It was good to visit my son, and catch up on the goings on in that office too (I worked there for a year or so). But, it was good to get home last night. Not sure who is racing this weekend! I thought I saw something on Rita's and Jaime's planned races? |

Veteran 458 Greensburg, PA | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed So, does anyone else have weeks where you are just tired all the time? I do not have a heavy training week, but I have been so tired. At the beginning of the week I blamed it on being on vacation and a long day in the car getting home. I don't really think I can blame it on that any more. I sometimes have weeks where I do feel more tired, but this is ridiculous! I fell asleep at my desk this morning, I fell asleep at a continuing education class yesterday afternoon, and I fell asleep in my car after work on Wednesday while I was waiting on a friend for a bike ride!! That is a bit much! I have been getting my usual sleep, so that is not the issue! I just wanted to rant a little, because I am getting tired of being tired! I hope everyone is having a good training week! Karen |

If I'm not lucky I end up over sleeping in the morning. I know it's sleep related for me and with 3 small kids it's just not possible to get enough rest and enough training in all the time. I always do well in my races but then again I'm not competing for a podium spot so the reality is I never "get it all in" maybe some day I will. |

Veteran 253 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Karen--I definitely know what you mean! Isn't exercise supposed to make you have more energy?!? I've been doing ok, but this last week...man, it doesn't matter how early I go to bed, (8:30 2x this week!-normally it's 10:30), I'm still DRAGGING! I figure with the volume still increasing that it's going to get worse before it gets better. I picked up some melatonin today, because even though I'm exhausted, I'm having trouble falling asleep & staying asleep. Todd--Congrats on reaching your fundraising goal for a great cause, & your new "do" can only make you faster! Ken--I can believe it's almost here! How are you feeling? I've got a question? What sort of taper (how long) is everyone doing for their IM? I've read some conficting things & ranges from 1-4 weeks. My plan has a 3 week taper, but I'm looking at more of a 2 week taper, as I think I'd benefit mentally & physically from another big run & bike (but slightly shorter than my longest). |

I hope everyone is having a good training week! Karen Fortunately I have always been an early riser, although during IM training I definitely have to get an even earlier start than normal. I try not to go to bed much after 9, and even earlier if I can get away with it. Usually by Thursday it gets a little tougher to get up, but I just tell myself I can back off for November and December and I struggle through it. I also thinks it helps a little bit splitting the long run and long bike up. For the last one I did them back to back on the weekend and by Sunday afternoon I could hardly stay awake. Fortunately I was living in an apartment in CA and would just be sitting by the pool, so a nap was not an issue! Make sure you get your rest day in and don't use it to make up missed workouts! |

New user 160 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed This week I have been extra tired, as well! It seems to be every other week for me now, instead of every three weeks as it was early on in training. I have cut out workouts more often than I should, I think, because I'm "tired." I struggle to find the fine line between needing to rest (your body will let you know when this is the case) vs. wanting the rest because I love to sleep! This week, for instance, I regret taking an extra rest day. I don't think my body needed it, but my mind won that battle and I slacked off. Ken, your post about your IM in two weeks made me chuckle...I am so focused on my race that is 3 weeks away that I am in constant count down mode! As for taper, I've struggled a bit with it because I am about to start mine. I have followed what I feel to be a fantastic training plan (Fink's BeIronFit competitive 30 week plan), so I have to continue to trust it, but I'm nervous because it's a 3 week taper. I have a 112 mile bike / 1 hour run (brick) tomorrow, which is my longest bike so far. Then Sunday I have my longest run of 20 miles, and a recovery ride of 75-90 minutes. Then the taper begins--however, next weekend is still a 4 hour ride/30 minute run, and a 14 mile run Sunday. So that's still high mileage two weeks out, I think. I know of others who do 10 days to 2 weeks, but like I said, I'm going to trust my plan, as it got me this far and I feel prepared. I am ready for this high volume weekend to begin! I think I'll start tonight with some fuel from a Belgian beer bar and a high-end Mexican restaurant. It's worked before, so why not? Happy training all! |

My plan has a 3 week taper, but I'm looking at more of a 2 week taper, as I think I'd benefit mentally & physically from another big run & bike (but slightly shorter than my longest). I am feeling cautiously optimistic. But, since this isn't my goal race, I feel a tad bit undertrained. The focus up until a couple of weeks ago was HIM's, and the longest bike I have been on was a 3.5 mile ride several weeks ago. Going to do about 80 miles this weekend. Now, running shouldn't be too bad, I did 16 this week, and will do 17 next. Swimming on the other hand will be great if it is wetsuit legal. I read an excellent article on tapering in Triathlon 220 (a British Triathlon magazine that I can get at Barnes and Noble when I get a chance to stop in there). The article basically suggested a 2 week taper, that dropped volume 40% the first week and another 20% the second. The key though, was that the remaining volume had some race pace intensity (maybe even a bit quicker) added in. I didn't save the magazine, and I can't find it on their website. But I think I have summed it up pretty well. Another method I have seen used is to taper the different sports at different rates. You may, for instance, want to taper the run for 3 weeks, but 1 week works for the swim. |

