was A-OK at this race. Keep playing with it until you find what works for you. Good Luck!!!!

I'm just curious, are any of you guys urban riders?

Due to time constraints (and because Yanti is trying to seriously kill me with this plan) I do all of my rides in the city.

I swear, every day I could do a full race report on the crazy stuff that happens.

I ride home a few evenings a week, the first 6.5 miles are along a highway with a "bike lane". Maybe 3 foot of crappy pavement and debris, it was the shoulder until the state mandated bike lanes.  TW hates that I do it, but it is really the best option timewise to get in training.  I do NOT go aero along that piece of the route.  There is much relief on my part when I hit the turnoff into the neighborhoods, and can put in some real pushing, training, intervals etc.  I couldn't imagine trying to do any of that in the city.

I'm not trying to seriously kill you. I'm trying to ridiculously kill you.

My primary mode of transport for 3 years in LA, of all places, was a bicycle.

I'd suggest wearing a full-fluoro jacket / lots of reflective shyte / flashing lights even in daytime.

I met someone at the gym this morning who could turn out to be very helpful for my run......the president of the local (tri cities) road runners club--Petersburg area, told me about their group runs.  I may hit their Saturday run at 8 AM this weekend over at the battlefield.  A very hilly and technical run/ ride route!  It will benefit me a great deal since the Richmond marathon is hilly for the second half.

reneehoyos - 2013-05-14 1:10 AM Manees! How are you all accessing folks workouts and race logs? I'm loving the inspires and would like to do some for y'all. Lemme know.Oh. Odd thing in the pool today. I could smell the guy in the next lane's cologne. Underwater. Ever had that happen? Every time he'd pass me, I'd get a whiff underwater. That is the first time I have ever smelled someone in the pool. I felt like a marine mammal!

You truly must be a manatee.

Renee is a SURFER! She's like a pre-qualified Manatee!

I live in Surferville in Bali. However, if I surfed, that's ALL I'd do, and I already seem to be overly obsessed occupied with other slightly dangerous, somewhat water-based pursuits.

How's yer face?

Well ... I don't know why, every time I see a medical professional, they look at me as if they don't know how I've managed to stay alive in this world which is rummaging around the borders of my mental capacity.

Somehow the broken toothpick end had actually fish-hooked itself in, so that any attempt to retrieve it (i.e., my hour of increasingly questionable methods self-stabbing) buried it deeper. The dentist had to cut it out. Even I was shocked at its shape and size. I'd spent the night with a small fishhook jammed deep into the gums between two teeth and poking at a nerve root.

So I got sent home with antibiotics, painkillers (a true rarity in Indonesia), and strict instructions to not exert myself for a few days (so the gums can heal together properly and rebuild the blood vessels blah blah blah) and eat soft foods only on one side.

It's not really hurting but I am insanely tired. I guess I was insanely tired all last week, too, even before this happened. It occurred to me I've been double full steam with a double cream head since before IMNZ on Mar 2, so maybe I should just rest. I think the German side of me is what feels insanely guilty if I don't do much for a day or two.

So I had a piece of red velvet cake (very soft!), half a mango and coffee for breakfast today and am back in bed, albeit doing stuff via computer and phone. But I'm resting!

Pop tarts are soft if you warm them up. I am glad the bulk of the ordeal is over. Rest up. Watch movies. Keep us entertained. I missed you.