It seems I have been racing HIM's every other week for the past couple of months, so it was bit easier to lose track. Plus it isn't my focus race so I haven't had the long bikes to look forward to on the weekends. That is one thing about IM plans, even the taper rides are longer than most shorter distance peak rides! Have a great weekend of training! Sounds like a good carb load plan! |

Master 1539 Sin City | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Original by hoale1985 Looks like everyone is in full gear prepping for those late summer tri's! And congrats to those of you that have already completed! Since its summer, (it's more like my winter) in Arizona I have reduced my training to only when I want to and it fits my schedule which has had its ups and downs. It was really easy to stop after my Leadman race this spring because I beat myself up so much! Now getting back into things and looking for some advice and help in nutrition. I feel it's very apparent I have no concept or plan to this key component because both tris this spring I fall a part on the run. So, what you're take for nutrition? I don't get GI issues but I was puking on the run. I typically do GU gels and mix a sports drink with water however I don't think I'm taking in the calories necessary. Either miss on or feel good so I end up putting it off longer than scheduled. I used to take Hammer gels. They work for me better than GU. HHowever now I have been eating Nature's Bakery Fig Bars. They are reallllly good and real food. There's 2 squares per package. The only issue I see with this is its a bit big on size. Similar to Cliff Bar size. I take these for my rides and Heed or Skratch for drinks and Endurolytes on high temp days. No GI issues. Nutrition is so personal. For the runs, you probably is taking in too much and going too hard. Try ceasing any gels about 30 mins before starting the run. I don't take any nutrition for 2 hr bike rides, just electrolytes. Same goes for sprints. Longer distances, I'm sure others can chime in. You can also try Feed Zone books, heard great reviews! |

Turned out that I have low iron. Popped in iron pills now I feel better! I still have insomnia but better. Point is, try to figure out if its hormonal, thyroid or low iron. |

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed The IM distance race I am doing in 2 weeks is a four loop bike course. We rode 2 loops of it this morning. There was a pretty good breeze from the north which was about a 15 - 20 mph head wind on the section of the course that had all the climbing, it would have been nice to have the tail wind there. But on the other hand, the wind out of the north is what is keeping the temperatures nice and cool. |

Member 258 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Awesome haircut, awesome cause. I can't believe all your IM races are so close, either!!! Where did the summer go? Do you all go crazy during the taper like I do for shorter races? I did a sprint race yesterday. I have a lot of love for this race because it was my first tri ever. I did it on a $50 Huffy mountain bike back in 2003. I remember my time was 1:45, and after it was over I decided to check out the results to see how hard I would have to work if I ever wanted to place. Then I thought, well that will never happen! So I looked to see how long I would have to maintain the same speed to place. Only until age 65! Last year and this year I did it in 1:14 and won my age group (not yet 65, by the way). So much fun to look back at where I was then, and makes me feel like anything is possible. Jaime |

You should be really proud of yourself, what a great feeling to see that kind of progress and know that you're capable of so much more than you thought you were! Maggie, congrats on your last long training--2 weeks, right? No ideas on the number, and I'm in the same boat. #477 and it means nothing. So I'm calling it my new lucky number! My biggest volume training weekend went well, though I did not get my recovery ride in today. Yesterday was my longest bike ever at 115 miles in the "hills" of Florida--rollers and short, steep climbs. Took me longer than I would have liked, but I felt okay. Pretty solid 7 mile run off the bike--I think anything would have felt good, though, I was so happy to be off that bike! 20 mile run today went really well, though the first 3 miles were really rough since I was tired from yesterday. 3 more weeks! So once you get to 674, you'll know you at least 2/3 done (hopefully more). Jamie-Congrats on winning your age group at your race!! It's always fun to see improvements. Becky-Great job on your long ride! I know what you mean about bring glad to get off the bike & happy to run! Ken-Hope you were able to go faster than your last long bike of 3.5miles in 3.5hrs with that headwind. I tried out my new Cobb seat on my long bike this weekend. What a mistake!! I must have stopped about 8x to try & adjust it so it was so uncomfortable, but was unsuccessful. I made it 106 miles, but most were not pleasant. On the plus side, my back & neck felt better. . I had a 3900 meter swim this am. I really like having that long swim the day after, it really works out the muscles, & I feel great after! |
